Police Foil Bullion Van Robbery, Recover N335m

The police in Rivers State on Wednesday recovered over N335 million from suspected robbers who had raided a bullion van that was on its way to Port Harcourt from Aba. The hoodlums attacked the van around Obehie area with over seven AK 47 rifles and two General Purpose Machine guns which were recovered with over 300 rounds of ammunition, while one of the attackers was killed.

Breakdown Of Gas Turbine Paralyses P/H Refinery

Following the breakdown of the gas turbine that supplies power at the Port Harcourt Refinery 2 in Eleme, loading of products has been paralyzed since last week due to gaunt services, and fuel tankers are made to stay on queues longer than necessary. The turbine is the only source of electricity to the refinery.

2 Nabbed for Attempting to Swindle Monarch

Two men have been arrested for attempting to swindle the traditional ruler of Eha-Alumonah in Nsukka LGA of Enugu state and a key player in the agitation for the creation of Adada State of N900 million. The suspects from Edo state, allegedly forged a letter, purportedly by Vice- President Goodluck Jonathan, requesting for N900 million to facilitate the creation of Adada State.

MASSOB Wants 2,000 Members Released

Mr Alphonsus Ajuka, Regional Administrator, Movement for Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), Friday, called on the FG to release 2,000 of its members currently in prison custody. Ajuka regretted that in spite of the non-violent posture of MASSOB, its members were being persecuted by agents of the government.

Robbers Kill Three Police Officers, Injure Others

An Assistant Superintendent of police in Imo State and two other officers in his division were on Thursday shot dead by armed robbers in Owerri. The robbers were said to have laid ambush at an excavation site along the road close to a council headquarters when the police officers on duty ran into them.

Violence In Bakassi - Cameroonian Policemen Killed, 300 Nigerians Declared Missing

Violence erupted on Monday in the Bakassi area of Cameroon, leading to the abduction of the Cameroonian deputy governor of the region, Felix Morfan, and the killing of some policemen by unidentified gunmen. Many Nigerians living in the area fled the area for fear of more attacks. This has aroused fears of a possible showdown between Nigeria and Cameroon, already, Nigerians in the Peninsula have declared 300 of their compatriots missing, while more than 1000 refugees, mostly women and children, have arrived Ikang Central in the New Bakassi LGA in Cross River State.

Bakassi: 15 Nigerians Die in Boat Mishap

About 15 Nigerians, fleeing from the Gendarmes in the Bakassi Peninsula have died in a boat mishap following reprisal attacks from Cameroonian authorities in the crisis that had enveloped the area since Monday when a top officer of the Cameroonian government was allegedly abducted and suspected to have been killed by militants in the area.

Militants Kidnap Oil Magnate’s Father

About 16 armed men stormed the Opobo country home of Mr. Festus MacPepple on Thursday, to kidnap him.  Mr. Pepple said to be in his seventies is the father of oil and gas magnate, Henry Pepple. His security man who attempted to confront the criminals was however killed in the attack. No group has claimed responsibility for the kidnap. Security agencies said they have commenced the tracking of his whereabout.

Falana Writes IG, Accuses Shell of Importing Arms

Mr Femi Falana, counsel to the leader of the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND), Mr. Henry Okah, who is facing treason charges, has written to the Inspector General of Police, Mike Okiro, alleging that the Nigerian Army and Shell are involved in the proliferation of arms and ammunition in the Niger Delta.

Man Nabbed with 22 Pregnant Girls

A medical doctor, who runs a maternity hospital where under-aged girls allegedly breed babies for sale was, on Monday, arrested in Enugu. The man, Dr Kenneth Akunna, was arrested by officials of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC). Commandant of the Corps also paraded 22 pregnant girls whose ages ranged between 15 and 18 years from the maternity home. But Akunna insists that his maternity was duly registered as a Non- Governmental Organisation (NGO) with the Enugu State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development.

Police Investigate Death Of Five In Enugu

The Police have requested National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to analyse a sample of the food eaten by five members of a family, who died after a meal in Enugu last week. Mr Suleiman Fakai, the Enugu State commissioner of police, explained that the cause of their death would be ascertained through an autopsy and the analysis.

Again, Gunmen Attack Addax Vessel

Barely 24 hours after a security vessel belonging to Addax Petroleum, was attacked offshore, another vessel belonging to the company was again attacked Tuesday morning. Reports say one naval personnel was killed, while two civilians were wounded. The vessel was under the guard of naval personnel from Calabar.

A taxi driver was burnt while four vehicles were destroyed on Tuesday when a fuel tanker went up in flames at Iyana Oworo Bus Stop on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. The real cause of the incident could not be immediately verified.

Akwa Ibom, Centrica Plan $12b LNG Project

Akwa Ibom State government has concluded arrangements to partner a British gas and power firm, Centrica Plc, in the construction of a new $12 billion (N1.5trillion) liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant in the state. The state governor, Godswill Akpabio said that the Tom Shot Island in Mbo LGA is a prospective location for the plant.

Gunmen Kidnap Enyimba Boss

There were fears on Tuesday that the Chairman of the Enyimba International Football Club of Aba, Chief Felix Anyansi-Agwu, had been kidnapped by gunmen in Umuahia, Abia State. A source said that Anyansi-Agwu was forcibly taken away by the kidnappers minutes after he left the Government House in Umuahia. It was also learnt that the kidnappers demanded N16m ransom for his release.

At least eight persons were allegedly killed and many others wounded, during the conduct of LG elections in Akwa Ibom State, weekend. Police authority in the state could not deny or confirm the report, as they claim to be awaiting official security reports from Ini Divisional Police Officer (DPO).

Commissioner Demands Compensation From Shell For Oil Spill

Abia State Environment Commissioner, Emeka Onuoha, says the SPDC must pay compensation for the environmental pollution it caused in the oil producing communities of the state. Onuoha said that the only way to calm frayed nerves and forestall violence by affected communities was for Shell to pay compensation for the pollution.

Oil Spillage Claims Three Lives In Calabar

Three persons, penultimate Thursday, allegedly lost their lives during fish expeditions in Ekorinim Community of Cross River state. The victims inhaled petroleum fumes leaking from NNPC burst's pipes.  The Depot Manager, (NNPC) Calabar, Peter Akpan, said that he was aware of the spillage, but not the numbers of casualties. He said that the spillage was caused by vandals whom he said have cause the depot to loose one thousand five hundred metrics tonnes of fuel a week.

Akwa Ibom Govt Plans To Relocate Ikot Ekpene Prisons

Akwa Ibom State government is contemplating the relocation of the Federal Prisons at Ikot Ekpene, to a more convenient location. Akpabio said the present administration was partnering with the Ministry of Internal Affairs to relocate the prison to enhance the aesthetic value of the city.

NIMASA Petitions Reps Over NLGNs $132m Debt

The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) has taken the management of the Nigerian Liquefied Natural Gas Company (NLNG) to the House of Representatives over a $132,389,604.58 owed it by the gas company.  NIMASA said the unpaid debt is as a result of NLNG’s refusal to come to terms with the compulsory three percent levy on wet cargo of gas lifted since 2004 in accordance with the Cabotage Law.

Mobil Signs N150m MoU on ICT Training

Mobil Producing Nigeria (MPN), operator or NNPC/MPN joint venture, Friday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) involving Akwa Ibom State Government, International Business Machines, IBM, and knowledge Partners Limited (KPL), on Information and Communication and Telecommunication (ICT), training programme for 450 unemployed graduates. Rifa Umoren, Public Relations Manager stated that the training programme valued at the cost of 150 million naira was going to last for three years.

JTF Overruns Militants in Warri

Troops of the Joint Task Force in the Niger Delta, Sunday, attacked suspected militants camps in Delta and Bayelsa States. Most of the camps were destroyed during the invasion with a large cache of arms and ammunition recovered.  Casualty figures on both sides could not be confirmed immediately, but the JTF claims that three suspects were killed.

N’Delta: Presidency Summons JTF Commander, Peace Panel

The Presidency has summoned the Commander of the Joint Task Force in the Niger Delta, Brig.-Gen. Wuyep Rimtip, and the leaders of the Committee on Conflict Resolution and Peace in the region, to Abuja over the recent crisis in the region.
Investigation revealed that Rimtip was called to explain the reasons for the attacks on some Ijaw communities in Bayelsa, Delta, Edo and Ondo states.

Delta Assembly Tackles Shell Over Mass Sack

Peeved by the failure of the SPDC, to appear before it, the Delta State House of Assembly on Thursday issued fresh summons on the firm. The earlier summons followed the recent mass sack of 2,500 workers. The Lawmakers contend that the mass sack if not well handled would increase militancy in the Niger Delta.

JTF Boss Disagrees With Militants On Missing Arms

Commander of the Joint Task Force (JTF) on the Niger-Delta, Brigadier-General Nanven Rimtip, Tuesday, disagreed with a militant group, the Deadly Underdogs, on the whereabouts of weapons snatched from his men by the militants during an attack, about three months ago, on a Chevron- Texaco flow station at Olero Creek in Delta State. While a senior operative of the Deadly Underdogs said that the weapons fell into the water. The JTF boss dismissed the story as laughable.

Militants Storm Oil Security Vessel, Kill Naval Officer

Some gunmen in the Niger Delta, Monday, continued with their attacks on oil facilities, this time storming a security vessel working for Canada’s Addax Petroleum Corporation. The attack resulted in the killing of a Nigerian Navy seaman and injuring several others before being repelled by reinforcements from the military. With the success recorded during raids the JTF has hinted of more raids on militants’ camps.

MEND Vows To Retaliate Attack On Ijaw Communities

Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger-Delta (MEND), Monday, says it will retaliate the invasion and burning of some communities in Edo, Bayelsa and Ondo states by the Joint Task Force on the Niger-Delta on Sunday. MEND alleges that the invading force allegedly carried out terrible atrocities such as rape, vandalism and murder before razing down houses.

MEND Leader Appears In Court ...Insists On Open Trial

The leader of the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND), Henry Okah has protested his secret trial by the Federal Government. Okah, on Tuesday in an Abuja High Court, insisted on an open trial at the Federal High Court in Jos.  Okah is facing allegations of gun running and treason.

EFCC Arrests Edo Commissioner

The Edo State Commissioner for Higher Education, Chief Sylvester Ewanehi was on Tuesday arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Chief Ewanehi was arrested based on a petition written by some members of staff of Esan South East LG council, alleging that the commissioner, during his tenure as chairman of the LG council, embezzled over N360m of council’s fund.

Trigger-Happy Soldiers Raid School

Trigger-happy soldiers from the Joint Task Force (JTF) in the Niger Delta last weekend went on rampage in a school community of Ufuoma, a host community to Delta State School of Health Technology, leaving in its wake four students shot and scores of others sustaining severe bullet injuries. The soldiers were allegedly hired by a 200 level female student to scare away some other persons.

3-Year-Old Disappears From School In Lagos

A 3-year-old girl, Ogochukwu Momoh has been declared missing after she was dropped off at school by her parents but could not be found at the close of school. Ogochukwu parents, Mr and Mrs. Jude Momah, are now engrossed in a legal tussle with the authorities of Handmaids International Catholic School, Surulere, Lagos for not being able to account for their child. According to Mr Jude Momah's lawyer, Barr Allen Agbaka, the school authority is brandishing a list of powerful people who would alter the course of justice in their favour.

Oyo Civil Defence Corps Ruins N1.6m Hemp Biz For Drug Barons

At the end of two months intelligent gathering on the operations of the Indian hemp merchants, the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) swooped in on the suspects and arrested them with the substance suspected to be Indian hemp worth about N1.6m. Another 2-Storey Building Collapses In Lagos, Carpenter Electrocuted

About five persons were on Monday evening injured and properties worth millions of naira destroyed as another building collapsed in the Somolu area of in Lagos. In another development, a carpenter who was repairing a shop roof was electrocuted. The deceased was electrocuted following the sudden restoration of power by the Power Holding Company of Nigeria.

Gunmen Attack Ondo PDP Chief

A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo State, Williams Orojo, Thursday, escaped death when a gang of hoodlums allegedly attacked his home and shot him several times.  The party had sent a petition to the Commissioner of Police on alleged threats on the lives of prominent members of the PDP in the state.

Police Arraign 27 Over Razed Station

No fewer than 27 suspects were arraigned in Lagos for allegedly setting fire to the Mowo Police Station on the Lagos/Badagry Expressway.  The suspects, aged between 18 and 42, were docked at the Ebute-Metta Chief Magistrates Court on a four-count charge of conspiracy, stealing, willful damage and arson.

Mechanic Arraigned for Manslaughter

A motor mechanic, Ibrahim Ololade, has been arraigned for allegedly killing the breadwinner of a family of six, Mr Daniel Chatman, a commercial motorcyclist. Ololade appeared before an Ibadan Chief Magistrate's Court to answer to a charge of manslaughter. The accused, who pleaded not guilty, was, however, granted bail by Chief Magistrate O. Ajadi in the sum of N100, 000 and two sureties.

Police Smash Trans-Border Car Snatching Syndicate

It was a day of reckoning for a six-man trans-border armed robbery gang, which specialized in snatching exotic cars in Nigeria and selling them in Cotonou, as they were recently arrested by the Zone 2 police command in Ogun state. A member of the gang alleged that their leader who is on the run is a soldier and he them with arms and ammunition.

Banks Move against Bullion Van Robberies

The frequent attacks on bullion vans in the country may soon be curbed following the engagement of the services of a South African integrated cash management firm, SBV Services (Pty) Limited. SBV, owned by the country’s four largest banks, is expected to commence operations in Nigeria this month and is expected to provide bullion van services for banks and financial houses.

66 Nigerians On Death Row In Indonesia, 23,584 In Foreign Prisons - Minister

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ojo Madueke has said that that 66 Nigerians are awaiting execution in Indonesia over drug trafficking and other related crimes. He said the ministry had made an appeal for the death sentences to be commuted. He further stated that about 23,584 Nigerians are currently serving prison terms in Europe.

Prisons Service Blame Jail Breaks On Congestion

The Nigeria Prisons Service has blamed jail breaks in some prisons in the country on congestion. He added that majority of the prisoners across the country were awaiting trial and had spent more than five years in custody.

Police Nab 4 Kid Rapists In Kaduna

The Kaduna State Police Command yesterday paraded four men who were alleged to have raped underage girls in their neighborhoods. The four men reportedly raped underage girls whose ages were given to be between six and 12 years old, according to the Acting Commissioner of Police, DCP Adams Audu.

OPEC Countries to Invest $160bn to Increase Oil Output

National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), has shelved its planned industrial action to protest the deplorable condition of the nation’s public highways including access roads to the refineries and soaring diesel prices. 20 Persons Electrocuted Monthly —NERC

An average of 20 incidents of electrocution is recorded across the country on a monthly basis, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission said on Friday.  Determined to arrest the trend, NERC gave electricity distribution companies in the country a 45-day ultimatum to submit the health and safety audit report of their installations.

Court Orders NNPC to Pay $22.6m

President Yar’Adua has said that his administration will work towards raising Nigeria’s crude oil production capacity from the current two million barrels per day to four million barrels per day by 2010.

FG Withdraws Soldiers from CJ’s Residence

The Federal Government on Thursday told the Federal High Court in Lagos, that it had withdrawn soldiers from official residence of the Chief Judge of the court. The property is a subject of litigation between the court and agents of the Federal Government.

Police Arrest Six Over Indian Hemp

The Niger State Police Command on Thursday arrested four persons with 100 bags of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, weighing 50-kilogramme each. Also paraded were two other persons who were arrested at various times in different operations and were found to have possessed some quantities of Indian hemp.

Police Arrest 20 Gombe Students

About 20 students of Government Comprehensive Day Secondary School and Government Technical College, Gombe; have so far been arrested by the state Police Command for allegedly fighting with dangerous weapons which led to the closure of the two schools. The state government had already set up a committee to investigate the violent clash between the students of the two institutions

Nigeria Seeks to Head UN Human Rights Council

Nigeria and Djibouti have interest in heading the UN Human Rights Council, the country’s Ambassador to Switzerland, Dr Martin Uhomoibhi, disclosed on Thursday. Uhomoibhi believes that Nigeria would be preferred. The Council is currently headed by Europe, represented by Romania.

Traffic Warden Gets Knocked Down In FCT

A traffic warden, John Solomon, was during the week knocked down in Abuja at the Bolingo Hotel intersection along the Olusegun Obasanjo Way when a Toyota Camry lost control after being hit by a Toyota Primera.
