Review/Analysis

Kidnap/hostage cases maintained a top spot on the crime index. The security agencies put up spirited efforts to apprehend suspects and rescue hostages. This was seen in the case of a political party chieftain, who was kidnapped together with two of his aides. The victims regained their freedom10 days later when the kidnappers left them at their hideout, giving the victims the opportunity to escape before they could return. Massive arrest of criminal gangs and some other suspects were recorded. These incidents were prevalent in the south-south, south-east and south-west regions.

Robbery incidents took a soft pedal with few cases on record. The Rapid Response Squad of the Lagos State Police Command were able to arrest two suspected members of a car-snatching syndicate. The RRS officials were said to have also recovered about eight stolen vehicles from the suspects. All tributes should go to the Nigerian Police Force (NPF) for their effort in the arrest of suspects, vandals and gang leaders in parts of the south-west and south-south regions.

Terrorism, which had been on the rise in recent weeks, took a nosedive with just few incidents on record. Three female suicide bombers were shot and killed in Monguno town, Borno State, as they were getting ready to attack some Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), but were detected by the vigilant troops and gunned down, with two dying on the spot. Unfortunately the explosive they were strapped with exploded and injured two civilians nearby. The north-east region continues to bear the brunt of these cruel acts.

Every Nigerian and persons resident in Nigeria are charged to be security conscious. It is remains the responsibility of everyone to be a neighbourhood watch.
