Okah: MEND Seeks Independent Probe

The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) has asked the Federal Government to allow an independent team to verify that one of its leaders, Henry Okah has not been killed.  Meanwhile, the Police authorities are investigating him for aiming to destabilise Nigeria by promoting secessionist interests, killing security personnel and civilians, plotting to overthrow some governments in West Africa and theft of weapons.

…Ranks second poorest OPEC member

Information made public by the United States (U.S.) on earnings by members of the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) for 2007 has placed Nigeria fourth on the ladder with a total income of $55 billion. The amount, the report noted, did not translate into improved standards of living for the citizens as their plight remained deplorable with a mere $409 as per capita income.

No Oil Block Allocation Until 2010

The Federal Government has put to rest speculations that another oil block allocation may be conducted before the end of this year. Special Adviser to the President on Petroleum Matters, Dr. Emmanuel Eghogah, has declared that government will not allocate any oil block until next year or a year after.

Nigeria Lost $200m To Oil Theft Last Year, Says Chevron

Chevron Nigeria Limited (CNL), on Tuesday told the House of Representatives Committee on Environment that Nigeria lost about $200 million to oil theft in the Niger Delta region last year. General Manager of CNL, Lanre Kalejaiye, pointed out that, Nigeria’s share of the loss was 60 per cent while oil firms bore the remaining 40 per cent.

Bush Allays Fears Over New US Bases in Africa

President George W. Bush has allayed fears that the United States (U.S.) is trying to expand its military influence through the U.S. African Command (AFRICOM) by building new military bases on the continent. The command's headquarters would remain in Germany, following reservations among Africans over its creation.

House Accuses CNL of Violating Environmental Laws

Oil Companies Can't Meet Gas Flare Deadline - Chevron Boss

Mr. Fred Nelson, Chairman and Managing Director of Chevron Mid-Africa Business Unit, has declared that oil companies in the country may not meet the December 2008 deadline to end gas flare-out, saying that 2010 is a better date to achieve that.

FG Uncovers Illegal Mining Licenses

The Federal Government has suspended further granting of the mining licenses. Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Sharafat Ishola, disclosed that over 2,300 mining licenses were issued without the knowledge of the minister and said that a revalidation exercise is on to weed out those that did not follow due process.  Meanwhile a new Mineral and Metal Policy to guide activities in Nigeria's mining sector has been approved by the FG.

Inflation Rate Rises to 8.6%

National Bureau of Statistics on Tuesday said the Nigerian consumer price inflation in January stood at 8.6 per cent, posting a two per cent increase from the last December figure of 6.6 per cent.

Fire Razes 100 Shops In Katsina Market

A ferocious fire at the early hours of Wednesday destroyed 100 shops and properties worth hundred of millions of naira at the Katsina Central market. The fire was alleged to be a result of electrical fault in one of the burnt shops.

Police Shoot Two Robbers, Recover Guns, Ammunition

Federal Capital Territory Police Commissioner, Haruna John, said on Tuesday that a four-man gang of armed robbers had been arrested by the police. He explained that the robbers had stormed Utako Market, Abuja and robbed people of their money and other belongings. According to him, the police shot two of the robbers dead during a gunbattle. Two locally made pistols and five live ammunitions were recovered from them.

Minister Orders Review Of Petroleum Subsidy Account

The Minister of State for Finance, Mr. Remi Babalola has mandated the Auditor –General of the Federation (AGF) to review the Petroleum Subsidy Account to ensure that the government’s funds are properly utilised. The AGF is also assigned to audit all inflows into the Federation Account to authenticate completeness and the integrity of balances.

The National Boundary Commission (NBC) on Monday said the country had ceded Tombo-Mota in the Abadam LGA of Borno State to Niger Republic. Oil Company Worker Killed In Port Harcourt

A staff member of Saipem Contracting Nigerian Limited, the oil servicing arm of the Eni Group, was reportedly shot dead by suspected armed robbers, Tuesday, around the Oil Mill Market Junction on the outskirts of Port Harcourt.

Magistrate Remands Two For Arson

An Abakaliki Magistrate Court on Tuesday remanded two persons in prison custody for allegedly setting fire on the house of their community leader. The Chief Magistrate, Mr. Benard Ukwa-Chinua, who made the order in Abakaliki, said his court lacked the jurisdiction to entertain such a matter and directed the prosecutor to transfer the case file to the state Director of Public Prosecution. He adjourned the matter indefinitely.

Sylva Calls On Investors To Bayelsa

Governor Timipre Sylva of Bayelsa state has urged investors not to wait till absolute peace was achieved in the Niger Delta before they could come to the region. He stressed that one of the factors responsible for hostilities in the region is the absence of employment opportunities for the youths, saying that investment in the Niger Delta would contribute to the creation of employment for the youths and also ensure peace in the region.

Fire Razes Houses, Properties In P/Harcourt

An early morning fire sparked by fuel vendors while in the process of adulterating petroleum products has razed no fewer than 22 houses at Oruworukwo community in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. Properties worth millions were destroyed.

Gunmen Kidnap Agip’s Manager in P’Harcourt

About six gunmen on Wednesday abducted the Divisional Public Affairs Manager of Agip Oil Company, Mr Naaman Feyi Deinye in Port Harcourt. His driver was shot by the kidnappers and is being treated at the Agip clinic in Port Harcourt.

JTF, Ijaw Youths Clash

Men of the Joint Task Force (JTF) in Bayelsa State, recently clashed with members of Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) at Ologbobiri, Southern Ijaw LGA of the state over an AK 47 rifle found on the group’s president, Dr Chris Ekiyor. The IYC boss, receiving treatment in Yenagoa, has said that his seized AK 47 rifle was licensed. The JTF denies manhandling Ekiyor and his colleagues.

Amaechi Orders Tom To Surrender Weapons

The Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, has ordered the leader of the Niger Delta Vigilante Movement, Ateke Tom, to surrender his arms as a proof of his genuine interest in peace. Tom had on February 13, joined the Niger Delta Non Violent Movement to show his willingness to embrace peace, saying that it was the only viable option available to them.

Four-man Panel to Resolve Bayelsa Crisis

A four-man peace panel have been set up to resolve the crisis in Bayelsa state over the control of the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The parties to the crisis have been ordered to return to status quo ante. But a group of 16 lawmakers of the state House of Assembly claimed, Tuesday, that the Speaker, Werininpre Seibarugu, stands impeached. The Police, had on Monday, sealed off the premises of the State House of Assembly.

Illegal Detention Centre: Police Arrest 19 Suspects

The police in Oyo State on Monday continued their clampdown of the operators of an illegal detention centre in the state capital where 23 people mostly teenagers were rescued. The police have arrested 19 suspects. The suspects include workers of the centre and parents of the victims who were said to have conspired with the head of the centre.

NDLEA Arrests Five For Drug Trafficking

The Murtala Mohammed International Airport command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency had between February 9th to16th, 2008 arrested five suspected drug traffickers. The suspects all ingested hard drugs that tested positive for cocaine.

Inferno Claims Lives in Lagos

About three people were feared dead, Wednesday, when a petrol tanker burst into flames along Lagos- Ibadan expressway. The trailer split into two and a part of it plunged into the river while the other half remained on the expressway.  The National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas (NUPENG), has begun the search for the owner of the tanker to determine the destination of the tanker and its occupants at the time of the explosion.

Fire Consumes Baby, Building, Other Valuables

An afternoon fire in Oshodi area of Lagos recently claimed the life of a baby, razed a storey building and destroyed properties worth millions of naira. The cause of the inferno was not immediately ascertained but a source said it started from the top floor and may have been triggered by power surge in the building.

Bunkering: 2 Naval Officers, 15 Others Nabbed

Two Naval officers and a police officer were among 17 suspected oil bunkerers arrested by a combined team of soldiers and the Security and Civil Defence Corps in Lagos. The team also impounded about eight tankers and over 2000 Jerry Cans filled with petroleum products used for the illegal activities.
