The joint UN-African Union (UNAMID) force said there were signs of military escalation in the north of the region. The insurgent Sudan Liberation Army (SLA) loyal to Abdel Waheed Mohamed al-Nur, which UNAMID said was also massing troops, denied the report. Washington on Monday announced a new policy to end violence in Darfur and Sudan's semi-autonomous south before national elections next year.

UN Deplores Rapes, Attacks in Congo

The United Nations (UN) has deplored the vicious attacks on some 5,400 women in one province of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Also, it has warned that flash-floods could hit East Africa over the coming months and deal a devastating blow to thousands of people who are already reeling from severe drought. The UN's humanitarian office predicted that the El Nino climate pattern in the Pacific basin could trigger heavy rain after the region was hit by terrible droughts, and estimates that 750,000 people in Kenya and 450,000 people in Somalia could be affected, while 50,000 people in Tanzania would be at risk.

It also quoted a foreman as saying there had been at least 50 people in the building at the time.

Security Officials Foil Hijack of Flight from Turkey

Security officials have foiled an attempt by a "drunken" Sudanese passenger to hijack an Egypt Air flight from Istanbul to Cairo and divert it to Jerusalem to "liberate" the city. The passenger, according to reports, took hold of a knife provided with meals for first-class passengers and threatened an air hostess sitting next to him. The 26-year-old said he wanted to "liberate" Jerusalem, a security official said. But air marshals overpowered him and the 87 passengers were able to continue their flight unharmed. It was not immediately clear if the man used a plastic or steel knife in his abortive hijack bid.
