Human Rights: Okah Drags Nigeria, Angola Before African Commission

Embattled leaders of the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND), Henry Okah and Edward Atatah, on Thursday dragged the governments of Nigeria and Angola before the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights over alleged violation of their rights. They called on the Commission to compel both countries to either try or release them. They also urged the Commission to call on the concerned governments to compensate them with  the sum of $10m.

IG Parades 35 Policemen Arrested For Corruption

The Inspector-General of Police, Mr Mike Okiro, Monday, in Abuja paraded 35 policemen who were allegedly arrested for corrupt practices. The policemen were arrested at various locations across the country by a special squad set up to fight corruption in the force.

Shell Recovers 170,000 Bpd From Production Shut-In

Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) has reaped from the prevailing peace in the creeks of Delta State as 170 000 barrels of crude oil per day have been recovered from the production shut-in in its western operations in the Niger Delta region. The company had recovered 115,000 bpd in January.

Contaminated Drinks: NAFDAC Vows To Close Down Erring Firms

Any bottling company that fails to install an electronic sighting machine to check contaminants in bottled drinks will be closed down. The Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, Prof. Dora Akunyili, had ordered bottling companies to acquire the machines in public interest or risk being shut down. There has been public outcry over continued contamination of bottled drinks.

Terrorism: Police to Deploy Squad in FCT, Three States

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has confirmed its readiness to deploy its newly created Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), to volatile areas of the country. The pilot squad made up of 308 police personnel will be deployed in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Rivers, Lagos and Kano States. The scheme is designed to create a safer and more secured environment.

EFCC, ICPC: We’ve Recovered N600bn Loot

Over N600 billion of stolen public funds have been recovered by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), since they were established by former President Obasanjo. The anti-graft bodies disclosed this recently, saying that they were planning joint action to recover more looted funds.

Nigeria to Earn N795bn from Crude Oil in April

Soaring global oil prices will bring into the Nigerian treasury a whooping N795.2 billion in April.  The amount is derived from the $109 per barrel a day buyers have offered for the country's Bonny Light contracts for next month. Official data showed that contracts for the first week of April settled for $109 per barrel. This is the highest offer for the country's crude since last year when the price of oil rose above $100 per barrel.

Katsina Gets New Emir

Alhaji Abdulmumini Kabir Usman, the first son of the late Emir, Alhaji Muhammadu Kabir Usman, who died last Saturday, has been announced as the new Emir for the Katsina state emirate council. By  his selection,he has become the 12th Emir in the Fulani clan that began with the 1804 jihad, as well as the 50th king of the ancient Katsina  Kingdom.

Reps Track $13bn Energy Funds

About $12.92bn out of the $16bn allegedly spent on the power sector by the ex-president Obasanjo’s administration has been tracked by the House of Representatives Committee on Power and Steel. President Yar’Adua and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Dimeji Bankole, are among top government officials expected to testify the hearing.

Govt Plans New Deadline To End Gas Flaring

President Yar'Adua has raised the possibility of the FG setting a new deadline for oil companies in the country to stop gas flaring. An earlier deadline had expired on January 31, this year without compliance.

Attempted Murder: Bamaiyi Seeks Court Acquittal

Former Chief of Army Staff, Ishaya Bamaiyi has urged the Ikeja High Court, Lagos to aquit him of an alleged attempted murder of Guardian Publisher, Mr. Alex Ibru, saying that the prosecution had failed to prove that he was involved in the alleged crime.

Nipco Procures 15 Gas Tankers

Nipco Plc has been commended for procuring 15 Gas tankers. The minister of state for Energy (Gas), Emmanuel Odusina, commended the effort of the Management of Nipco plc in putting up a gas plant in a conscious move to reduce scarcity of the product.

Refineries Can Meet 45% of Local Demand – Ajumogobia

The Minister of State for Energy (Petroleum), Mr. Odein Ajumogobia (SAN) has disclosed that the three refineries in the country could not produce more than 45 per cent of domestic consumption even at the height of their capacity and that the country must import 55 per cent to augment local effort.

Man In Court For Biting Policeman

A 24-year-old man, Tayo Olatunji, appeared in Court for allegedly biting a police officer. Olatunji was also charged for constituting a public nuisance and resisting arrest. According to the police report, he was arrested for wandering. The accused, who pleaded not guilty to the charge, said that he resisted the arrest because the policemen, in mufti, did not identify themselves when they wanted to arrest him.

Mother Kills Own 1-Year-Old Child

A woman in Kano state allegedly stabbed to death her 13 months old child, before attempting to take her own life, before she was overpowered and taken to the hospital. She is yet to give the reason for her behaviour.

Woman Gives Birth to Half Baby, Half Animal

A woman in Benue state, Mrs. Mercy Alicho, married to a hunter, recently gave birth to a half human, half animal baby. The couple already had three normal children. The monster child was buried alive in a forest. Medical doctors are unsure of what could have caused the foetus to result in a monster.

Gunmen Attack Ajimobi’s Wife, Abduct Ladoja’s Aide

Gunmen recently attacked the wife of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) governorship candidate in Oyo State in last April election, Mrs. Florence Ajimobi, while Mr. Kayode Layiwola, a supporter of a former governor of the state, Rashidi Ladoja, was kidnapped at gun point in the premises of the state high court.

Strike Looms as NUPENG, IPMAN Clash Over Welfare

Motorists in the country may soon face scarcity of petroleum products, if the threat by the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers of Nigeria (NUPENG) to commence an industrial action is effected.  A letter by NUPENG indicates that the action became necessary to force the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association (IPMAN), to spell out conditions of service for its employees, who are Independent Marketers Branch members of NUPENG.

NNPC Starts Work On Damaged Pipeline, Petrol 'Lake' At Arepo

Rehabilitation work has started on the damaged NNPC Petroleum pipeline at the Journalists' Estate, Arepo, Ogun State, near Lagos. The pipeline was burst penultimate Friday. The cause of the damage has not been ascertained, but some people attributed it to old age.

Nigeria Plans To Refine Crude Oil Abroad

Nigeria is set to refine its crude oil abroad. The Federal Government is focusing on offshore refineries in Eastern Europe. Through the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), the government has begun talks on how it can secure partnership with the refineries to boost downstream investment profile.

Fuel Crisis Looms

Some Independent Petroleum marketing companies have decried the decision of the Nigerian Port Authority (NPA) to suspend them from discharging products at certain terminals and depots. They claim that suspension had disrupted the flow of petroleum products supplies across the country with grave dangers of fuel scarcity and imminent loss of jobs to hundreds of Nigerians.

NNPC Imports Heavy Crude For Kaduna Refinery

The country is to start importing heavy crude from Venezuela to run the petroleum unit of its Kaduna Refinery and Petrochemical Company Refinery (KPRC), the NNPC Managing Director, Abubakar YarAdua, has said.

Govt Orders Release Of 148 Vessels Linked With Oil Theft

The FG has directed the Nigerian Navy to release immediately, all the 148 vessels, arrested or detained, and under its custody. The vessels were seized within the country's territory waters from April 2003 to date. The Navy has asked the owners of the ships to contact Naval Headquarters, Abuja, within two weeks "with proof of authentic ownership" for eventual release.

FCT Begins Sale Of 102 Houses

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has opened the sale of 102 units of the low-income houses located at Karshi, a satellite town in the FCT, with a warning against favouritism in the balloting and allocation to subscribers.

The government of Japan plans to have an incremental programme of assistance to Nigeria, even as total grants from the Asian giant to the country since 1960 have hit the N370 billion mark. The police during an inspection of a truck that was headed  for  Abuja from a northern state  discovered 105 children that were packed like  items  meant for the market in the truck. Robbers/Police Gun Duel Claims 7 in Lagos

On Thursday, three armed robbers who attempted to rob a bank in Lagos were gunned down by the police while two others were arrested. One of the arrested robbers claimed he was a victim of the gang and had scampered for safety and police thought he was one of the gang members. Asked why he went and hid himself in an empty tank, he claimed that he was transported there by a spirit.

Man Feared Dead as Switzerland Deports 24 Nigerians

W’African Judges Tasked on Economic Crimes

Judges from the English-speaking West African countries have been advised to unite in the fight against money laundering and all forms of economic crimes in the sub-region. Chief Justice of Nigeria, Idris Kutigi, gave this advice at the opening of a three-day workshop for the judges, saying only a united effort can stop the laundering of illegally acquired money in the sub-region.

Conoil, Total Sign Agreement on Deepwater Oil Block

Nigeria's indigenous crude oil producer, Conoil have signed an agreement with Total for the latter to farm into Conoil's offshore oil block OPL 257 with a 40 percent interest. By this agreement, Total assumes the position of the technical advisor, while Conoil would remain the operator of the block with a 50 percent interest. The remaining 10 percent is reserved for a local content vehicle.

FG Increases Crude Oil Supply To Ghana

Government has increased the volume of Nigeria’s crude oil supply to Ghana from 40,000 to 60,000 barrels per day. It also extended the credit line to Ghana from one to two months to pay for crude oil supplies. The concession was the outcome of a meeting President Yar’Adua with President of Ghana, John Kuffour, where Nigeria also offered to assist Ghana explore her crude oil.

MPN/NNPC Boss Commends FG On Security

The General Manager, Joint Venture Operations, Mobil Producing Nigeria and Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation, (MPN/NNPC), Allan Short has commended the FG for putting in place effective security operations in the country. Allan said the various security measures by government have rekindled confidence in government’s ability to protect lives and property at all times.

Policeman Sacked For Robbery

The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has dismissed a police constable for his alleged involvement in an armed robbery in which the victim was killed.
The victim, who was on his way to his office, had cashed N5 million from a bank located at Wuse 2, Abuja in January this year.

The South African police and customs have denied the allegation that robbers connive with them to attack passengers at Tambo international airport. The police said there was no evidence of crime syndicates operating at the airport.

Bridging Claims: PEF Pays Marketers N1.9bn

5 Policemen, 2 Others Killed In Armed Robbery Attack

At least seven persons, five of them policemen, were killed when dare devil armed robbers stormed the Enugu end of the Onitsha Enugu Expressway and attacked a bullion van, conveying money to a yet to be identified location. The incident which took place at about 11am caused panic along the highway as passers by and road users scampered into the bush for safety.

Three Illegal Bunkering Vessels Destroyed In Gas Explosion In Rivers

Three vessels used for illegal bunkering activities were on Friday consumed in an explosion that occurred in Degema LGA of Rivers State. It was not clear how the fire started or the number of casualties it claimed.

Six Arraigned For Murder Of US-Based Bishop

Six persons were on Monday arraigned for allegedly killing Bishop Ogbonnaya Onye-wububu, an Anglican Bishop based in the United States. The accused persons allegedly shot and killed the Bishop while robbing him of N20,000 cash and a Nokia handset. The robbery took place in Umuahia.

Shell Denies Intimidating Ogonis

Shell has denied enlisting the Joint Task Force to intimidate Ogoni indigenes into allowing them to go back to their oil facilities in Ogoniland, saying that it was directed by Rivers State government to re-activate its facilities there. This was in reaction to allegations by Movement for the Survival of Ogoni People (MOSOP), that SPDC recruited thugs and the JTF, to intimidate them into allowing a return to the wells it abandoned 15 years ago.

Gunmen Kill Lebanese

Unknown gunmen on Tuesday stormed the house of a Lebanese, Ibrahim Katler, Port Harcourt and killed him. He was reportedly shot in the head on a day heavy shooting was reported along Okrika Jetty. The police also rescued two children in two separate kidnap attempts. The case of the slain Lebanese was confirmed as armed robbery by the Police.

Oil spill: Mobil Allays A’Ibom Communities’ Fears

Host communities to Mobil Producing Nigeria (MPN) and the entire Akwa Ibom State have been assured of safety as the recent sheen sighted on one of MPN’s pipelines has been declared as “no spill” by the company, with no impact on aquatic life”. Court Acquits Mbadinuju Over Murder of Igwe Couple

A High Court in Onitsha, has dismissed murder charges against a former governor of the state, Dr. Chinwoke Mbadinuju, because of a lack of evidence to prove that he hired hitmen to kill an opponent. Mbadinuju was charged with the 2002 murder of prominent lawyer, Barnabas Igwe and his wife, Abigail. Igwe was a critic of Mbadinuju's government.

Rivers NDLEA Arrests 111 in Four Months

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) arrested 111 suspects on drug-related offences in Rivers State between October last year and January this year. Forty-six have been convicted and are serving various jail terms.

We Won’t Negotiate With Militants – Amaechi

The Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, has reiterated his pledge that his administration would not enter into dialogue with armed groups. Amaechi was reacting to threats by the leader of the Niger Delta Vigilante Movement, Ateke Tom, that he would not surrender arms. Amaechi said that despite his claims for peace, Tom through his actions and utterances did not genuinely seek peace.

Six-Year Old Girl Kidnapped In Port Harcourt

A six-year old girl was abducted, Monday, in Port Harcourt, when unknown men stopped the car in which the girl was being taken to school. They dragged her out, put her in their car and sped off.

JTF Uncovers Ateke's Arms Dump

The Joint Task Force (JTF) in the Niger Delta has discovered a huge cache of arms and ammunition from the dump of Ateke Tom, leader of the Niger Delta Vigilante Movement and uncovered an illegal pipeline from the Okrika refinery to one of his homes at Okochiri. The weapons are one General Purpose Machine Gun (GPMG), magazines and assorted rifles. The JTF uncovered another illegal pipeline in Eleme. Four persons were arrested in connection with the pipeline.

Four Dockworkers Crushed To Death At Apapa Port Complex

Four dockworkers were on Friday crushed to death at ENL terminals, Apapa  port   by a  faulty crane. The victims were discharging fish from a vessel when the accident occurred. The dockworkers of the ENL Consortium went on the rampage and attacked an ambulance, ENL officers and properties worth millions of naira.

Obasanjo’s School Shut Over Four-Year-Old Pupil’s Death

A school owned by former President Obasanjo, The Bells Nursery and Primary School in Ota, Ogun State, has been shut over the death of a pupil in the school. Four-year-old Ayotunde Williams was killed on Tuesday by the school bus, which had dropped him off at home. Ayotunde had run back to get his lunch pack, which he had forgotten in the bus when he was crushed by the coaster bus.

Man Kills Sister, Flees

Men of the Lagos State Police Command are hunting for a middle-aged man who allegedly killed his sister in Lagos on Sunday. The suspect, Emeka Sunday, was said to have taken to his heels immediately he discovered that his sister died, after he allegedly hit her with a hard object.

Man Bags 4 Years For Stealing Sugar

A businessman on Tuesday slumped in court as he was sentenced to 4 years imprisonment for stealing 14,400 bags of sugar valued at N22.2 million belonging to Dangote Company Limited. The convict was charged along with his company, D.N. Olusesi Commercial and Industrial Company for conspiracy and stealing. The sentence of two years on each count would run concurrently.

ICPC has arrested two persons for extorting money from members of the public by parading themselves as ICPC officials.

Police Arrest Man Over Kidnap Of Wonder Bank Chair

The police in Ibadan, have arrested a man for abducting the chairman of an investment company, known in local parlance as wonder bank. Mr. Dare Olawale, Chairman, Wealth Solution Investment, was abducted and held for 17 days in solitary confinement. He was released after paying a ransom.

Girl, 15, Locked Up For 10 Years

For almost 10 years now, a physically challenged girl, 15, has been locked up in a room in Ibadan by people suspected to be her parents. The girl was left to her fate by her original custodians who abandoned her to an unknown woman who visits the house once a week to give her food. The police have planned to rescue the girl and apprehend her custodians.

Lagos Police Investigates Murder Case

The police have commenced investigation into the circumstances surrounding the murder of a 60- year old woman in Lagos last Monday. The deceased, Jemilat Oredoyin, a resident of No. 28, Oreta Road, Ikorodu was allegedly hit with a hard object on the head by a couple Mr and Mrs Gani Ojoge after a minor dispute. Some neighbours of the deceased told newsmen that the deceased died as a result of the injury she sustained on her head.

Bad Fuel: Oando Faces Class Action Lawsuit

Motorists and other fuel users affected by the adulterated petrol imported by Oando Plc have commenced moves to institute a class action lawsuit against the company for damage to their vehicles. Investigations revealed that legal practitioners contracted by owners of affected vehicles were busy gathering details to harmonise their positions.

Lagos Police Boss Promoted to AIG, Heads Zone 2

Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, Mr. MD Abubakar has been elevated to the rank of an Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) and moved to Zone 2, Onikan Lagos.  He is to take over from Mr. Israel Ajao who has also been redeployed to Intelligence department, Force Headquarters, Abuja.
