Nigeria Moves To Sign New BASA With UK

Officials of Nigeria and the United Kingdom are finally on the verge of signing a new Bilateral Air Service Agreement (BASA), which the both sides said would strengthen airline commercial services between both countries. Stakeholders in the Nigerian aviation industry had, criticised the existing BASA, which they said, was in favour of the UK and could jeopardise the country’s economic being.

Willbros Completes 421-mile Gas Pipeline System

Willbros West Africa Inc has completed a 421-mile offshore pipeline from Nigeria to Ghana. The pipeline stretches from the Lagos Beach Compressor Station (LBCS) near Badagry, Lagos, to Takoradi in Ghana. The West African Gas Pipeline (WAGP) system, which measures 678 km (about 421 miles) in length, is expected to gather natural gas from Escravos for delivery to Ghana, Togo and Benin.

US Military Deaths In Iraq Hit 4,000

The death toll of United States (US) forces in Iraq has hit 4,000 with the killing of four soldiers in a Baghdad bombing, according to reports. The four soldiers were killed when a roadside bomb hit their vehicle while on patrol in southern Baghdad on Sunday. ECOWAS Defence Chiefs Endorse Stand by Force

The just-concluded 21st meeting of the ECOWAS Committee of Chiefs of Defence Staff has endorsed the ECOWAS Standby Force (ESF). Nigerian Army Moves Logistics Headquarters From Benin

The headquarters of the Nigerian Army Corps of Supplies, Transport and School (NACST) was, on Thursday, formally moved from Benin City to Lagos. Its commandant, Maj. Gen. Policemen Grumble Over Salary Deductions

Men of the Nigerian Police are currently grumbling about perceived illegal deductions from their salaries.  Attempt to get details about the rationale for the cut met stiff resistance from officials of the Mechanized Salary Structure (MSS). Some of the deductions are likely contributions to the Police Cooperative Society, Police Insurance Funds and Police Contributory Pension Scheme among others. However, it is not clear why these deductions are not spelt out for those affected.

12 Persons Killed In Auto Crash In Zamfara

No fewer than 12 persons died while two others sustained serious injuries in an auto-accident on the Gusau-Sokoto road on Monday. Shops were razed resulting in loss of property worth millions of naira when fire, for the second time in two years, gutted the old Sokoto market. The state Fire Prevention Officer, Mallam Bala Dandare, said the inferno started at about 9:30 am and it took his men about three hours to control it.

Kano Court Convicts 13 Persons For Staging Drama

For staging a show without authorisation, a Kano State Magistrate's Court, Tuesday, handed down a two-month imprisonment sentence to each of the 13 persons arraigned before it. They were accused of publicly engaging in indecent stage show performance with intent to corrupt public moral contrary to Section 97 (D) of the Kano State Censorship Law 2001. Violation of which is punishable.

Reps To Enact New Law On Child Protection

The House Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development disclosed on Tuesday that a bill would be tabled for the establishment of a Child Protection and Enforcement Service Act and agency. The committee also plans to convene a summit to brainstorm on emergent issues in order to enact laws acceptable to all states of the federation.

Senate to Commence Constitution Review Next Month

The Senate has stated its readiness to review the 1999 constitution by setting up a review committee at the senate. The Deputy Senate President, Chief Ike Ekweremadu, said the committee would be inaugurated in April.

Minister Faults Judgment Over Army's Invasion Of Zaki Biam

The Attorney General of the Federation, Mr. Michael Aondoakaa, has said that he cannot advise the FG to pay the sum of N41.8 billion judgment debt obtained by the Benue Development Movement (BDM), over the 2001 Army invasion of Zaki Biam, as he claimed that the judgement was obtained on a faulty background. Reps Reopen Probe of PTDF’s Missing $4.4bn

The House of Representatives Committee on Public Accounts has initiated moves to locate a whopping $4.4bn belonging to the Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF). The amount is what the agency earned as signature bonus in 2004, 2005 and 2006 bid rounds for oil blocks, which was not paid to it, contrary to the Act that established it, and undisclosed revenue from ‘other sources.’

Navy In Trouble Over Disappearance Of Two Barges

Naval Authorities may be heading for trouble over the disappearance of two barges that were held at the NNS Pathfinder’s Jetty in Rivers State. The barges, Soljas Lagoon I and II, were owned by Soljas Limited, a Port Harcourt-based company. The court, in 2006, had ordered the navy to immediately release the barges. The Navy denies any complicity in the disappearance of the barges, saying that one of them sank because of lack of maintenance.

Robbers Kill Eight In Owerri Banks Robbery

About eight persons were killed by armed robbers who stormed two banks in Owerri, Imo State. The robbers were all kitted in army camouflage. The police with its Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) was reportedly overpowered. The robbers had a field day on the two banks and made away with unspecified amount of money.

Navy Refutes MEND's Claim On Explosion

The Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Abdul Adekeye, has debunked a claim by the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) that it (MEND) was responsible for an explosion at the NNS Pathfinder, Port Harcourt. He said the explosion was an accident that was occasioned by much pressure on their system.

Gunmen Kidnap Bayelsa Deputy Speaker's Son

Gunmen, on Thursday, kidnapped the 22-year-old son of the House of Assembly's Deputy Speaker, Binadomene Binabo from his hostel at the Niger Delta University, Amassoma. There was no resistance as other students were frightened by sound of gunshots. The Police Public Relations Officer, Iniobong Ibokette, confirmed this.

Frontier Oils, an Indigenous oil company operating in the Uqua Marginal Oil fields in Esit Eket, Akwa Ibom, has concluded plans to commence drilling. This followed a successful seismic survey of the oil field.

Govt To Reduce Military Presence In Niger Delta

The Federal Government has hinted of moves to scale down the high military presence in the Niger Delta. But the ongoing dialogue with interest groups in the region would be intensified. The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Baba Gana Kingibe said that the decision to cut down on the heavy military presence in the area was informed by the gradual return of peace to the region.

Protesters Storm RSIEC Office

About 500 protesters stormed the premises of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), Sunday, to complain over Saturday’s local government council elections in the state. Samuel Woka the Director of Publicity for RSIEC maintained that the commission would take necessary action on their complaints after verification, noting that there are some LGAs where voters were disenfranchised. There were no recorded reports of violence at the polls.

No aircraft missing -Senate leader

The Cross River State government has said that it has given up hope of finding the  Beechcraft 1900D owned by Wings Aviation, which was declared missing with three crew members on March 15. It said the aircraft was not anywhere within the geographical jurisdiction of the state. Following some clues, the search for the missing Beachcraft 1900D aircraft was been extended to the Republic of Cameroon. But a Senate leader, Teslim Folarin, dismissed the claim of an aircraft missing, saying someone is merely holding the nation to ransom, insisting that he had classified information to back up his claim

Onitsha Traders Resist Evacuation Orders

Traders are adamant not to leave the bridge-head market in Onitsha, Anambra State, insisting on staying put until the state government finds an alternative permanent and convenient abode to relocate them. They also contend that they are legitimate tenants of the FG and cannot be evacuated by the state. This was corroborated by the Federal Ministry of works, which had issued a warning to the state to steer clear of the land. This has led to violent clashes and loss of lives.

Navy Confirms Losing Officers In Gun Boats' Explosion

Nigerian Navy has confirmed the death of some of its men in the explosion that rocked five of its gun boats recently at the NNS Pathfinder. Court Orders Anambra To Hold Council Polls

An Onitsha High Court headed has granted leave to Mr. Peter Okala to apply for prerogative orders of mandamus to compel Governor Peter Obi of Anambra State to organise the council elections without further delay. In suit No. 0/360M/2007, Okala had sued Obi, the state Independent Electoral Commission and the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice and sought for and obtained four reliefs.

JTF Kills 4 Militants

Four suspected militants were on Monday killed and one arrested by the Joint Task Force (JTF) in Rivers state when they engaged themselves in a gun duel around the Dawes Island as the JTF intended to recover a seized barge loaded with suspected stolen crude oil. The two speed boats that the militants used were destroyed.

Group Sues FG over Withheld N224bn NDDC Fund

A group known as Niger Delta People’s Conscience has dragged the President, the Accountant-General of the Federation and five others to court over the withheld N224 billion due the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).  The group filed an originating summons against the President to determine whether the N224 billion under Section 14 (2)a) of the NNDC Act 2000 can be said to have expired when such monies were never released in the first place.

Mother, Baby Abducted In Rivers

A woman and her three-month-old baby were kidnapped from their Port Harcourt, Rivers State home on Tuesday.  The woman, whose husband, Samuel Ejiogu, is a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) councillorship candidate in Etche LGA and her child were taken to an unknown place. The kidnappers had demanded a N20 million ransom but have reduced it to N5 million.

Two Retired Police Officers Commit Suicide

Two retired police officers have committed suicide due to hardship caused by lack of payment of their gratuity and arrears of pension. The Cross River Chapter of the Association of Unpaid Retired Police Officers has disclosed. The Chairman of the Association Mr. Edet Ikang and its secretary, Chief C.E Bassey, called for quick intervention by the Presidency, alleging plot by the National Pension Commission to put them in misery.

Bayelsa Needs $10b To Develop Infrastructure, Says Commissioner

The Bayelsa State government says it will require over $10 billion to provide infrastructure that will make the state an investment hub in the West Africa sub-region. The state government has also initiated the Private Public Partnership scheme to help fund the project. Under the scheme, he explained, private investors are expected to invest as much as N100 billion, at the first instance.

Robbers Raid Bullion Van, Bank, Cart Away N50m

After what appeared to be a lull in the incidence of bank robberies, dare-devil armed men on Wednesday attacked a bullion van belonging to a bank on Aba Road, Port Harcourt and carted away more than N50 million. Eyewitnesses explained that the well armed eight-man gang attacked the bullion van close to Garrison Junction Port Harcourt.

Court Orders PENGASSAN, Mobil to Stay Action On Planned Strike

The National Industrial Court (NIC), Abuja Judicial Division, has ordered stay of action on the proposed industrial action by workers of Mobil Oil Nigeria Plc under the aegis of Petroleum and Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN). Following a trade dispute between the workers and the oil firm, the workers had initiated a proceeding at the industrial court.

Niger Delta Safer, With Less Friction, Says Navy

The Nigerian Navy has assured operators in the oil industry of their safety, as it has increased the presence and efficiency of its men on the eastern flank of the country's territorial waters. Flag Officer Commanding (FOC), Eastern Naval Command, Rear Admiral Bodunrin Raji, said the Navy has also achieved reduction of friction between host communities and oil companies.

N’Delta: JTF Deploys 15 Gunboats

The Joint Task Force in the Niger Delta has deployed 15 gunboats on the waterways and creeks of the Niger Delta. The security agency took the action to keep the criminals at bay along the waterways and creeks of the region. The JTF, in collaboration with the NNS Delta, Warri Naval Base, had also provided escorts for the oil multinationals operating in the region to facilitate their re-entry into their abandoned platforms and ensure unhindered oil exploration in the region.

PDP Chief, Others Arrested After Delta Riots

Riot policemen and troops of the Joint Task Force were on Tuesday deployed in Orerokpe in Delta State, following Monday’s mayhem in the community. Five suspects were arrested. No fewer than 15 buildings were razed in the bloody face-off, while the chairman of the community’s vigilante group, Mr. Francis Atima was killed.  His deputy and two others were critically injured.

Easter: Nine Die In Boat Mishap

About nine persons, mostly students, were feared drowned at Igbo-Egunnun in the Ilaje LGA of Ondo State, Sunday, while returning from an Easter retreat. The 15-passenger boat conveying them unexpectedly capsized, apparently on account of the massive water hyacinth that had taken over the surface of the river.

Ondo Spends N23bn on Roads in Oil Producing Areas

The Ondo State Government, Monday, said it has spent more than N23bn on the construction of 105 km of roads in the oil producing areas of the state.  Contracts for the roads were awarded in the last four and a half years by the Ondo State Oil Producing Area Development Commission (OSOPADEC).

Police Arrest Two Over Murder Of Ex- Perm Sec

Two persons have been arrested by men of Oyo State Police Command in connection with the recent assassination of a retired permanent secretary in the state civil service, Mr. Ademola Oyadeyi. The two suspects were arrested in the vicinity of the deceased filling station at Alegongo-Akobo area of Ibadan.

Collapsed Fence Kills 2 Pupils

The Oyo State Police command, on Wednesday, admitted that it was wrong when it put the casualty figure of pupils that died on Tuesday from a collapsed fence at the Living Water Nursery and Primary School in Ibadan, at 13, instead of two.  Several others, including teachers sustained injuries. Meanwhile the State government has vowed to shut illegal and substandard schools in the state.

NDLEA Arrests Ex-Councillors, Others For Alleged Drug Trafficking

Attempts by an ex-councillor, Eta James Omojuwa, to raise money from illicit drug trafficking have met a brickwall as he was arrested on Monday by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos. Two other suspects were arrested.

Three alfas, who the police said were among those responsible for the incidences of kidnapping and killings of innocent people in the Lagos metropolis for rituals, are now in the police net. Robbers Raid Bank In Ondo, Kill Cop

A fifteen-man gang of armed robbers on Tuesday attacked a commercial bank in Akungba-Akoko, Ondo State escaping with an undisclosed amount of money. Police image maker, Adeniran Aremu, who confirmed the incident, said that the robbers killed a police man at Isua town at a check point when the bandits ran into them.

37 Inmates Of Ikoyi Prisons Regain Freedom

Thirty-seven inmates of the Ikoyi Prisons in Lagos on Wednesday regained their freedom during the visit of the Lagos State Chief Judge, Justice Adetula Alabi. The chief judge said those released were freed because they had stayed in prison longer than the maximum jail terms prescribed for the offences they allegedly committed if they had been tried. The prison with a capacity for 800, holds 1,805 inmates, out of which only 84 are convicts.

Man, 35, Smashes Pregnant Wife‘s Head

A middle-aged man, Sunday Abbah, has killed his wife, Comfort, who was six months old pregnant, with a huge stone. The suspect, who is now in the net of the Ogun State Police Command, said that he did not know what moved him to commit the crime as there was no rancour or disagreement between himself and his wife.
