JTF Kills 12 Militants

The Joint Task Force (JTF) in Rivers State, Friday, reportedly killed 12 suspected militants at Alakiri, near Okrika. They were killed when they allegedly attacked a naval patrol boat. The two boats used by the suspects were sunk and all the 12 occupants were killed in the attack. Two naval personnel were also wounded. But the Joint Revolutionary Council (JRC), a group comprising various militant groups in the Niger Delta has asked the JTF to explain the attack on its members or risk retaliatory attacks. The JRC insisted that the casualties were members of a peace mission on their way to the camps of the Niger Delta Vigilante group.

…MEND Accuses FG of Killing 20 Militants

Two gunmen were on Tuesday shot dead and 20 others arrested by men of the Joint Military Task Force (JTF) in a clash at the Abuja Waterfront in Port Harcourt. Four AK-7 rifles and 400 rounds of ammunition were recovered from the gunmen. Meanwhile, the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) has accused the JTF of extra-judicial killings of the 20 persons captured during the shootout. However, the Spokesman of JTF, Lt Col Sagir Musa described the allegation as false saying that the JTF are trained professional soldiers who obey the law of the society. He also paraded the said suspects and said that they would be interrogated and if found wanting would face the law.

75-Year-Old Chief Kidnapped in P/H

Three weeks after Chief Rising Ekwenna, a member of Rumuolumeni Council of Chiefs was kidnapped, Chief Achor Enwenemati was, penultimate Saturday, kidnapped from his residence by a group of 20 gunmen. The motive for the said kidnap is yet to be known since no group has called for payment of any ransom.

FG To Deal with Fraudulent Petrol Dealers

The Federal Government has vowed to deal decisively with petrol dealers who engage in sharp practices to the detriment of consumers. To show examples, three filling stations in Port Harcourt were sealed for adjusting their dispensers to dispense lesser quantities for the real price. Some of these stations were also discovered not to have the current verification certificates.

Bayelsa Would-Be Commissioner's Son Kidnapped

The 13-year-old son of a former Commissioner of Energy in Bayelsa State, Chief Diekivie Ikiogha, was abducted, Wednesday, by unknown gunmen at the gate of his school in Yenagoa. Ikiogha is one of those being considered for appointment as commissioners. The abduction came a few days after some youths from Fangbe community in the Yenagoa Local Council alleged that they were offered N2 million to kidnap the state Chairman of the Local Government Service Commission, Chief M. P. N. Ogbara.

Gunmen Abduct Community Leader in Anambra

Over 50 heavily armed men stormed Okpoko, Ogbaru LGA in Anambra State on Wednesday and abducted the President-General of the community, Hon. Edwin Emesinwa, during the one year anniversary celebration of the community’s executives in office. The gunmen shot sporadically into the air to scare guests at the occasion. The reason behind this is yet to be ascertained.

Oil Producing Companies Require Extra N4.8 Trillion for Operation

Oil Producers Trade Section (OPTS), an association of oil producing companies in Nigeria, says it requires additional $41 billion (N4.8 trillion) for its operation from 2008-2011. The Federal Government is planning $5 billion exploratory and production spending yearly during the period but OPTS says the fund is inadequate in view of the huge revenue potential in the industry. Basil Omiyi, chairman of OPTS, said on Wednesday in Lagos that the security challenge in the Niger Delta has increased the cost of doing business.

Bayelsa Vows to Tackle Militancy

Bayelsa State government has assured the people of the state that the problem of militancy would soon be over.  Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Gideon Ekeuwei, gave the assurance and said that the government would solicit the efforts of different groups and agencies to eliminate militancy in the state.

Shell Says No Progress Fixing Nigeria Oil Pipeline

There is no significant progress in repairs to a damaged oil pipeline in the Niger Delta, according Royal Dutch Shell. Shell’s Nembe Creek trunk line, in Rivers state was sabotaged in late-July and Shell had declared force majeure on Bonny Light crude exports to free itself from meeting its contractual obligations through to September. But Shell is now lamenting that the repair work is not progressing as expected due to some security concerns.

Niger-Delta: Nigeria Sitting On A Time Bomb - Group

A group, under the umbrella of Niger-Delta Non Violent Movement, has raised alarm that the lingering crisis that have engulfed Rivers State is a time bomb waiting to be detonated, except a state of emergency is declared in the state. President of the group, Mr. Erekosima Onengiya, noted that it is only through the declaration of a state of emergency that lasting peace and true reconciliation can be achieved in the state.

Julius Berger Shareholders Beg N/Delta militants

Shareholders of Julius Berger Nigeria Plc, on Thursday pleaded with militants in the Niger Delta not to make good their threat to attack the company. They charged the management of the company to reach out to the militants and find a way to appease them to save its business prospects in the region.

Police Arrest 35 Suspected Kidnappers in Imo

No fewer than 35 suspected kidnappers have been arrested by security operatives in Imo State in the past three months. This was disclosed by the state governor, Chief Ikedi Ohakim during a stakeholders meeting in Owerri on Wednesday. He, however, did not disclose the names of the arrested persons.

Chevron Recovers Oil Platform from Ijaw Women

Chevron Nigeria Ltd on Wednesday repossessed its Otunana Oil Producing Platform, following the withdrawal of hundreds of Ijaw women who invaded the facility on Monday to protest against oil spillage. The women seized the facility in Warri South LGA of Delta, but released it after an appeal by the President of Gbaramatu Youth Council, two day after. NDLEA to Destroy 750,000kgs of Cannabis in Edo

The Edo State Sector Commander of the Nigeria Drugs Law Enforcement Agency, Mr. Okey Ihebom, has stated that the command will destroy more than 750,000 kilogrammes of cannabis sativa from some suspected drug barons operating in the state. Ihebom stated that the total volume of cannabis known as Indian hemp seized by the operatives of the command, also involved about 985 bags of the hard drugs from an Owan-based drug baron.

Delta Indigenes to Get Oil Firm's Shares

Niger Delta indigenes would qualify to own a substantial portion of the first Nigerian upstream oil company to be listed on the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE).  This indication emerged from officials of CAMAC, US-based oil and gas exploration firm whose Nigerian affiliate, Allied Energy Plc, secured the NSE approval for public listing last Wednesday. Allied Energy is planning to offer 20 per cent of its preferential shares to regular indigenes of the region, to express its sensitivity to the people.

N’Delta Killings: Chevron’s Trial Begins Sept in US

Chevron Nigeria Limited will stand trial in the United States (US) in September, after exhausting all appeals meant to stop it from being tried for the alleged murder of villagers in the Niger Delta in two separate incidents between 1998 and 1999. A US District Court ruled last year that Chevron was directly involved in the alleged attacks by acting in consonance with Nigerian government security forces and therefore would stand trail.

Again, JTF Destroys 120 Illegal Refineries

The war on illegal oil refineries in the Niger-Delta is intensifying, with about 120 of such refineries destroyed in the last couple of days by the Joint Task Force in parts of Delta State. According to the Co-ordinator of the media unit of the JTF, Lt-Colonel Rabe Abubakar, illegal crude oil theft and bunkering would be drastically reduced, if the criminals could no longer run the illegal refineries.

Chevron Exceeds Daily Gas Supply

Chevron Nigeria Limited (CNL) has exceeded its daily supply of gas to the Nigerian Gas Company (NGC) by 30 million standard cubic feet (scf), with current daily contribution put at 184 million scf as against the 134 million scf daily target. Nathan Unuagbu of CNL said, at Asaba, that the company was prepared to contribute more to the NGC gas pool when facilities that would use it were in place, saying the nation’s gas reserve was one of the largest in the world, and called for supportive legislation to boost investment.

Niger Delta Rejects FG's Plan to Alter Gas Master Plan

Niger Delta leaders and groups, Sunday, rejected an apparent plan of the Federal Government to tinker with the National Gas Master Plan to construct pipelines to channel gas, produced in the Niger Delta to Lagos State, which some people consider as not posing any form of danger from militants, warning that it will increase crisis in the Niger Delta.

Abducted Lagos Council Boss Released in Warri

Twenty days after he was kidnapped, the sole administrator of Ikosi/Ejinrin Local Development Authority in Lagos State, Alhaji Ganiyu Adio Akintola, was on Tuesday released in Warri, Delta State. Akintola was abducted on July 31 from his house at Ejinrin, Epe in a commando-like operation by five armed men.

Police Foil House-To-House Robbery in Lagos

The Police in Lagos on Monday foiled a ‘house-to-house’ robbery operation at Awori-Abule-Egba area of Lagos State, arresting a suspected female member of the gang. A five-man robbery gang were carrying out a house-to-house operation, in which valuables were forcefully taken from the victims. Luck however ran against them when Anti-Robbery policemen arrived at the area.

Robbers Raid Police Station in Ekiti

Suspected armed robbers on Sunday raided the Aramoko Divisional Police Headquarters in Ekiti West Council area and freed some suspects detained in its cell. A competent police source revealed that three Policemen were injured during the raid.

Journalist Killed In Lagos

A member of the Editorial Board of Thisday Newspaper, Mr Paul Abayomi Ogundeji, was on Monday murdered in Lagos by some gunmen. This is coming barely two years after the chairman of its editorial board was murder in like manner. There are controversies surrounding his murder. While the police said he was ambushed and killed by some robbers, his family and friends believe that Ogundeji was killed by the police.

Soccer Fans Kill PHCN Manager

Football fans went gaga in Akute, Ogun State on Tuesday, killing a manager of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN), when the staff embarked on power disconnection during an Olympic football match between Nigeria and Belgium. Several other officials of the corporation were injured. The victim, Mr A.B. Ademolu, was trying to rescue a staff member called Akinwale Justus, from an angry mob, when he was struck with an object.

Detention of 28 Nigerian UN Soldiers Illegal —Falana

Lagos lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana, on Tuesday described as illegal, the continued detention of 28 Nigerian soldiers,who took part in the United Nations Peace Keeping Operations in Liberia and DSP Ibrahim Magu, former Head of the Economic Governance Unit of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).  Falana in a statement said that the allowances and entitlements of the soldiers were illegally withheld by a cartel in the Nigerian Army, and unlike their counterparts in the UN contingent, the Nigerian soldiers had to fend for themselves. They were even compelled to buy their uniforms and boots even though provisions were made for them by the UN”.

Kidnappers Seize OSOPADEC Chiefs

Suspected gunmen, operating in 16 boats, on Thursday kidnapped the chairman of the Ondo State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (OSOPADEC), Chief Adewale Omojuwa and five others. The gunmen struck in the oil rich Ilaje LGA of the state. Naval personnel are said to be on the trail of the abductors. No militant group has so far claimed responsibility for the kidnapping and no ransom demand has been made.

Serial Rapist Arrested

A notorious armed robber, who combines his nefarious trade with serial raping of his victims, has been nabbed by the police in Ibadan. Twenty six-year-old Sodiq Olayinwo (a.k.a One-Man Mopol) confessed to having raped more than 20 women during various robbery operations in the Oyo State capital. Olayinwo would be charged to court soon.

Nigeria Ranks High In Peace-Keeping

Nigerias’ permanent representative to the United Nations (UN), Mr Ralph Onemola, has disclosed that Nigeria ranks amongst the five highest contributors to global peace-keeping. This contribution according to Onemola, has led to a Nigerian being appointed as a military adviser to the UN.

Military Chiefs Go On Retirement

President Yar'Adua on Tuesday asked the nation's military chiefs, who were due for retirement last year to immediately proceed on retirement. He further announced replacements for them. The Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Paul Dike, is now the Chief of Defence Staff, taking over from General Andrew Azazi. Major-General A.B. Dambazau is now the Chief of Army Staff in place of Lieutenant-General Luka Yusuf. While Rear Admiral Isaiah Iko Ibrahim as Chief of Naval Staff replaces Vice Admiral Ganiyu Adekeye. Also approved is Air Marshal Oluseyi Petinrin as Chief of Air Staff.

Mitsubishi May Buy LNG from Nigeria's Floating Plant

Mitsubishi Corporation will decide on whether to buy the LNG cargo from Nigeria's first floating liquefied natural gas (LNG) project after the feasibility study for the project is complete. Mitsubishi reached an agreement with Flex LNG Ltd. and Peak Petroleum to jointly develop and market the LNG project. Nigeria's first floating LNG project will explore the development of Bilabri, Owaneri and Orobiri gas reserves using Flex LNG's Producer concept.

Police Smash Criminal Gang at Abuja Airport

The Police have arrested two persons suspected to be members of a crime syndicate that have been terrorising officials of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA), Abuja and residents in the environs. The Divisional Police Officer, while parading the suspects said they specialised in breaking into shops in the Aviation Community. He said they were arrested for breaking into a shop in the market where they stole handsets and money. The police are still on the trail of the principal suspect, identified as Usman.

Fake Policeman Arrested At Force Hqtrs

A man who was frequently seen dressed as a senior police officer at Force Headquarters, Abuja for three years was on Wednesday arrested as fake. The middle aged man whose tag name bears A.A. Kenny parades himself as a Chief Superintendent of Police. He was arrested by police detectives attached to the FHQ after establishing that his name is not on the register of the police.

EFCC Pushes For Own Court

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) says it is pushing a bill to enable it have a court that would prosecute those arrested by the commission for speedy justice. EFCC chairman, Mrs. Farida Waziri, who disclosed this admitted that prosecution of those arrested by the commission was prolonged by the judiciary, said the delay would not deter the body from carrying out its duties.

Suspects Issue N3b Dud Cheques to EFCC

An internal investigation is underway in the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over dud cheques, totalling N3.5 billion issued to the commission. It was learnt that the nine cheques for N3, 525, 868,500 billion were made out by advance fee fraud suspects who entered into plea bargaining with the commission between April 4 and November 30, last year. The EFCC is questioning some of its staff on how dud cheques worth over N3.5billion were received by the commission.

Fed Govt Ready to Select Gas Investors

Nigeria’s plan to shore up its gas potential on Wednesday received a boost as the Federal Executive Council (FEC) approved the next steps in the Gas Master Plan Investor Road show (GMPIR). The Minister of Information and Communication, Mr. John Odey, said government was ready for the investor selection process, investor pre-qualification and entity structure for the investment consortia. The FEC also approved contracts for power, education and mining sectors totalling about N9 billion.

EFCC Quizzes Okereke-Onyuike

Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Wednesday quizzed the Director-General of the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE), Prof. Ndi Okereke-Onyiuke over the N100 million she supposedly raised in support of Senator Barack Obama’s quest to become United States (US) president.  She was invited by the EFCC following reports that the Obama Campaign organisation had denied any link with her, her organisation or any other activity purportedly carried out in the name of Obama presidential bid.

Council Staff Nabbed In Taraba

Six staff of Takum LG council in Taraba state have been nabbed for attempting to defraud the council of N55million. They were nabbed when they forged the signature of the council chairman and that of the permanent secretary to withdraw the said amount from a bank. The bank sensing fraud contacted the chairman for verification.

Nigeria, Qatar Output to Boost World LNG to 208m Tonnes in 2009

With about 88 million tonnes of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) expected to flow from projects in Australia to Nigeria, global output is billed to rise by 14 per cent to about 208 million tonnes next year as forecasted by Andy Flower, an industry consultant. Flower attributed the major source of the global rise to new ventures in Qatar and Indonesia which account for more than a quarter of the world's supplies. The report said Nigeria could only supply about eight million tonnes, or about 72 percent of its first-half capacity.

Govt Forgives Siemens, Signs Power Pact with Germany

In what could be termed a policy somersault, the Federal Government has agreed to award some energy contracts to German firm, Siemens. The government had last year suspended Siemens over allegation of bribery. On Tuesday, it signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the German company for contracts in the energy sector.

INEC Takes Suspects to Court

The Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) says it has concluded plans to charge to court, politicians and their allies who are suspected of various electoral offences in the 2007 polls. INEC explained that the delay in charging them to court was because it wanted the various election petitions tribunals to conclude their activities before taking such suspects to court.

Nigerian Women Allege Assault by British Officials

Two Nigerian women have alleged that they were stripped naked and harassed sexually by British immigration officials in the guise of security screening. The women claimed that some female immigration officials randomly picked some Nigerian women in the midst of several other nationals who disembarked from the KLM flight from Nigeria through Dubai to London and ordered them into a room where they were reportedly stripped.  The Public Affairs section of the British High Commission in Nigeria has promised to look into the claim.

Natural Gas Projected To Peak At 70 Per Cent By 2025

The Vice President of the Nigerian Gas Association (NGA), Mr. Charles Osezua, said that natural gas is projected to rise by almost 70 per cent with an increase from 92 trillion cubic feet to 156 trillion cubic feet by 2025. Osezua said that natural gas is today seen as the commodity that will immensely contribute to Nigeria's energy sufficiency now and in the future.

Nigeria Restates Commitment to Security in West Africa

Minister of Defence, Alhaji Yayale Ahmed, has assured of Nigeria’s willingness and readiness to effect safety and security in the West African sub-region.  Addressing a meeting of the Chiefs of Defence and Force Commanders of ECOWAS countries in Abuja, he maintained that the ECOWAS region should be made secure to enable members deliver dividends of democracy to their nationals, warning that security threats such as terrorism, human trafficking and destabilization of government programmes should not be allowed to continue.

Following a rise in the wave of crime and the determination of the Government to control the menace, Vice President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan has called on all citizens, corporate bodies, communities and groups to partner with security agencies and the Government in restoring security in the nation.

Police Threaten Strike

The National Association of Police Specialist Officers has threatened to embark on indefinite strike if the police authorities fail to respond to its request for promotion of its members. A statement signed by the President of the Association said the police authorities have refused to promote any of its members since 2003 while the General Duty officers continued to receive promotions throughout the period.

Chinese Firm in Surprise Pullout from Rich Oil Block

Chinese oil firm, CNOOC may have relinquished 30 per cent of its 35 percent share in Oil Mining License (OML) 141 operated by a local firm, Emerald Energy Resources Ltd (EERL). Under a new agreement, CNOOC would keep a five percent stake as collateral for an $80 million loan to the project. OML 141 a shall-water block of 1,376 square metres in water depth under 25 metres, was upgraded from OPL 229 early this year, after exploration wells 'Barracuda' in April 2007 and 'Dila' later in 2007 yielded significant finds.

EFCC Quizzes Ondo Commissioner, Others

A commissioner and two permanent secretaries in Ondo State have been interrogated by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over alleged diversion of state funds totalling N12.5 billion to secret accounts.

Former NDDC Chair Remanded in Custody

An Abuja High Court, Monday, remanded a former chairman of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Ambassador Sam Edem, in police custody.  He is to remain in custody till the police prosecutor, Simeon Lough, briefs the court on the state of investigation. Edem is facing a three-count charge of conspiracy and stealing of about N800 million property of Federal Government.

Robbers Rob President’s Mother

Burglars allegedly invaded the home of President Yar’ Adua’s mother and robbed her of jewelleries and other valuables. It was learnt that the robbers beat the security around the house to have access to the room where the aged mother of the president was sleeping through the air conditioner opening.  The thieves were unable to unscramble the safe in the room to have access to its contents. No casualty was recorded.

Falling Oil Prices: OPEC May Cut Output

The Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) may decide to cut its oil output quota as the price of crude risks falling under $100 per barrel. Centre for Global Energy Studies (CGES), in its latest monthly report released on Monday said "the worsening economic outlook suggests that oil prices have further to fall”, but that the OPEC may act to prevent prices from falling too far.

Musharraf Resigns as Pakistani President

Pakistani President, Pervez Musharraf, resigned as president on Monday. He had spent nine turbulent years in office during which he got his country involved in the United States-led war on terrorism. Musharraf was facing impeachment by the country's Parliament.

Russia Moves Missiles into Georgia - US

United States officials have alleged that Russia has moved short-range SS-21 missile launchers into South Ossetia since fighting there came to a halt, possibly putting the Georgian capital Tbilisi in range. The development came amid signs that Russia was adding ground troops and equipment to its force in South Ossetia and Abkhazia, strengthening its hold over the breakaway regions. But Russian Military authorities have said that the country has begun pulling back its troops from Georgia because of a promise by their President, Dmitry Medvedev.

About two electoral officials were killed in an ambush by masked gunmen in Iraq. The attackers, according to reports opened fire on the bus, which carried the officials and some electoral materials.

Zimbabwe’s Peace Talks Stalled

Power sharing talks to broker peace in Zimbabwe has come to a deadlock as both the ruling party and the opposition have refused to shift on their stands. Both parties refused to give further details but agreed that it is at a deadlock. This is coming amidst revelations that President Mugabe planned to inaugurate the country’s parliament, an act that the opposition considers unfavourable.

Australian Jailed For Killing Tourist

An Australian man has been jailed in Thailand for the murder of an American tourist during a drunken quarrel. William Douglas, 65, admitted to shooting Gary Poretsky, 46, after they got into an argument at a restaurant in the city of Chiang Mai.

Militants Behead ‘Spy’ in Waziristan

Militants beheaded a man accused of spying for the United States-led NATO forces, penultimate Saturday in North Waziristan. The beheaded body of 40-year-old Said Munir, a resident of Zoee Saidgi, was found the following day. Locals also found a note pinned to the body, which read that Munir had been spying for NATO forces.

Fresh Fighting Leaves 47 Dead In Kurram

About 47 people including 43 militants were reportedly killed and several others injured in fresh fighting between local tribesmen and pro-Taliban militants in Kurram Agency on Sunday. Residents said Sunni tribesmen torched three villages belonging to Shia tribes. According to reports, the overall death toll from 11 days of fighting has risen to 194, with 286 injured.

Bakassi: Camerounian Soldiers Seek Compensation

Few days after Nigeria ceded the Bakassi Peninsula to Cameroun, reports said on Tuesday that the ranks of the Camerounian armed forces are clamouring for compensation after the handover. According to them, they demonstrated restraint, defended and delivered the country from a full blown confrontation with the Nigerian Army and withstood provocations from a militant group.

Zambian President, Levy Mwanawasa, died in a French hospital on Tuesday, several weeks after suffering a stroke at an African Union summit in Egypt. Mwanawasa, 59, was a favourite with Western donors for tackling corruption in the southern African country.

146 Die in Madrid Jet Crash

A Spanish tourist jet carrying 173 people careered off a Madrid airport runway and broke up in flames on Wednesday, killing at least 146 people and injuring several others. The plane made an emergency landing just after an attempted take-off from Madrid-Barajas Airport after one of its engines developed a fault. Madrid Airport cancelled departures after the crash and restricted the number of flights arriving.
