Abducted Jonathan’s Nephew Found Dead in Bayelsa River

Three days after he was abducted along with his uncle, Samuel Okies (35) and nephew of the former President Goodluck Jonathan, was February 19, found dead in the waterways of Otuoke, in Ogbia LGA of Bayelsa State. Okies was reportedly abducted alongside Chief Inengite Nitabai (72) on February 16. Okies' body was reportedly found floating in the Otuoke creek. The discovery of Okies body is creating fears over the safety of the abducted septuagenarian. The deceased Okies, according to community sources, was always in the company of the abducted Chief Nitabai.

Abducted Commissioner’s Mother Regains Freedom as Mastermind is Arrested

The Rivers State Police Command, February 19, revealed that a member of Tam-George’s family in Okrika LGA of the state masterminded the kidnap of the 85-year-old mother of the State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Austin Tam-George. Police Public Relations Officer, Ahmad Mohammad, who also confirmed that the octogenarian, Patience Tam-George, regained freedom on February 18, disclosed that one Sylvanus George, who had been arrested by the police, was the mastermind of the abduction. The victim was released in Buguma, the headquarters of Asari-Toru LGA, where she was picked up by the police. Mohammad explained that the on-going investigation by the police led to the arrest of the prime suspect, adding that Sylvanus had since confessed to orchestrating the kidnap of the commissioner’s mother.

Kidnappers Demand N200m to Free Abducted Senator’s Mother

The abductors of Senator Emmanuel Aguariavwodo’s mother have established contact with her family and demanded for N200m as ransom. The woman, Sarah Aguariavwodo (80) was abducted on February 16 from her home town, Okpare Olomu in Ughelli South LGA of Delta State by about 6 gunmen, who invaded her residence and forced her into the vehicle after shooting into the air. Police spokeswoman, Celestina Kalu, confirmed the kidnap of the octogenarian.

NIS Nabs 17 Libya-Bound Trafficking Victims

Officials of the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) have arrested 17 Nigerians attempting to cross the border into Niger on their way to Libya with no valid papers. The comptroller of immigration for Katsina state, Ahmed Alfa, February 23, disclosed that immigration officers intercepted the 17 persons in two batches at a border crossing with Niger. The victims, 10 women and seven men aged between 18 and 40 years, were apprehended on February 14 and 21. Alfa added that they had been handed over to National Agency for Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) for further investigation and possible prosecution. A hunt for the traffickers and their sponsors has also been launched.

Wife of Environmental Rights Activist Kidnapped in Benin

The Wife of the Executive Director, Environmental Rights Action/Friends of the Earth Nigeria (ERA/FoEN), Justina Ojo, was, on February 22, abducted by yet-to-be identified gunmen. Her husband, Godwin Uyi Ojo, confirmed that Justina was whisked away by unknown gunmen in front of their Benin City, Edo State residence, and that the abductors were yet to contact the family. ERA/FoEN has, however, urged the abductors to release their victim unconditionally and unharmed, while calling on the Police to ensure her safe release.

Ogun Police Arrest Truck Hijackers, Recover Goods

The Ogun State Police Command, February 21, arrested four truck hijackers in the Ijebu area of the state, and recovered a hijacked truck with the goods inside intact. The suspects had reportedly hijacked a truck loaded with new tyres in Lagos and were travelling to the eastern part of the country before they were intercepted by police operatives attached to the Ogbere division. The state Police Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, said the command had intensified patrol on highways in the state because intelligence reports indicated that some criminals now hijack tankers and trailers loaded with petroleum products and goods. The suspects upon interrogation, reportedly confessed that the truck, with its contents, was hijacked in Lagos State, and they were heading for the East.

Police Arraign Two Catechists, Others for Anambra Robbery

The Anambra State Police Command, February 22, arraigned two catholic catechists, Agbo Peter and Patrick Ajuluchukwu, alongside two others, Daniel Nwoye and Solomon Igoji, before an Ogidi Magistrate’s Court in Anambra State for alleged armed robbery and illegal possession of firearms. It was learnt that the suspects were arrested at Nkpor in Idemili North Council area of the state by police officers from the office of the Assistant Inspector-General of Police (Zone 9, Umuahia). A pump-action gun and some ammunition were allegedly recovered from them. The presiding magistrate, H.N Obianwu, granted them bail in the sum of N100,000 with one surety each.

Police Search for Robbers in Police Uniform

The Lagos State Police Command, February 23, said it was on the trail of members of an armed robbery gang, who put on police uniform and mounted an illegal checkpoint at the Anthony area, along the Ikorodu Road. It was gathered that the gang also harassed motorists. One of the suspected robbers, who disguised as policemen on a stop-and-search, Gbenga Erinfolami, was arrested. The gang had, on February 19, laid siege at the Anthony bus stop area of the Ikorodu Road, stopping vehicles and extorting money from them. An eyewitness put a distress call across to the police, and the men of the Anthony division moved to the scene. Erinfolami was arrested and a victim, who was put in the booth of his car, was rescued, while other members escaped.

Military Dislodges Armed Groups in Akwa Ibom

Operatives of the joint military operations comprising the Nigerian Navy and the Nigerian Army in Akwa Ibom state have dislodged some armed criminal groups terrorising communities in the state. It was learnt that the groups also raped women, stole outboard engines, boats, fishing nets and cash. Commander, NNS Jubilee, Ikot Abasi, David Adeniran, February 24, disclosed that the groups had their hideouts on many islands accessible only through creeks in the Eastern Obolo and Ibeno LGAs. He said intelligence reports revealed that most pirates attacks and other criminal activities in the area were being initiated from the hideouts on the islands. According to him, the groups were responsible for the recent attack on a police station at Eastern Obolo, which led to the death of two policemen and the carting away of arms and ammunition.

Court Sentences Man to Death by Hanging for Armed Robbery

A Lagos State High Court in Ikeja, February 23, convicted one Friday James of armed robbery and sentenced him to death by hanging. The convict was said to have robbed one Olanrewaju of her jewellery worth about N100,000 at gunpoint. The convict, who was said to be armed with a gun and a machete, was said to have also attacked and inflicted injuries on Olanrewaju’s husband with his weapons. The state prosecutor, Akin George, told the court that the convict committed the crime on February 17, 2012 at about 3am in the Ikeja area of Lagos. Justice Oluwatoyin Ipaye found James guilty on the two counts preferred against him by the state. The judge said the prosecution proved its case beyond reasonable doubts. Justice Ipaye had recently convicted Omoilodan Seun and Gbenga Kayode of conspiracy, armed robbery and attempted armed robbery and sentenced them to death by hanging. The convicts were also said to have waylaid and robbed one Rilwan Gbadamosi and his wife on November 9, 2011.

Robber Dies in Gun Battle with Police

A member of an armed robbery gang was, February 24, shot dead during an exchange of fire between the gang and police in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. Police Public Relations Officer, Ahmad Muhammad, said the robbers were fleeing after raiding a bank on Obagi Road in GRA when the police intercepted them, leading to a gun battle during which one of the robbers sustained gunshot injuries and was abandoned by his gang members. The robbers reportedly carted away an undisclosed amount of money from the bank. Muhammad said they also arrested two heavily-armed robbers. He said two locally-made revolver pistols and two rounds of .9mm live ammunition were among items recovered.

Police Arrest Notorious Armed Robbers at Vigil

Three suspected members of One Million boys, a notorious armed robbery gang in the Badagry area of Lagos State have been arrested by the Lagos State Police Command. The suspects were arrested on February 19 while they were allegedly attempting to rob a church in the J4 area of Seme during a vigil. The police also recovered a double-barrelled locally-made pistol and a toy gun from the suspects. The suspects, who denied being robbers, stated that they had run out of transport fare after visiting their friend in the area, and they decided to go to the church to solicit transport fare when the policemen arrested them. The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, said the suspects would be charged to court as soon as investigations were concluded.

222 Persons Renounce Cultism in Edo and Delta States

At least 222 cultists have publicly renounced cultism in Edo and Delta states. While 43 reportedly renounced cultism in the Edo State-owned Ambrose Alli University, Epkoma; 179 cultists renounced their membership in Delta State institutions in Ozoro, Ogwashi Uku and Asaba. It was also gathered that two suspected cultists were on February 18 arrested by the police at the University town Ekpoma for allegedly recruiting some students for a cult group. A senior police officer attached to Ekpoma police division confirmed that the suspects were arrested on a tip-off and with the help of vigilante group members in the area, adding that they would be charged to court on completion of investigation.

One Killed, Several Wounded in Edo Communal Clash

One person was, February 23, killed while several others were injured in a communal clash between the Uneme-Erhurhun in Akoko-Edo LGA and Okpella Ogute in Etsako East LGA both of Edo state. The tension forced the Army to move in to avoid further killings. The area, with precious stones deposits, is being claimed by both communities, an issue that has led to clashes. It was learned that the latest clash occurred when some youths from Erhurhu community allegedly barricaded the road to the forest to prevent some Okpella residents from conveying log of woods. A fight broke out in the process leading to the death of one of the youths while houses, vehicles and motorcycles were destroyed.

One Killed in Renewed Cult Clash in Delta Community

A renewed cult clash in Ughelli North LGA of Delta State, February 20, claimed the life of one Philip Iwese. The victim, suspected to be member of a rival cult group in Ughelli Town, was found lying in a pool of his blood around Ekuigbo Ughelli after he was allegedly attacked the previous night by his assailants. A resident of the area disclosed that the victim was clubbed to death by his assailants, who trailed him to a drinking bar.

Military Patrol Delta Creeks with Gunboats

Security operatives continued the search for former Niger-Delta militant leader, Government Ekpemupolo, alias Tompolo, in the creeks of Gbaramatu Kingdom, Warri South West LGA of Delta State. The security agencies could not produce him in court on February 19, as ordered by a Federal High Court sitting in Lagos, which renewed a bench warrant for his arrest, on February 8. Security agents continue keeping tight surveillance to track suspected contacts of the ex-militant leader for possible clue on his whereabouts.

Navy Arrests Six Ghanaian, Nigerian Pirates, Recover Oil Vessel

Operatives of the Nigerian Navy (NN) have arrested six suspected pirates, of Ghanaian and Nigerian nationalities, who hijacked a Saudi Arabian oil tanker, MT MAXIMUS, chartered by a South Korean company off the Coast of Cote D’Ivoire.  After the vessel was hijacked, the 18-man crew members were locked up in a citadel for eight days, while being tortured. The pirates were later arrested off the Coast of Sao Tome after a gun battle with the naval forces that left one of the pirates dead. The arrested suspects were identified as Captain Mike Ogboroma, Ayo Joshua, Marcus Adesoji, Adeyemi Paul, Oluwafemi Samuel and Collins Friday. Two of the pirates escaped from the stolen vessel by using two crew members, a Pakistani and an Indian, as hostage bait. Confirming the arrest, the Chief of Naval Training and Operations (CTOP), Rear Admiral Henry Babalola, said the naval team was highly professional.

Private Pipeline Security Nabs Oil Thieves in Ogun

A private security firm engaged by the Pipelines and Products Marketing Company (PPMC), a subsidiary of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), to monitor and patrol pipelines has arrested five oil thieves in Ogun State. The firm, Topline Leighton Limited, also uncovered an illegal bunkering site in Ogere Water Works, a suburb of the state. Over 2,000 quantities of 50-litre gallons of stolen petrol were recovered. The Security Coordinator of the firm, Adetona Adigun, February 23, pointed out that since the firm assumed the surveillance of the pipelines, it had made series of arrests and discoveries on the activities of vandals under System 2B network, which accounts for 60 per cent of petrol supply in the country. Adigun said the five vandals arrested would be handed over to government for interrogation.

Militants Threaten to Blow-Up More Oil Installations

Niger Delta Avengers, the militant group which claimed responsibility for the recent blowing up the Forcados Terminal Pipeline in Delta State, has threatened further attacks on oil installations in the region until the Federal Government addressed its grievances. The group, February 22, threatened that it was prepared to reduce Nigeria’s daily oil production and supply to zero barrel if its agitation was ignored. The lamented the ‘oppression’ of the people of the region, and called for the practice of true federalism where resources would be controlled by the people.

Soldiers Raid Searching for Ex-Militant, Raid Rivers Community

Soldiers of the Nigerian Army, February 22, raided Yeghe community in Gokana LGA of Rivers State, claiming to be searching for an ex-militant, Solomon Ndigbara. It was learnt that the house of the former warlord was razed by the soldiers, amidst heavy shooting. Indigenes of the community were said to have abandoned their homes and fled to neighbouring communities as the soldiers took over Ndigbara’s house and its surroundings. It was gathered that the army operations were extended to Khana LGA. Sources said that some youths working for the former militant leader had set ablaze the campaign office of the Rivers South-East senatorial candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Senator Magnus Abe, in Bori, Khana LGA. The attack on Abe’s campaign office, according to a community source, was in retaliation of the soldiers’ raid of Ndigbara residence. The Public Relations Officer, 2 Brigade of the Nigerian Army, Port Harcourt, Captain Eli Lazarus, confirmed that there was an ongoing military operation by the Army in Gokana.

Amnesty Office Recovers 14,447 Weapons from Ex-Militants

The Presidential Amnesty Office, February 22, said that it has recovered 14,447 weapons from some ex-militants of the Niger Delta, who embraced the presidential amnesty programne. The Amnesty Office stated that the office also facilitated the destruction of the last cache of 48,401 rounds of small arms and medium calibre ammunition surrendered by the ex-militants during the disarmament phase of the programme. It was stated that the destruction of the arms and ammunition which held under the second phase of ‘Exercise Thunder Peace’ took place at the 6 battalion of the Nigerian Army, Akwa Ibom. The exercise was reportedly supervised by the Nigerian Army, the Office of the National Security Adviser and the Akwa Ibom State Government. The officer in charge of exercise Thunder Peace, Maj. M.B. Grema, disclosed that the arms and ammunition were recovered from militants who surrendered in Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Delta, Edo and Ondo states.

Two Boko Haram Suspects Arrested in IDP Camp

The Nigerian military has arrested two Boko Haram suspects, Audu Umar and Hassan Umar, for smuggling themselves among the Internally Displaced People (IDPs) brought from Pulka to Gwoza IDPs’ camp in Borno State. The male suspects are undergoing interrogation by the military and intelligence operatives. The Media Coordinator, Operation Lafiya Dole in the North-East, Air Commodore Dele Alonge, February 20, said that the military has sustained its counter-insurgency operations where some terrorists have been eliminated and others apprehended in the North-East.

Nigerian Military Blocks Boko Haram Logistic Corridor, Arrests Spy

The Nigerian troops have successfully blocked Boko Haram Terrorists (BHT) logistic corridor. The Director of Army Public Relations (DAPR), Col. Sani Usman, February 19, stated that the military had intensified their operations to clear the remnants of Boko Haram from the region. He added that the 5 Brigade Quick Response Force (QRF) had further exploited beyond Kekeno-Mile 90-Gudumbali and blocked the terrorists’ logistics corridor. The troops recovered 13 motorcycles, and 1,170 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), stored in 39 jerry cans, he added. The Army spokesman further disclosed that the troops also conducted fighting patrol to clear suspected terrorist settlements along Gawala village and west of Kukawa towards Gudumbali axis. According to Usman, the troops of 119 Task Force Battalion conducted fighting patrol around Lake Chad waters, where a suspected Boko Haram terrorist spy, Mallam Goni, was arrested.

23 Boko Haram Terrorists Killed, 150 Hostages Rescued by Nigeria/Cameroon Troops

At least 23 Boko Haram terrorists were killed and 150 hostages rescued as Nigerian and Cameroonian troops continue clearing out terrorists’ hideouts. The Nigerian Army, February 23, disclosed that troops of 7 Division carried out major operations against the Boko Haram terrorist’s locations in Talala and Kumshe axis. During the joint operation between the Nigerian military and the Cameroonian forces along Banki-Kumshe axis, 20 Boko Haram terrorists were killed, while the troops destroyed 4 AK47 rifles and captured a gun truck mounted with an Anti-Aircraft Gun (AA Gun) and 2 AK 47 rifles, as well as a 60mm mortar and a Dane gun. The troops at Kodo rescued 150 persons, who were mainly children. The Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Col. Sani Usman, confirmed the successful operations.

Civilian JTF Arrests Shekau’s Suspected Impostor

The local security volunteer group, known as Civilian JTF, in Borno State, February 21, claimed that it had arrested a notorious Boko Haram kingpin, named Bashir, in Konduga LGA of the State. The Civilian JTF noted that Bashir Sarkin Yanka, which in Hausa means “Bashir the King of Slaughter” had been the terrorist acting as Abubakar Shekau in some videos on the social media. But the Nigerian military said it was yet to confirm the arrest of the Boko Haram kingpin.

Supreme Court ‎Affirms Death Sentence on Reverend King

The Supreme Court, February 26, affirmed the death sentence passed on the General-Overseer of the Christian Praying Assembly, Chukwuemeka Ezeugo (aka Rev. King), ‎by a Lagos High Court in Ikeja for the murder and attempted murder of some members of his church in 2006. The cleric was sentenced to death by hanging by the trial judge, Justice Olubunmi Oyewole on ‎January 11, 2007. ‎A five-man panel of the Supreme Court, led by Justice Walter Onnoghen, dismissed the appeal filed by the cleric against the concurrent judgments of the Lagos High Court in Ikeja and Lagos Division of the Court of Appeal, which had both convicted him of the alleged crimes. The condemned cleric was arraigned on six counts of murder of a member of his church, Ann Uzoh, and attempted murder of five other devotees. He was said to have poured petrol on the deceased and the five other victims and set them on fire thereafter.

Police Redeploy Delta DPOs over Misconduct

The Nigeria Police Force said it had redeployed all Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) in the Delta state command over professional misconduct. The Force Public Relations Officer, Olabisi Kolawole, February 22, who disclosed that several officers had been redeployed from duty posts, said the action was in response to complaints received from members of the public on the misconduct of policemen. She further disclosed that an Assistant Commissioner of police was also being investigated, 16 junior officers were facing disciplinary action for misconduct, while a traffic warden was dismissed. Kolawole said that Lagos had the highest complaints with 424, representing 33 per cent, while Imo, Jigawa and Kebbi had two each. She said that the platform was not aimed at castigating activities of police but to ensure international best practices.

Military on High Alert to Combat Militancy in Niger Delta -CDS

The Chief of Defence Staff, General Abayomi Olonishakin, February 24, said the military had placed troops on high alert to combat any militant attack in the Niger Delta. Olonishakin, who stated this at the inauguration of 25 locally-built gunboats donated to the troops of the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Pathfinder in Port Harcourt, added that the military was assessing the situation in the Niger Delta in order to maintain law and order in the region. Olonishakin expressed optimism that the 25 gunboats newly acquired by the Nigerian Navy would drastically reduce oil theft, sea piracy and other forms of illegalities in the nation’s maritime environment.  The Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Adm. Ibok-Ekwe Ibas, disclosed that the navy employed the services of local engineers to construct the 25 gunboats to save cost and cut capital flight.

Man Punches 60-Year-Old to Death

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), February 21, said it arrested a 27-year-old man, Musa Inuwa, for allegedly punching a 60-year-old man to death. The state’s Commandant, Abdullahi Ibrahim, disclosed that the suspect was apprehended by the youth vigilante team known as Civilian JTF, who brought the accused to NSCDC command. The victim, who suffered grievous bodily harm leading to his death, was said to have asked the suspect were he could locate a chemist to buy drugs. But the suspect, who was already intoxicated on illicit substance, complained that the old man was disturbing him. There after the suspect punched him. The man fell forward and hit his head on the concrete pavement that rendered him unconscious. The victim, who was quickly rushed to Umaru Shehu Specialist Hospital, however, died as a result of massive brain trauma. According to him, the case had been transferred to the Borno Police Command for further investigation and prosecution.

Cultists Kill 23-Year-Old Man in Ondo, Injure Octogenarian Mother

Suspected cult members went on rampage in Owo area of Ondo State, killing a 23-year-old man, Suleiman Lateef, and shot his octogenarian mother, Sherifat Lateef. The suspects reportedly shot into the residence of the deceased, killing the victim instantly, while the mother reportedly sustained bullet wounds. Following a distress call by the residents of the area, one of the suspects was later arrested, and is said to be helping police in their investigation. Police spokesman, Femi Joseph, confirmed the incident on February 25, and added that the matter had been transferred to the Department of Criminal Investigation and Intelligence for further investigation.

Four Killed in Delta Community over Land Dispute

Unidentified gunmen, February 15, killed four youths of Otulu Community in Aniocha North LGA of Delta State over land dispute. The youths were allegedly waylaid somewhere around Issele-Azagba after a protracted land dispute between the people of Ogwashi-Uku and Issele-Azagba Community. State Police Commissioner, Alkali Baba Usman, who confirmed the incident, said that while the police intensified search for the assailants, the recovered body of one of the four victims was deposited in Ogwashi-Uku General Hospital mortuary, while investigation is on-going.

Man Beats Wife to Death over Adultery

A middle aged man, James Uguru, has been arrested by the Ebonyi State Police Command for beating his wife, Jacinta, to death over allegations of adultery in Ndubia Inyimaegu community in Izzi LGA. Uguru allegedly beat his wife to death after she prevented him from chasing after her lover, who was hiding in their bedroom. Confirming the incident, Police Public Relations Officer, George Okafor, February 22, disclosed that the suspect had angrily beaten his wife to stupor when the deceased stopped him from chasing after her alleged lover. It was learned that trouble started when the couple was discussing in the sitting room and suddenly a phone started ringing in their bedroom. As he made to go for the phone, his wife held him back. It was gathered that as he was being prevented from entering the bedroom, the wife’s alleged lover ran out from their bedroom. Her insistence that he should not chase after the man made him vent his anger on her.

Four Feared Dead in Army, Militants Clash in Ogoni Community

Four persons were, February 22, feared dead in Bori, headquarters of Gokhana LGA of Rivers State as soldiers allegedly engaged loyalists of an ex-militant leader in a shootout. The Movement for the Survival of Ogoni People (MOSOP) and the Civil Liberties Organisation have condemned the military operation in Bori, saying that it had led to loss of innocent lives in some communities in the area. Publicity Secretary of MOSOP, Fegalo Nsuke, said that the military invasion of Yeghe community on February 22 resulted in the death of three persons, adding that some others sustained gunshot injuries. The Paramount Ruler of Yeghe Community, His Royal Highness, Chief Mene Baridam, has condemned the killing of two soldiers and other innocent Ogonis in Bori and Yeghe communities. He appealed to the Chief of Army Staff and the Rivers State Government to intervene in the crisis. Governor Nyesom Wike has appealed to those who fled Gokhana and Khana LGAs in the wake of the military operations in communities in the councils to come back.

Abia Monarch Assassinated

Unidentified gunmen, February 23, killed Eze James Nwabeke, the traditional ruler of Ikeala Ahiaba autonomous community in Obingwa council area of Abia State at his residence. It was gathered that the body of the late monarch was mutilated, while his wife and daughter in-law were also attacked with machete. The reason for the attack was yet to be ascertained. However, it was gathered that the late monarch was preparing for his coronation. A resident of the community disclosed that the incident occurred in the early hours of the day when they were awakened to disturbances in the neighbourhood and discovered that the monarch had been killed.

Nurse, Two Others Arraigned for Murder

The Lagos State Police Command, February 22, docked three persons before an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrate’s Court over the murder of 40-year-old Helen Peters. The accused are Henry Uwadiegwu (25), Monday Ochonu (25) and Taiwo Adebiyi (57), a nurse. The prosecutor, Corporal Mariam Dauda, told the court that Uwadiegwu and his friends had, on January 19, conspired to murder the deceased, who was Uwadiegwu’s benefactor. The prosecutor said the accused had also invited Adebiyi, a nurse, to help in injecting the deceased with 50 miligrammes of Lagatine injection to paralyse her, which eventually led to her death. Magistrate K.O. Ariyo did not take the plea of the accused and ordered that the case file should be duplicated and forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPPs) for legal advice. The accused were remanded at the Ikoyi Prisons. The magistrate then adjourned the case to March 30.

Man Kills Relative over N100 Debt in Ebonyi

A 50-year-old man, Onuigbo Nwankwoeke, was, February 22, killed by his relative, Michael Ochaya, in Ikwo LGA of Ebonyi State. The man was killed when he went to Michael’s house to ask for N100 owed him. Police Public Relations Officer, George Okafor, disclosed that the brother to the deceased, Nwabueze Nwedu, reported the incident to the police and investigation has commenced. According to reports, when the late Nwankwoeke got to Ochaya’s house and demanded for his money, Ochaya’s wife gave the deceased the money but, Ochaya forcefully collected the money from the deceased and tore it into shreds. In the process, a scuffle ensued, which led to the death of Nwankwoeke following a heavy blow that Ochaya dealt him.

Herdsmen Kill Seven in Taraba, Anambra Attacks

Five persons were, February 22, killed while four others were injured as suspected Fulani herdsmen invaded Majehuku and Zandukwu villages in the Wukari LGA of Taraba State. The herdsmen were said to have invaded the villages at about 5pm, shooting sporadically. The invaders were said to have razed down five houses. The victims include four women and one man. Police Public Relations Officer, Joseph Kwaji, who confirmed the incident, said no arrest had been made as the hoodlums fled after they attacked the villages. The Taraba State Police Command said that the incident was being investigated by the Criminal Investigation Department of the command. In a related incident, herdsmen attacked and killed two persons in the Ayamelum LGA of Anambra State. The people have called on the state government intervention.

Mark Condemn Agatu Killings as Death Toll Hits 100

The House of Representatives and former Senate President, Senator David Mark, have decried the latest attacks carried out by suspected Fulani herdsmen in Agatu LGA of Benue State and have called on President Muhammadu Buhari to urgently mobilise the security agencies to end the senseless bloody siege on the area, which has reportedly led to death of over 100 persons. The attacks started shortly after Mark, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was declared winner of the Benue South Senatorial District poll rerun held on February 20. Since he was declared winner over his rival in the All Progressives Congress (APC), residents in Okokolo, Akwu, Ocholonya, Adagbo, Ugboku and Aila villages have been under heavy bombardments by the marauding herdsmen. The attacks, according to eyewitnesses, have left over 100 people dead.

Man Stabs Colleague to Death in Lagos

A 25-year-old man, Raphael Nwoye, February 24, allegedly went on the rampage in the Ajao Estate area of Lagos State, stabbing a 33-year-old colleague, Ifeanyi Onuoha, to death. It was learnt that 33-year-old Onuoha was stabbed in the neck and in the back at after the suspect claimed that Onuoha had been rude to his lover, identified only as Ngozi. It was gathered that Nwoye, who was one of the casual workers, who usually offloaded containers, had had an altercation with Onuoha and had warned the deceased to desist from insulting his lover. Onuoha, also a casual worker, had returned to the area for work when a fresh argument over Ngozi ensued. It was said that Nwoye, who had a knife in a bag he carried, allegedly rushed at Onuoha and stabbed him in the neck and in the back. The deceased reportedly moved away while two bystanders, one of them identified only as Kenneth, tried to hold the suspect to prevent further attack. A resident quickly alerted the Ajao Estate Police Division. The suspect was thereafter arrested by the police.

Gunmen Kill Kwara Poly Student

Unidentified gunmen suspected to be cultists, February 22, shot dead a student of the Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin. The assailants reportedly fled the scene immediately after killing the yet-to-be identified student. An eyewitness disclosed that one of the assailants had first shot the student from a distance, but the bullet did not kill him and he tried to flee the assault. The assailants then chased and grabbed their victim and shot him many times in the head before they fled. The school’s security personnel quickly alerted the police of the incident. The state Police Public Relations Officer, Ajayi Okasanmi, confirmed the killing of the student. Okasanmi also confirmed that the police had commenced investigation into the death.

Over 12 Killed in Fulani, Agatu Farmer’s Crisis

About 12 people have been killed in the renewed clash between Fulani herdsmen and Agatu farmers, while several others remain unaccounted for. Akwu, Adagbo and Ayila communities in Agatu LGA of Benue State were, February 23, attacked by suspected Fulani herdsmen. A member of the state House of Assembly representing Agatu state constituency, Hon Sule Audu, said he had reported the matter to the police and had been assured that policemen had been sent to the area to quell the crisis. Audu also disclosed that a delegation of Agatu elders met with the state governor, Samuel Ortom, towards find a lasting solution to the incessant crisis.

Septuagenarian, 2 Others Rape 15-Year-Old Girl

A 70-year-old man in Alismie area of Agbor in Delta State, Paul Ogwe, has been arrested by the State Police Command, for allegedly conniving with two other men, Ability Ogwu (65) and Kenneth Okoro (58) to rape a 15-year-old girl. It was gathered that Ogwe and his accomplices had conspired between themselves and lured the girl into a room belonging to Ogwe and took turns to have carnal knowledge. The trio was allegedly caught in the act by a rela­tive of the victim, Patricia Oroy­elu. The victim is said to have some mental health challenges and the men took advantage of this to rape her. The victim's mother, Loveth Oroyelu, who said the suspects had carried out the act on several occasions, lodged the complaint with the police upon which they were arrested. The State Police Pub­lic Relations Officer, Celestina Kalu, confirmed the arrest of the men.

Village Head Arrested for Defiling, Infecting 13-Year-Old Girl with HIV

The Kano State Hisbah Board, February 23, said it had arrested a Village Head in Danbatta LGA of the state for allegedly defiling a 13-year-old girl. The Director General of the board, Dr Abba Sufi, who disclosed this in Kano, also said the Village Head was suspected to have infected his victim with HIV. He said the suspect was arrested on February 22 following complaint from parents of the girl. Sufi said the case had since been forwarded to the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammad Sanusi II, who ordered for his immediate suspension from office.

Trader Rapes Nine-Year-Old Boy

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a 34-year-old trader, Mallam Isiaka, for allegedly raping a nine-year-old boy in the Iju area of the state. It was learnt that Isiaka was arrested and detained on February 20 after the victim complained about pains in his anus to his mother. The boy was said to have opened up to his mother that Isiaka allegedly raped him through the anus at different times when she sent him to buy items from the trader. The boy was taken to the Mirabel Centre for tests which revealed that the boy had been raped through the anus. The mother thereafter reported the matter at the police station and Isiaka was arrested. The Police Public Relations Officer, Dolapo Badmos, confirmed Isiaka’s arrest.

Man, 32, Remanded in Prison over Rape of 6-Year-Old Girl

A 32-year-old horticulture apprentice, Abeng Oji, who was alleged to have raped a six-year-old girl, was February 24, arraigned before an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court sitting in Lagos. The defendant is facing a one-count charge bordering on defilement of minor. The prosecutor, Inspector Feddy Asu, told the court that the defendant committed the alleged offence on January 30, at Ologolo community in Eti-Osa LGA of the state. It was learnt that the suspect lived with the victim’s family. It was gathered that the victim’s parents had gone for a church vigil on January 30, 2016, leaving the girl and the gardener at home when the suspect dragged her to a bathroom and raped her. The accused pleaded not guilty to the charge before the presiding magistrate, Mrs. O.A. Ogunbowale, and was admitted to bail in the sum of N5m with two sureties in like sum. The case was adjourned to April 13 for mention.

Fake Naval Officer Arrested in Lagos

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a fake naval officer, Ahmed Abdullahi, in the Victoria Island area of the state. The 37-year-old Abdullahi from Adamawa State was apprehended on February 17 after he was accosted by the police around the tollgate area and he allegedly showed them his fake naval identity card. It was said that when the policemen were about to let him go, some people in the area reportedly hinted the police that Abdullahi was impersonating and he had been on the navy wanted list. The suspect was thereafter arrested and two fake ID cards recovered from him. Abdullahi said he got the fake ID card to protect his motorcycle from traffic officials, including the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority and policemen. The Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, who paraded Abdullahi and other suspects, said the suspects, if found culpable, would be charged to court.

Police Inspector, Three Others Killed in Inferno

A police inspector, the village head of Jatau community and two others, were, February 21, killed in a fire incident at the Jatau area of Maitumbi, Minna, Niger State. It was gathered that the Inspector, Abu Gani; the village head, Mai-Angwa, and others died after sparks from high-tension wires, caused fire that affected two houses in the area. The high-tension wires passed over the roof of some houses in the community. Residents said there were sparks from the wires immediately power was restored to the community. It was said the sparks caused fire, which razed down two of the houses under the high-tension wires. He added that Gani, who led the police team, tried to rescue some people who were trapped in the buildings. He said the policeman died as he tried to bring some victims out of a burning building. Police Public Relations Officer, Bala Elkana, confirmed the incident and the death toll.

Army Sacks Police Station in Umuahia

Soldiers of the Nigerian Army, February 22, stormed the railway police station in Umuahia, Abia State and whisked away the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) and other policemen after dealing blows on them following the arrest and assault on an army captain for parking his bus at an unauthorised place close to the station. Trouble started when the DPO saw a bus parked close to the station and insisted on arresting the owner of the bus, despite all entreaties of the owner, who opted to remove the bus. The bus owner then identified himself as an army captain, a revelation that got the DPO angrier. Two police officers struggled to drag the army officer to the police station, and in the process tore his clothes. When the army officer eventually agreed to enter the police station, a lady who knew him then placed a call through to his colleagues in the army, who arrived in four patrol vans to pick up the DPO and others.

Wike Directs Security Clampdown on Violent Crimes

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, February 22, directed security agencies in the state to clampdown on cult activities and violent crimes in four LGAs of the state. He also announced the suspension of the Caretaker Committee Chairmen of Abua/Odual, Ahoada East and Ahoada West LGAs for failing to mobilise their stakeholders to attend a special security town hall meeting for Orashi region of the state. Wike, at a special town hall meeting of Omoku, said the meeting, which had in attendance security service commanders and the state commissioner of police, was aimed at restoring peace to Ogba/ Egbema/Ndoni (ONELGA), Abua/Odual, Ahoada East and Ahoada West LGAs of the state. He said the insecurity in the four LGAs had nothing to do with politics, pointing out that the meeting was a move to stem the tide of cult-related killings in ONELGA, kidnapping, armed robbery and communal clashes in the areas.

Policeman Shoots Motorcyclist over N500

A team of policemen, February 19, engaged some tricycle and motorcycle riders in a fight over N500 “security fee” at the Iyana Ishashi end of the Lagos-Badagry Expressway, Lagos State. A policeman, identified as Inspector Wahab, was said to have shot a motorcycle rider, identified as Biliaminu. Biliaminu was said to have been rushed to a private hospital and placed under intensive care. The four policemen, who were attached to the highway patrol team in the Idimu Police Division, reportedly surrendered themselves to the nearest police station in the area. The suspects were later transferred to the state command headquarters and had been detained.

Four Policemen Killed in Yola Accidental Bomb Explosion

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), February 25, confirmed that four persons were killed from an explosion at the police anti-bomb squad office, in Yola, Adamawa State. Senior Information Officer of NEMA, Sanni Datti, who confirmed the incident, said the injured were evacuated to the Federal Medical Centre, Yola. According to the statement, some buildings close to the anti-bomb office, including the Jimeta Primary School, the Post Office and the old NITEL building, were affected. The Anti-Bomb squad building houses Jimeta Divisional Police station, state investigation Bureau SIB, and the central motor Traffic Division, MTD of the state police command among other arms of the police. The state Commissioner of Police, Ghazali Mohammed, said four policemen were killed as a result of the blast. The blast, he disclosed, was caused by a bomb recovered from Boko Haram insurgents, adding that it exploded in the warehouse used by the Police to store exhibits.

Man Arrested for Assaulting, Inflicting Machete Cuts on Police Officer

The Police in Ebonyi state, February 26, arrested a man, Ikiri Okugo, in Amasiri community in Afikpo North LGA of the state for allegedly assaulting and inflicting severe machete cuts on a police officer. Police Public Relations Officer, George Okafor, who disclosed that the police had received a distress call of a clash between some groups in the area on February 23, 2016 and were investigating the matter when the officer was attacked. According to him, a police team had gone to the home of the prime suspect and knocked at door. But Okugo, who is the father of the alleged kingpin, opened the door and attacked the officer, inflicting deep machete cuts on him. Other officers subdued and arrested him.

Oil Spill Destroys Property in Delta, Bayelsa States

Properties worth several billions of naira have been destroyed in Delta and Bayelsa states following the spillage of about 35,000 barrels of oil from ruptured oil pipelines. The House of Representatives has mandated its Committees on Emergency Management and Disaster to visit the affect areas to ascertain the gravity of the disaster with a view to avoiding future occurrence. The member representing Burutu federal constituency of Delta State, Julius Pondi, February 25, expressed shock over the huge loss of property to the spill. He noted that the report of a recent visit by oil industry stakeholders to the site of the spill revealed a massive devastation and dead fauna, sea and river creatures. He attributed the intermittent ruptures of pipelines to the use of worn out pipes.

Review/Analysis

Murder/assassination incidents took their toll on the society with wanton killings by hoodlums, cult groups and trigger happy cops. The elites, political figures, monarchs and the aged were variously targeted. The police, in trying to check the spate of killings, made some arrest of suspected killers while others remained at large. The law also took its full course on a murderous preacher, who previous death sentence was confirmed by the Supreme Court. These killing were recorded across the various regions of the country.

Robbery activities scaled to an alarming height as victims count their losses. Police authorities remained resolute their battles with armed robbers as they killed some suspects during exchange of gun fire. Members of the public are also urged to be wary as armed criminal now disguise as law enforcement agents to carry out their nefarious activities. The police and other security outfits eventually emerged victorious as they made enormous arrest of suspects. The law also caught up with an armed robber, who was condemned to die by hanging by the court. Armed robbery incidents were witnessed across the nation.

Militancy/maritime incidents took an upward plunge with activities of the militant group becoming frequent. In a bid to halt militant activities, the military troops invaded the south-south region of the country as they went in search of ex-militant war lords. The invasion caused residents to flee their home in panic. Some aggrieved militant group also engaged the soldiers in gun battle with the military with many dead and wounded. The south-south continues to bear the brunt of militant activities.

Kidnap/hostage cases took a downward plunge. Huge ransoms have been demanded to set hostages free, while one hostage was found dead. It was, however, cheering as the police rescued one octogenarian, whose ordeal was orchestrated by a close relative. While the suspect is currently in police custody, the police maintain their search for other accomplices and others who masterminded of kidnap incidents. The south-south region of the country witnessed more of these vile activities.

The authorities continue to urge the public to provide them with useful credible information that could lead to the arrest of suspects and reduction of crime. Let us do our part in keeping the society crime free and safe for all.
