Fiji Declares State of Emergency after Cyclone

Authorities in Fiji have declared a state of emergency and ordered troops to launch relief operations in the northern region battered by a powerful cyclone that forced thousands of people to flee into shelters. The scope of destruction was not clear because communications were cut to the outer islands and to northern areas of Vanua Levu, officials said. One death was reported as Fiji's National Disaster Council declared a 30-day state of emergency. Matt Boterhoven, Fiji's Tropical Cyclone Centre's senior forecaster, said “Cyclone Tomas” was still a Category 4 storm, but weakened to Category 3 while moving into the open sea south of the island.

Thai Protesters Spill Blood on Govt Building

Thousands of Thai protesters volunteered and poured several jugs of their blood at the front gate of Government House. "The blood of the common people is mixing together to fight for democracy and the Prime Minister will be reminded that he is sitting on people’s blood," Nattawut Saikua, one of the protest leaders, said. The blood smearing is the latest move by the anti-government United Front for Democracy Against Dictatorship (UDD) to force Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva to dissolve parliament and call new elections. But Abhisit has repeatedly said he will listen to the protesters but will not accede to their demands. The protesters are supporters of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who was ousted in a bloodless military coup in 2006. Thaksin fled the country in 2008 while facing trial on corruption charges that he says were politically motivated.
