Police Deploy Anti-Terrorist Squads in Lagos, FCT, Others

The police high command has deployed anti-terrorist squads in Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt and Kano. Although police sources say that the action is aimed at checking violence in the cities, a top security source claimed that the decision was informed by an alleged threat by a terrorist group, Al-Qaeda, to bomb some parts of Nigeria.

FG Moves to Tackle Food Crisis

Determined to avoid imminent food crisis, the Federal Government has fixed May 31, as deadline for the supply of fertilizer to all states. Minister of Agriculture and Water Resources, Sayyadi Abba Ruma said that three contractors have been engaged to supply 650,000 metric tons of fertilizer, to ease monitoring of product quality and distribution.

Yar'adua Orders Arrest Of Aviation Chiefs Over Missing Plane

President Yar'Adua has ordered the arrest and interrogation officials of the National Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) over the alleged doctoring of the transcript of the Voice Flight Recorder between the pilot of the missing Beech craft plane and the Control Tower of the Port Harcourt Airport. The committee investigating the disappearance of the aircraft discovered that apart from doctoring the transcript, the tape of the conversation was also erased.

Waziri is New EFCC Chairman

The Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Mike Okiro, on Tuesday ordered all state commissioners of police to immediately stop giving police escorts to banks with poor security arrangement. Willbros, an oil and gas industry services firm, has agreed to pay over $32 million in fines and forfeitures to settle allegations of bribery, according to documents made available by the United States Justice Department. Willbros, accused of bribing Nigerian and Ecuadorian officials, violated the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act which prohibits American citizens or companies from bribing officials to get business deals.

Niki Tobi Kicks Against Stringent Bail Conditions

NLNG Train 7 May Be Put on Hold

The Nigerian Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) may put the construction of its seventh train on hold to allow investors evaluate the new gas policy, which requires gas producers to allot part of their output to the domestic market, rather than exporting it. Bisina Drags AGF, Defence Chief to Court Over Arrest

FG Begins Decongestion of Prisons

The Federal Government has commenced efforts to decongest the country’s prisons by moving inmates on awaiting trial from crowded prisons to other places.  The Controller-General of Prisons, Mr. Olusola Ogundipe has directed the removal of 250 awaiting trial in mates of the Ikoyi Prison to the Maximum Security Prison in Kirikiri, Lagos, where they have built more blocks to accommodate more inmates.

Militants Kill 2 Cops in Bayelsa

Suspected militants on Monday killed two policemen in Bayelsa state. The two men, Sgt William Idiseye and Cpl Allison Negite, were shot at close range by a group of rampaging armed youths. Attempts to help the dying cops by some community leaders were countered with sporadic warning shots by the rampaging youths, who were reported to have also carted away arms and ammunition from the police station.

Gunmen Hijack Oil Vessel

Gunmen on Tuesday night seized a Chevron oil supply vessel, Lourdes Tide, with 11 crew members including a Ukrainian and a Portuguese. The rest were said to be Nigerians. The gunmen are demanding N30 million as ransom for the release of the vessel. The vessel had left Onne, Rivers State, for Escravos, Delta State.

NIPCO to Build Refinery

Chairman, Nigeria Independent Petroleum Company (NIPCO), Chief Best Anekwe, has said   the company will build a refinery before the end of the year. Anekwe said NIPCO identified with on-going reform in the oil and gas industry, and would, therefore, encourage the establishment of more refineries.

Mobil to Site $35b Gas Plant in Akwa Ibom State

Mobil Producing Nigeria Unlimited has concluded plans to site a $35 billion gas-gasoline plant in Akwa Ibom State, prompting the state Governor Godswill Akpabio to pledge his full support for the project. Governor Akpabio assured that his administration would provide a space for the company at the coastal area.

Protest As Police Shoot Bus Conductor

Commercial bus drivers on Thursday took to the streets in Enugu to protest the killing of a bus conductor by a police officer. The youth was by the roadside when he was hit by bullets from a patrol team. The state Commissioner of Police, Alhaji Suleiman Fakai, admitted that the incident was an error from the police but urged them not to take the law into their hands. He promised to investigate the matter.

20,000 Cops Deployed for Bayelsa Guber Poll

No fewer than 20,000 policemen will be drafted to Bayelsa State, for the forthcoming governorship election, slated for May 24, 2008, to forestall breakdown of law and order. An Appeal Court, which sat in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, April 15 this year, nullified the election of Timipre Sylva and ordered fresh election.

Niger Delta Summit Decries Okah's Secret Trial

At the just concluded Niger Delta Peace Summit held in Port Harcourt, Rivers State capital, there was a public outburst on the continuous secret trial of the leader of the Movement for the Emancipation of Niger Delta (MEND) by the Federal Government of Nigeria. Ambassador Olusegun Olusola, President of the African Refugee Foundation (ARF) condemned the secret arrangement by the Nigerian State. 3 Houses Torched in Communal Clash

American Dies In Vessel Cabin

A United States of America (USA) national, Steve Degerstrom, was on Sunday found dead in his cabin on a ship anchored at the Onne Port in Rivers State. Degerstrom is suspected to have died in his sleep over the night. The cause of his death had not been ascertained as at the time of filing this report.

10 killed As Cultists Clash in Edo

About 10 persons were reportedly killed in Benin City, Edo State, in the last week following renewed clashes among cult groups from different higher institutions in the state.  The clashes were reported to be between the Eiye and the Black Axe confraternities. Trouble was said to have started when a leader of one of the rival cult groups was killed in the Ekehuan Road area of Benin City.

ASP Shot Dead in Bullion Van Attack

An Assistant Superintendent of Police was shot dead while several other persons were wounded on Tuesday when dare-devil armed robbers attacked a bullion van conveying money for a new generation bank in Delta State. The money in the van, alongside Arms and ammunitions belonging to the police, were taken away by the robbers.

19 Feared Dead in Road Accident in Delta

About 19 persons were on Tuesday, killed in a road accident that occurred along Benin-Agbor expressway involving a minibus that   veered off the road before somersaulting. All the occupants were burnt to death. Officials of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) watched helplessly as the victims were burnt to ashes.

More that 10 officers of the Nigerian Prisons Service were Monday given the beating of their lives when men of the Nigerian Police Force invaded the Nigerian Prisons at Oko, near Benin in search of officers alleged to have assaulted a traffic police for daring to stop a Black-Maria conveying prisoners.

Orogun Residents Raise Alarm Over Toxic Dump

Residents of Orogun community in Ughelli, Delta State have raised alarm over alleged dumping of toxic substance in the community by a contracting firm, working for an oil company in the Niger-Delta. It is alleged that for some years now, agents of the firm had been dumping the said substance into a well, operated by the oil company in the area. Some of the villagers claimed that the toxic waste was already causing damage to their farmlands and emitting disgusting odour all over the town.

Vehicle Kills Two Pupils In Osogbo

Emotions boiled on Monday in Osogbo, Osun State when a Peugeot station wagon vehicle ran into a group of pupils crossing the road in front of their school. Two of the pupils, a boy and a girl, died instantly. The gateman taking the pupils across the road was also injured in the incident. Police Public Relations Officer, said the driver would be charged to court as soon as investigations were concluded.

Police Arrest Nine In Oyo Over Death Of Alaafin’s Aide

Nine persons have been picked up by homicide detectives of the Oyo State in connection with murder of an aide of the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi. The Alaafin’s aide, Saheed Oladejo, was shot in a fight that ensued after a court ruling. The police have declared seven other wanted.

Court Jails Woman For Trafficking In Cocaine

A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos on Monday sentenced a 37-year-old woman, Sainyo Philomena, to 18 months' imprisonment for trafficking in cocaine.  Sainyo was caught on March 25, 2007, at a Screening Point of the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos, on her way to Italy. She pleaded guilty to the charge after it was read to her.

Robbery Kingpin Held At Traffic Jam

Friday Oghie who was allegedly the leader of a three man robbery gang has been arrested by the police in Lagos. He is now helping the police at State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, Panti, to fish out his group in crime. The suspect was nabbed following a distress call that robbers were operating at the Eko Bridge.

100 Die In Lagos Explosion

No fewer than 100 people were on Thursday killed in a pipeline fire at Ijagun, Alimosho LGA of Lagos, razing down several buildings. The pipeline, which had been vandalised by some suspected criminals, caught fire and exploded at about 11am.  Policemen were immediately drafted to the area to ensure security, but no official of the National Emergency Agency (NEMA), Lagos State officials or any other government official was immediately available.
