China Suspends Death Sentences for Two Years

China has introduced new standards to reduce the number of criminals it executed yearly. The country’s Supreme People’s Court told lower courts to suspend death sentences for two years. But this instruction applies only in cases where there is no need for “immediate execution”. China has introduced a number of measures over recent years to cut down the number of executions. Those benefiting from the changes will probably never be executed. Criminals given a suspended death penalty usually have their sentences commuted to life imprisonment. Meanwhile, 3 explosions struck government buildings in China’s Jiangxi province on Thursday, killing two people and injuring six others. Officials said the cause of the blasts was being investigated.

As part of Operation Nam, police raided industrial sites in Madrid and Barcelona where they found the helicopters.

Dozens Killed in Yemeni Blast as Battles Rage

Government troops fought street battles with one of Yemen's leading tribes in the capital Thursday, leaving dozens dead as prosecutors sought the arrests of several tribal leaders.  A senior Defense Ministry official said that more than 28 people were killed in an explosion at a weapons depot in Sanaa during clashes with members of the al-Hashid tribe, which has turned against longtime President Ali Abdullah Saleh.  The official said the tribe shelled the area around the depot with heavy artillery. But the tribe rejected the accusation, saying it was choosing targets cautiously and had not attacked civilians.
