House Names 26-Man Panel to Probe NNPC

The House of Representatives has set up a committee of 26 members to probe the activities of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), its subsidiaries, and the Directorate of Petroleum Resources (DPR). The probe period, originally planned to cover May 1999 to May 2007 when Chief Olusegun Obasanjo was president, has now been extended to cover till date.

Attempted Murder of Akunyili: Court Grants Suspect Bail

Francis Okoye, the Onitsha drug-dealer and one of the seven persons accused of serially attempting to kill the Director General of the National Agency for Food Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Prof Dora Akunyili, was on Monday granted bail by an Abuja high court in the sum of N2million.  The trial judge cited his deteriorating health condition as one of the reasons for moving in his favour.

FCT Probe: Witness Escapes Abduction

A witness in the on-going Senate probe of the Ministry of the Federal Capital Territory, Mr. Jimi Lawal, was, Thursday, saved from an attempt to abduct him moments after testifying before the panel.  He was rescued by security personnel at the National Assembly.

Oil Contracts: FG Sacks ‘Brief Case’ Companies

The Federal Government has dropped 18 of the companies that recently got contracts to lift Nigeria’s crude oil. There were initial reports that most of the companies that won the contracts were “brief case” concerns with no known investments in Nigeria.

Britain Tasks Nigeria on Oil Wealth, Fake Products

Britain has listed the use of Nigeria's oil wealth for the benefit of the citizens and a crackdown on the dumping of fake products in the country as among its major expectations from the FG.  It said the expectations were informed by Nigerians' repeated requests that the country's oil and gas resources be used to better their living conditions and that the damage being done the local economy by fake goods from abroad be tackled.

Ex-Gov Diverted 'Missing' Plane - Plane Found In an African Country

The Beech craft 1900D aircraft declared missing since March 15 may have been flown out of the country on the order of a former governor to weaken evidences against him in his ongoing trial by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Sources indicated that the aircraft owned by the former governor, was flown to a West African country as directed by the embattled ex-governor.

1,600 Nigerians in British Prisons

British minister of state for prison affairs, Mr. David Hanson, on Thursday in Abuja said that 1,600 Nigerians are serving prison terms in Britain. The minister of state for interior, Alhaji Hassan Haruna, said Nigeria would work toward the repatriation of Nigerians in British prisons to complete their terms in Nigeria.

FG Lauds Private Guards Operators

Godwin Abbe Minister of Interior, on Thursday lauded Private Security Guards Companies (PSGs) in the country and charged them see it as a duty to their country and clients to ensure that criminals have no hiding place any more. The minister informed the gathering that the NSCDC had recently conducted a nationwide tour to inspect hundreds of PSGs, adding that findings from the tour were encouraging.

120 Students Ill after Eating Beans

After taking a lunch of cooked beans Sunday afternoon, 120 students of Government Girls Secondary School, Doma, in Gombe State, were rushed to the Gombe Specialist Hospital where they were treated for food poisoning. The state government had directed all the principals of boarding schools in the state to suspend serving of beans as meal until further notice.

OPEC to Increase Production

Crude oil price at the international market rose to a record high of $119.74 a barrel on Tuesday, just as the Organisation of Petroleum Export Countries (OPEC) said it plans to increase production capacity by five million barrels per day by 2012 and nine million by 2020. It was also learnt that Nigeria will remain in OPEC despite her inability to meet her production quota following unrest in the Niger Delta.

A Pan-African oil firm quoted on the London Stock Exchange, Afren, has entered a partnership with an indigenous company, Oriental Energy Resources, to jointly develop the Ebok Field located offshore Nigeria.

Firm Invents New Technology To Tackle Oil Spill

In order to promote the local content initiative of the Federal Government in the Oil and Gas industry, which is also capable of saving the country $3.72 (about N446.6bn) yearly has been discovered. It is a product called "Olesorbent (polymer)" for oil spill management, with 100 per cent raw materials sourced locally. The country currently imports the product at $6.2 billion (about N774 bn) yearly.

Nigeria Set to Ensure Safety of Navigation, Protect Seafarers

Nigeria has initiated moves aimed at enhancing safety of navigation within her coastal waters and promoting compliance with the International Labour Convention on maritime labour. The country has started to clear her coast of wrecks, derelicts and has also been issuing identity document to seafarers in compliance with the ILO's Convention relating to Seafarers Identity Document (SID).

President Yar'Adua has directed the Minister of State for Transportation (Aviation), Mr Felix Hyatt, to begin an urgent investigation into a March 27, 2008 incident in which British Airways (BA) allegedly ordered more than 100 Nigerians off its flight to Lagos for protesting against the brutal treatment of a deportee aboard. He made it clear to all foreign airlines operating in Nigeria that his administration will not tolerate the subjection of Nigerian passengers to less than acceptable standards of treatment.''

Warders, Policemen Clash At Party

Prison warders and policemen clashed in Gusau, the Zamfara State capital over allegations that a policeman suspected to be drunk had held a bride by her breast during a wedding party organized by prison warders for their colleague. Four policemen were allegedly beaten to a pulp by the angry warders.

Police Disburse N1bn Gratuity to Retired Officers

About N1,110,430, 340.84 is being paid to retired police officers and deceased officers next of kins as pensions and gratuity in the 36 states of the federation this week by the Police Pensions Office. The newly appointed Director of the office, Mr Essai Dangabar, said that payment has already commenced in the states command headquarters.

The Sabon-Gari Market in Kano was hastily shut on Saturday as hoodlums took advantage of a protest against alleged desecration of the Qur’an, to loot shops and cause a general commotion. Trouble began when some persons noticed inscriptions on a shop door that they claimed were insulting to Muslims. Total, Shell Face Last Chance For Iran Deals

Iran has said that a June deadline would be the last chance for France's Total and Royal Dutch Shell to finalise deals on developing two major oil and gas assets in the Persian Gulf. After protracted talks, Iran urged Total and Shell in October to finalise their deals on the giant South Pars gas project by mid-2008 or lose the contracts. The two oil firms had delayed investment allegedly due to soaring costs.

Adamawa Poll: Police Arrest Ex-D’Gov, 8 Lawmakers

The Adamawa State Police Command on Tuesday arrested some Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)  and Action Congress Party (AC) top stalwarts, including  a former Deputy Governor and  Chief of Staff  to the immediate past Governor of the State. Irate Youths Burn Down Police Station, 30 Arrested

As violence continued to trail the party primaries conducted by the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) in Bauchi State, irate youths on Monday burnt down the Gumau Police Station as well as the Area Development Office in protest of the results of the primaries conducted in Toro LGA of the state. The police arrested 30 of the people who were suspected to have participated in the arson.

Robbers Attack Nigerian Embassy Staff In S/Africa

A staff member of the Nigerian High Commission in Pretoria, South Africa, Mrs. Modupe Rotimi is now in a critical condition at a Pretoria hospital after an attack by suspected armed robbers.  She was allegedly attacked by robbers suspected to have followed her from the airport, where she had gone to pick a family friend in Johannesburg.

Nigeria’s crude oil supply to the international market may be threatened by about 860,000 barrels per day as the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association Mobil Oil Producing branch is set to commence an indefinite strike over what it called management insensitivity to the plight of its members.

Nigeria, China Seal $50b Oil-For-Projects Deal

China has unfolded plans to commit between $40bn and $50bn in investment in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector, Finance Minister, Shamsudeen Usman, announced. China's export credit guarantee agency, Sinosure, has offered $40 billion-$50 billion to help fund infrastructure projects in Nigeria over the next three years.

Militants: FG Strengthens Joint Military Task Force

President Yar’Adua has directed that the Joint Task Force currently helping in the security of the Niger Delta region be strengthened with a view to repositioning it to meet the growing security demands of the region. China May Recall Zimbabwe-Bound Weapons Ship

A ship carrying weapons to Zimbabwe may return to China after being prevented from unloading in South Africa, a Chinese official has said.  Zambia's president has called on other African countries not to let the ship enter their waters, in case the arms escalate post-election tensions.  Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Jiang Yu, said the weapons were ordered last year and were "perfectly normal".

ICPC Detains Director, Accountant Over N155m Fraud

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) Tuesday detained the Medical Director of the Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Kaduna, Dr. G.T. Suleiman, and the Acting Head of Account, Mr. Lucky Abumere, over alleged fraud of about N155, 199, 889. The suspects are also in detention for allegedly including deceased, retired and ghost workers on the payroll.

Fuel Scarcity Will Persist – PPMC

There may be no end in sight to long petrol queues nationwide, the Petroleum Product Marketing Company (PPMC) boss, Mr. Stanley Reginald has indicated. He said that building new refineries and providing adequate security on the nation's pipelines are critical to making the products readily available. He explained that the challenges of fuel scarcity would live with the country for some time, a position which contradicts government's view that the end to scarcity is near and that government will not hike fuel prices.

Court Drops Treason Charges Against Al-Mustapha, Others

Charges of treason against Major Hamza Al Mustapha, Chief Security Officer (CSO) of Late Military dictator, Sanni Abacha and three others have been dismissed by a Lagos High Court. But the former CSO remains in detention on murder charges. Al-Mustapha had been held in custody since 1999 for a number of crimes committed between 1993 and 1998 when Abacha was in power.

Conduct Bureau Sentences 8 Police Officers

The Code of Conduct Tribunal on Tuesday sentenced eight senior police officers to a fine of N10,000 each or they be removed from office for a period of one year for failing to declare their assets within stipulated period in line with the Code of Conduct Bureau and Tribunal Act.

Nigeria has been advised against unguarded spending of its rising oil revenue and foreign reserves. Gunmen Attach Bonny Police Station

Unidentified gunmen, Sunday, laid siege on the Bonny police station and killed 5 policemen. It is believed that the police was holding a member of their group at the station and the others had gone on a rescue mission. The gunmen also made away with five police rifles and two pistols. Details remain sketchy.

Shell Declares Force Majeure As Militants Hit Pipelines Again

Shell has declared force majeure for April and May operations at the Bonny terminal. This follows the recent militant attacks on its facilities at Isaka and Abonema, both in Rivers State. The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) claims responsibility for the destructions. MEND threatens to destroy all oil facilities in their region until their demands for “equity” were met.

ABC MD’s Wife Kidnapped

Unidentified persons, penultimate Sunday, kidnapped Mrs. Ngozi Nneji, wife of the Associated Bus Company Plc (ABC) Managing Director, Frank Nneji, at Owerri. The kidnappers are demanding a ransom of N500 million.

Four Arrested Over Kidnap of 75-Year-Old Woman

Four suspected kidnappers have been arrested in respect of the disappearance of 75 years old, Mrs. Sarah Nwakudu in Ama-Awan, Ikwuano Local Government in Abia state. The suspects who are students of Federal Polytechnic Nekede, confessed to the kidnapping when questioned.

Wife of Oil Magnate, Idisi, Abducted in Rivers

Heavily armed men in the early hours of Sunday raided the Rumukurushi residence of the Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of Lonestar Group Nigeria Limited, Chief Humphrey Idisi and abducted his 56-year-old wife, Mrs. Margaret Idisi.  The abductors have demanded N1bn as ransom.

Rivers: Fire Guts 2 Bunkering Boats

Two boats used for illegal bunkering caught fire on Sunday in Port-Harcourt.Emergency rescue efforts by residents of Nembe waterfront prevented what could have resulted in a major fire disaster. The fire broke out from one of the illegal bunkering boats loaded with petrol due to a mechanical fault in the boat’s engine. No casualty was recorded.

Imo Police Arrest Over 100 Armed Robbers

About 100 armed robbery suspects and other criminals have been nabbed by the Imo state police command since January 2008. More than 40 arms and 50 vehicles have also been recovered from them during the period.

Police Dangles N.3m Cash Reward For Information

The Commissioner of Police in Imo, Mr Donald Iroham has offered N300, 000 reward for information leading to the arrest of armed robbers in the state. According to him, anybody willing to give information can contact the Commissioner of Police, his deputy or assistant in charge of operations or call 08081469310. He gave an assurance that the identity of the informer would not be disclosed.

32 Cultists Denounce Membership

About 32 members of various cult groups renounced their memberships in Uyo, Wednesday. This is coming on the heels of the intervention of the Peace on Campus Initiative by the Oron Youth Movement to stamp out cultism in Oron. The National Coordinator of the initiative, Comrade Oliver Cromwell, said cultism in Oron has reached an alarming State where about 85 percent of the youths actively involved.

Police Foil Driver’s Bid To Kidnap Boss’s Kids

Police in Port Harcourt, Rivers State on Wednesday foiled an attempt to kidnap three children of the same parents by their driver. The kids are children of Mr Morenikeji Aderibigbe, a retired Operations Manager of Agip, Port Harcourt. The driver had planned with a gang to waylay him while taking the children to school. He wanted the gang to kidnap them for ransom. A member of the group incidentally was a police informant who told the police of the plan.

JTF Still In Bayelsa

The commanding officer of the Joint Military Task Force (JTF) in Bayelsa State, Lt. Col Chris Musa has denied insinuations in certain quarters that the security outfit had been withdrawn from Bayelsa State. The sudden disappearance of men of the JTF had prompted speculations within Yenagoa, the state capital that they might have been withdrawn following an incident in which an indigene, who refused to part with N500 for a truck load of sand, lost one of his legs after a soldier allegedly gave him multiple shots from his gun.

FUTO Student Killed, Others Protest

There was massive protest after a student of the federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO) killed by suspected armed robbers. A team of mobile policemen from Owerri was drafted to stop the riot from spreading to other neighbouring communities, which host the university. The Commissioner of Police pleaded with the students to be calm, while government wades into their case.

Youth Group Drag FG To Court Over With-held NDDC Funds

A Niger Delta pressure group has dragged the FG to court for allegedly withholding over N274 billion belonging to the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC). The plaintiff, the Niger Delta Youth Movement (NDYM), is seeking an order compelling the government to release the money to the NNDC.

Bakassi Natives Want N456bn Compensation

Some natives of the Bakassi peninsula are demanding N456 billion as compensation from the federal government for the compulsory ceding of their ancestral homes and land to Cameroon in an unconstitutional manner and the infringement of their rights to dignity, to acquire and own immovable property and right to self-determination. They have instituted a suit at a Federal High Court in Abuja.

DWSC Recovers Weapons Seized From JTF

Delta   Waterways Security Committee (DWSC), has recovered the weapons seized from men of the Joint Task Force (JTF) on the Niger-Delta, by militants in last Wednesday's gun battle at Olero Creek in Delta State.  The weapons have been surrendered to it for onward transmission to the JTF. Men of the JTF have besieged Opuama community on Thursday following reports that the kingpins of the group, identified as Deadly Underdogs were from that axis.

NDLEA Arrests 37 Persons For Drug Peddling

National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested 37 persons in Delta State for drug peddling. It Commandant in the state, Mr Suleman Ningi, told newsmen in Ogwashi-Uku, that the arrests were made between January and this month. Five had been convicted and sentenced to various terms of imprisonment, while 32 were remanded in prison custody.

Task Force Nabs 2 Female Teenagers For Scooping Fuel

Two female teenagers have been nabbed by men of the task force on pipeline vandalisation at Mosogar, for scooping petroleum products.The two girls were arrested with 20 litres jerry cans numbering 15 with petroleum products from a burst pipeline at Mosogar.

Violence In Lagos, 60 Vehicles Vandalised

No fewer than 20 people were injured and properties worth millions of naira destroyed around Bariga Market and Emmanuel Street in Lagos State on Thursday following clashes among two factions of the ‘area boys’ over allegation of false accusation against one another on the theft of N80, 000 belonging to a resident in the area. The police was quick to respond to the crisis.

The Lagos Police Command is to establish a Special Marine Anti-Robbery Squad (SMARS) to combat crime, especially in the inland and waterways.

Robbers Conceal Guns In Shoe Heels

Police detectives in Lagos, recently discovered two local guns and bullets nearly concealed in shoe heels of suspected robbers. This was discovered during a raid of their home in Lagos. The other gang member in an attempt to free the arrested robbers engaged the policemen in a shootout which led to the killing of two of the suspects. The others escaped but several arms were recovered.

Man Gets N15, 000 Weekly For Keeping Arms For Robbers

Donald Ejimahon, 27, has been arrested for keeping arms for robbers, who paid him N15, 000 weekly. His arrest followed the arrest of a robbery suspect in Lagos after a shoot out with the police. The injured robber told the police the source of their arms and their armourer before he died. Donald fronts as an electronic dealer.

Policeman Kills Two Robbery Suspects, Recovers Arms

A police inspector in Lagos state, Saturday, killed two robbery suspects and recovered assorted arms and ammunition from a gang of robbers, following a distress call. The inspector was said to have laid an ambush for the robbers and opened fire on them. There was an exchange of gunfire after which two of the robbery suspects were killed and one seriously injured. Others reportedly fled after three of their colleagues were felled.

Businessman Assassinated

Police detectives in Lagos are working round the clock to unravel the circumstances surrounding the killing of a Lagos businessman, Oyeyipo Mayowa, who was killed recently. The gunmen reportedly trailed the deceased to the Transformer Junction, Ilasamaja area of the State, where they shot him and sped off while the sum of N3, 900.000 that was in his car boot was intact.

Trans-Border Robbers In Police Net

Two Trans Boarder armed robbery suspects are now in the custody of the Lagos State police while several arms and ammunition were also recovered from them. The suspects, on sighting the police vehicle opened fire on the patrol team who engaged them in a shootout, but were overpowered by the police.

717 Bodies Found On Lagos Road In One Year

A total of 717 corpses were picked up on Lagos streets in the last one year, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Jide Idris, has said. Over 90 per cent of the corpses picked from highways and other public places were victims of road accidents, destitution and disasters. The commissioner said that the monitoring unit had received 535 telephone calls, this year, from various areas to evacuate corpses.

A staff of Nigerian Bottling Company Lagos was shot dead while driving in the company truck in Isolo area of the state.
