Review/Analysis

In review this week, kidnap/hostage stood tall on the index with terrible incidents of abduction and child trafficking. Clerics, business persons and political office holders, the aged, and even corps members serving the nation, were all victims of kidnap. It is scary how families, in a bid to exploit each other also turn to kidnapping as witnessed when a sister kidnapped her niece to get money out of her sister, while children faked their own kidnap to exploit their parents. However, pressure from the security agents made some of the kidnappers set free their hostage while others are still held hostage. The authorities were able to rescue a few as they remain on the trail for suspects and those in captive. This was witnessed across various regions of the country.

Murder and assassination remained high with very sad killings on record, this was evident in a family of six, including their eight-month-old baby, who were gruesomely murdered at Ikorodu area of Lagos State. The authorities were able to make notable arrest of suspects and killed some while others remain large. Other cases include lone and mob related killings. The south-east and south-west part of the country recorded more.

Robbery incidents maintained its pace as there were trickles of attacks by armed men across the nation. But even the trickles of attack bore the hallmarks of terrible violence. This caused some residents to resort to jungle justice as a suspected robber met his waterloo when he was caught, lynched and set ablaze by an angry mob. The law enforcements agents did not sleep on their duty as they captured and took some robbery suspects into custody, while some were killed by the police. However, many others made good their escape. The south-west witnessed more of this callous acts of violence.

Terrible rape incidents were also on record as the authorities paraded a man, who raped a six-month-old baby and a father who raped his 15-year-old daughter. It was a mild drama when a suspect attempted taking his life in court, after he was remanded in prison custody for raping his 17-year-old daughter. The police also arrested a serial rapist, who was wanted for raping under-aged girls. The victims were mostly minors, who were defiled by domestic staff, trusted neighbours and relatives. Parents are advised to exercise due diligence in protecting their young children against predators, even within the household.

The government charges every Nigerian and persons that are resident in Nigeria to be security conscious.
