Police Kill 4 Alleged Kidnappers in Gun Battle

Four suspected kidnappers were killed at Kaani in Khana LGA of Rivers State during a fierce gun battle with men of the Rivers State police command. The State Police Commissioner, Musa Kimo, who disclosed this on November 22, said his men stormed the hideout of the kidnappers of the Registrar of Ken Sarowiwa Polytechnic, Bori, Mrs Lilian Davies, when the hoodlums opened fire on them. The Police chief disclosed that during the exchange of fire, his men gunned down four of the kidnappers and successfully rescued the hostage. The police recovered a locally made pistol, one magazine, 25 rounds of 7.62 live ammunition and five cartridges from the hoodlums. Davies was taken hostage on November 11 along Yeghe-Bori road on her way from the office. The state police boss appealed for support from the public to rid the state of miscreants and hoodlums.

Vigilante Group Arrests Kidnapper, Rescues Hostage

A local vigilante group in Ughelli, November 26, smashed a kidnap gang and apprehended one of the suspected kidnappers. The vigilante, known as Bakassi, also rescued their hostage, Chief Agba Edoreh, who is a pensioner. Chief Agba, who had suffered a similar fate some years ago in the hands of kidnappers, was abducted with a yet to be identified victim on November 22 along the Ekuigbo-Warri road in Ughelli. Confirming the rescue of the victim, a senior member of the Ughelli vigilante, said the group, acting on intelligence information, trailed the kidnap gang to Agbarho community, where they engaged the team in a gun battle. According to him, one of the kidnappers was apprehended and has since been handed over to the police while others escaped with gunshot wounds.

Police Rescue Kidnapped 4-Year-Old

The Ogun State Police Command has rescued the four-year-old boy, Steve Kanu, who was kidnapped recently in Abeokuta, and has also arrested the suspects in Enugu. The suspected kidnappers had stormed the home of Dr and Mrs Mucipay Kanu in Abeokuta and forcefully took the boy. The kidnappers were arrested by police operatives in a village in Enugu on November 20. The Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, confirmed the rescue of the boy and the arrest of the suspects. The father of the boy, Mucipay Kanu, who confirmed that his son had been re-united with the family, also disclosed that the kidnappers had demanded N1 million as ransom.

Gunmen Abduct Phone Dealer, Demand N6m as Ransom in Rivers

Unidentified gunmen, November 20, abducted a phone dealer, simply identified as Pastor Peter, in Emohua LGA of Rivers State. The victim was returning from his business at about 8pm when he was attacked at his residence and forcefully taken away by the gunmen. A source revealed that the kidnappers had established contact with his family and were demanding N6 million as ransom for his release.

NSCDC Rescues Suspected Kidnapper

A suspected kidnapper was, November 21, rescued from a mob by men of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Abeokuta, Ogun State. The NSCDC Divisional Office at Osiele received a distress call that an irate mob had attacked a man who allegedly attempted to kidnap a child on his way to school. The suspected kidnapper, who denied the allegation, claimed that he took to his heels when he saw people chasing him with cutlasses.

Human Trafficking Ring Dislodge, 21 Suspects Arrested

The Police in Spanish Catalan region, November 16, launched a large-scale raid against human trafficking and sexual exploitation of women in Barcelona, arresting 21 Nigerians. The suspects -15 men and 6 women- were arrested for forcing Nigerian women into prostitution. The Central Unit against Human Trafficking disclosed that the suspects are part of a criminal organization, known as “Supreme Eiye Confraternity,” that has forced more than 100 women into prostitution since the beginning of 2014. Investigators believe the group may have exploited dozens of women, many of whom were charged large sum of money to be brought to Spain from Nigeria with the promise of a job and a better life.

3 Arrested for Trafficking Babies

The Police at Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos, November 20, arrested three suspected human traffickers for attempting to take two newborn babies out of the country. The babies still had their umbilical cords when the women were arrested. The suspects, Kadijatu Dialo Diawara (39), Yakari Dialo Diawara (41), and Hillary Wafo (43), were intercepted at the international wing of the airport with two babies. It was learned that Kadijatu and Yakari, who were travelling to Mali, were married to two brothers, while the third suspect, Hilary, was at the airport to assist the suspects to board the plane. It was gathered that police sensed foul play as the suspects waiting to board a flight to Mali, refused to breastfeed the babies, who were weeping profusely. Health officials examined the suspects and discovered that neither of them was the biological mother of the babies. It was gathered that Kadijatu Dialo Diawara had been married for 20 years without a child and had come to Nigeria on November 14, 2015 to pick the babies. Her accomplice, Yakari Dialo, denied knowledge of the transaction.

Police Kill 2 Suspected Kidnappers in Rivers

Two suspected kidnappers were, November 23, gunned down by the Police at Umubele waterfront in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. Police spokesman, Ahmad Muhammad, disclosed that the kidnap suspects, who were guarding two hostages when the police stormed their hideout, opened fire on the police, leading to an exchange of fire. He said in the ensuing gun battle, the police shot the two kidnap suspects dead and rescued the two hostages in their custody. The victims, David Eke and Callistus Nnamdi, were kidnapped along Airport road, Port Harcourt. He added that two locally made pistols, four cartridges and charms were recovered from the deceased kidnappers.

Police Arrest Herbalist for Kidnapping and Sexual Abuse of Minors

The Cross River State Police Command, November 16, rescued two girls (both aged 11 years), who were abducted four years ago and turned to sex slaves by a herbalist, Emmanuel Akpan-Okon (42). The girls alleged that the herbalist raped them almost every day during their captivity. Akpan-Okon was arrested by the police following a tip-off that he specialised in the preparation of charms for armed robbers. The state Commissioner of Police, Henry Fadairo, said the rescued kids were abducted from their parents separately from Onitsha, Anambra State, and Auchi, Edo State.  Akpan-Okon confessed that he took the girls because their mothers could not cater for them.

Navy Rescues Kidnapped Woman in Bayelsa

The Commander of the Nigerian Navy Base, Yenagoa, Commodore Yakubu Wanbai, November 27, handed over a woman rescued from kidnappers on Bayelsa waterways to the Bayelsa Police Command. Wanbai handed over the victim, Tokoni TrustGod, to police representatives, CSP James Ejure, from Criminal Investigation Department, and Mr Richard Ogwuche of the Anti-Kidnap Squad of Bayelsa Police Command. Ejure stressed the need for the security agencies to continue to work together to effectively fight crime. He commended the Navy for the feat and assured that the Police would conduct ‘’discrete investigations’’ into the matter with a view to apprehending the alleged kidnappers. Wanbai disclosed that his team got a distress call on that the kidnappers had struck residence of the victim in Angiama-Gbene on November 26, and the gunboat headed to the scene of the incident. The commander further disclosed that the suspected kidnappers, whose speedboat had developed a fault, abandoned their victim and fled on sighting the patrol boat. The woman was rescued and brought to the base, in line with the existing inter-agency cooperation.

Kidnappers demand N10m for Kidnapped daughter of Ex-Delta Council Scribe

Unidentified gunmen, November 22, kidnapped a 10-year-old girl, Avwesuoghene Ishegba.  Avwesuoghene is the daughter of the former scribe of Ethiope East LGA of Delta State, Duke Ishegbe. The girl was forcefully taken while on her way home from her mother’s shop in Eku. The gunmen ambushed the girl after the attempt to kidnap her father failed on November 17. The victim’s father lamented the kidnap of his daughter. Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer, Celestina Kalu, said the police were on top of the situation, noting that the victim’s abductors had demanded N10 million as ransom from her parents. She also disclosed that the police had arrested 13 suspected kidnappers in the last three months at different communities in the state.

3-Year-Old Boy Abducted in Lagos

A 3-year-old Boy identified as Olanrewaju Babalola Obazua, was, November 22, abducted by unknown persons. The boy was reportedly abducted while he was playing with other children in front of their house on Ladipo Street in Apapa, Lagos. The victim’s mother, Mrs Maria Obazua, noticed the boy had gone missing at about 6pm when she came out to invite him to have his bath. The case was reported to the Police.

Agbara Bank Robbery Gang Leader Killed in Delta State

The leader of the armed robbery gang that raided commercial banks in Lagos and Ogun States and terrorised residents has been killed. Operatives from the Inspector General of Police Special Intelligence Responses Team (SIT), led by Abba Kyari, trailed the robbers to Sapele in Delta State, where the leader was killed. The gang’s leader, identified as Kelly Foto, is alleged to be the notorious Kelvin of Kokori, who had terrorised the entire South-South and South-East in the past. It was revealed that the gang leader was arrested at a marriage ceremony at Peemos Hotel in Sapele. He was about taking his leave when men of the Department of State Service (DSS) who were on his trail, shot his two legs crippling him.

OPC Arrests 3 Suspected Thieves in Kirikiri

Members of Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC), have arrested three suspected thieves at different locations in Kirikiri Town, Lagos. One of the suspects, Chinedu Okoye (38), was caught siphoning diesel from a truck parked along Kirikiri Road. The second suspect, Tayo Iouka, was caught alongside the third suspect, Promise Olawale, when they tried to steal the shaft from a parked vehicle. The leader of OPC, Ayode Kakajisonu, disclosed that they had been receiving reports from residents of the town about robbery and rape almost on a daily bases, so they embarked constant patrol of the area. He added that the patrol had been successful so far.

Police Arrest 18 Robbery Suspects, Cultists, Vandals

The Ebonyi State Police Command, November 24, said it had arrested 18 suspected armed robbers, cultists and vandals. The command also said it recovered three AK-47 rifles, four locally-made pistols and live ammunition, among others from the suspects. Commissioner of Police (CP), Peace Abdallah, who explained that the suspects were arrested at different points in the state, noted that hoodlums inflicted bullet wounds and machete cuts on a police patrol team before snatching three AK 47 rifles from the team. The three police AK47 rifles were recovered with 13 live ammunition. The suspects confessed that they had planned to block Lokoja/Abuja highway to rob innocent citizens before the command aborted their planned operations.

Suspected Arrested as Police Kill 5 Suspected Robbers in Shootout

The Police in Lagos, November 25, killed five suspected armed robbers and arrested one with bullets wounds. The suspects had engaged policemen in a shootout at Ajah, where they were killed. According to the police, they got information that the suspects were operating at Abule Parapo in Elemoro area of Ajah around 2am, ad quickly mobilized to the area. The suspects engaged the police in a shootout as soon as they saw them. Two locally made double barrel shot guns, one cutlass and iron cutter was recovered from them. The gang had been terrorising residents of Ajah, robbing and raping women, a source disclosed.

Four Ogun Bank Robbers Arrested

Four suspected members of the armed robbery gang that unleashed terror on commercial banks in the Agbara area of Ogun State on November 19 have confessed to carting away N28m during the operation. It was gathered that the suspected gang members were arrested by the police in Sapele, Delta State on November 21. The suspects confessed in their statements that they were also responsible for the killings of seven operatives of the Department of State Service on September 16, 2015. It was learnt that the suspects, who were picked up by the Inspector General of Police Special Intelligence Response Team, engaged the policemen in a shootout during which a policeman was killed. The robbers, numbering 40, had stormed four commercial banks in the Agbara area of Ogun State killing a corporal identified as Kadiri Aliyu, and making away with millions of naira from Zenith Bank. The Ogun State Police spokesperson, Muyiwa Adejobi, confirmed the arrest. He added that weapons were recovered from the arrested suspects.

Robbers Kill Ex-Naval Officer in Lagos

Two gunmen, November 25, shot dead a 74-year-old retired Navy officer, Commodore Peter Ikre, in Festac Town, Lagos. It was gathered that the gunmen, who succeeded in robbing Ikre, had trailed him from a bank before they attacked him while he was parking his car. One of the gunmen reportedly alighted from a motorbike and shot severally the septuagenarian. He was shot about 12 times, because we found 15 expended ammunition casings at the scene. Sympathizers used the victim’s phone to contact his family member, who later brought some policemen to the scene.

Police Arrest Robbers after Attack on Toddler

The police in Lagos have arrested two robbery suspects ─ Olalekan Durojaiye (20) and Femi Kromoga (27) – for attempting to rob a woman, Mary Nwanfor of her handbag and causing grievous injuries to her two-year-old child, Samuel, on November 21. The robbers snatched the toddler and threw him to the ground after his mother resisted their attempt to dispossess her of her handbag. The suspects met their waterloo when a mob gave them a chase and apprehended them as they attempted to speed off with the woman’s bag. They were said to have been beaten to a pulp before being handed over to the police. The suspects were arraigned before a Shasha Magistrate’s Court on November 23 on two counts of stealing and causing grievous harm. They pleaded not guilty to the offences. The magistrate, Mrs. J.O. Adeyemi, granted them bail in the sum of N50, 000 with two sureties in like sum. The matter was adjourned till December 11, 2015.

3 Dead, Several Injured as Rival Cult Groups Clash in Osun

Three people were feared dead while some others sustained injuries at separate clashes involving two rival cult groups in Osogbo, Osun State. Security sources said two leading members of rival cult groups started the fight that later led to the death of one of their members at a popular pub located along Iwo/Osogbo road on November 19. A source, however, revealed that the clash was a result of power struggle and retaliation over an earlier assault on a gang leader, who was beaten up after he forced his way into a pub against the advice of those in the premises.

Police Arrest Suspected Cultists in Ogun State

The Ogun State Police Command, November 23, paraded eight members of an armed robbery gang, who were arrested on November 17, for robbery at Ogba, Ago-Ijoko, in the Ado Odo/Ota LGA of Ogun state. The suspects are Segun Ogundipe, Olamikan Makinde, Adenekan Sunkanmi, Afeez Oladipupo, Azeez Ologundade, Taiwo Ade, Tijani Yusuf and Oluwaseun Osiloye. The leader, Ogundipe, confessed that his group had robbed some residents in the area of their handsets and other valuables. The police also paraded four robbery suspects who allegedly specialised in snatching cars around Itele, in the Ado-Odo/Ota LGA and the Egbeda area of Lagos State. The leader of the gang, Jimoh Adeyemi, confessed that they had about 38 cars and had sold them to car dealers in the Republic of Benin.

Police Nab 19-Year Old, Alleged Cult Leader in Delta

The Police in Delta State, November 20, said that they have arrested the leader of a notorious cult group allegedly terrorising Obiaruku and environs. The suspect, identified as Ikechukwu Azubuike (19), allegedly terrorized and led his group to kill several persons in the area. Residents of the area expressed joy that the cult leader had been arrested. He claimed that the alleged cult leader had tormented residents in Obiaruku community for a long time.

Three Killed in Lagos Cult Clash

Three persons were, November 22, killed in a clash between rival cults groups at Ajosegbemi in the Somolu LGA of Lagos State. The deceased persons were clubbed to death. It was gathered that members of Aiye fraternity had gone on the rampage to avenge the death of a member’s brother, Azeez Akinwumi, who was killed by some Eye cult members. It took a combined team of policemen from Alade, Pedro and Onipanu divisions to stop the violence. The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Joe Offor, confirmed the deadly attack, adding that several others were injured.

NDLEA Arrests Suspected Drug Baron, Intercepts 576kgs of Narcotics

The Special Enforcement Team (SET) of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), November 21, arrested a suspected drug baron, Tochukwu Harris Ubah, who is believed to be coordinating a large volume of methamphetamine and ephedrine distribution in the country. He was apprehended after intense undercover operations in connection with illegal exportation of 576kgs of narcotics to South Africa through Apapa Port. The drug made up of 266kg of methamphetamine and 310kgs of ephedrine valued at 4.6 billion naira were hidden inside noodles, cereals and palm oil. The 42-year-old has a company, Visoch Resources, Limited which he uses as a cover for his clandestine drug business. SET commander, Sunday Zirangey, disclosed that the suspect was arrested at the old local section of the Murtala Muhammed Airport upon arrival from Enugu.

2 Nabbed with 20 Bags of Cannabis

Two suspected smugglers, Ismaila Aliu and Edwin Igwe, have been arrested by men of the Nigeria Police Border Patrol Unit at the Seme-Badagry area of Lagos State while attempting to smuggle 20 bags of dried weeds, suspected to be cannabis into the country. It was gathered that the suspects were apprehended at Boglo Sea Beach, near Seme border, when a boat dropped off the bags of cannabis. The Commander of the Border Patrol Unit in Seme, Patrick Ejedawe, who received an intelligence report on the activities of smugglers, stormed the beach with his men and apprehended the suspects, while their colleagues escaped. It was also gathered that three motorcycles used for smuggling and a 250 horsepower boat engine were also recovered.  The commander confirmed the arrest on November 23.

Court Remands Suspected Drug Trafficker in Prison

A Federal High Court in Lagos, November 25, ordered the remand of one Eze Ajah (34) at the Ikoyi prisons. The accused, who was charged by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on a charge of drug peddling, told the court that he did not understand English. Justice M.N. Yunusa, ordered the prosecution to produce an interpreter at the next hearing. The case was adjourned till January 26, while the accused was remanded in Ikoyi Prisons. The accused was alleged to have committed the offence on August 28 when he was arrested at the departure hall of the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos, during the outward clearance of an Ethiopian Airline flight. He was caught with 3.115 kilogrammes of cocaine.

NDLEA Seizes N2.5m Indian Hemp, Others, in Zaria

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) said it had seized Indian hemp and some other drugs worth N2.5 million in Zaria, Kaduna State. The Zonal Commander of the agency in Zaria, Sunday Azinge, November 27, disclosed that the agency had also arrested 17 suspects including a 70-year-old man in connection with the seizure. He said the intercepted drugs include; 96 bags of cannabis valued at N25,000 each and 67 compressed wraps valued at N7,000 each.

Bomb Blast Kills Six Women at IDP Screening Centre

Six women were, November 22, killed during the screening of new intakes of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Maiduguri, Borno State. Chairman of Borno State Emergency Agency (SEMA), Ahmed Satomi, said the incident occurred around Muna garage during the screening of persons who had fled Dikwa area of the state. According to him, people fleeing from Dikwa and its environs were screened at Muna garage, the entry point into Maiduguri to prevent the insurgents from mingling with them. A woman with an explosive device strapped on her rammed into others causing the death of six women including herself. Six other persons were injured, he revealed. He added that two men suspected to be members of Boko Haram were arrested. The Borno State Police Commissioner, Aderemi Opadokun, confirmed the incident.

Nigeria Ranks 3rd as World Most Terrorised Country
…Boko Haram Deadliest Terrorist Group

Nigeria has been ranked third of the 162 countries of the world that have been worst hit by terrorist attacks, according to the 2015 Global Terrorism Index. Nigeria come 3rd after Iraq and Afghanistan that ranked first and second respectively. Pakistan and Syria are ranked fourth and fifth after Nigeria. The report, released on November 16, 2015 by the Institute for Economics and Peace, listed Boko Haram is the most deadly terrorist group in the world. The Institute for Economics and Peace is an independent, non-partisan, non-profit think tank with offices in Sydney, New York and Mexico City. The 2015 GTI report said Boko Haram, in 2014, was also able to spread outside Nigeria to launch two deadly attacks in neighbouring Cameroon, killing 530 people.

Boko Haram Kills 7 in Attack on Fika

Suspected Boko Haram members, November 20, launched an attack on Kwanti village in Fika LGA of Yobe State, killing 7 persons. A witness, Isa Dafa, confirmed that the insurgents stormed the town at about 11:40pm, shooting sporadically. Fika is about 100 kilometres to the south of the Yobe state and borders Nafada LGA of Gombe state. The Commander, 27 Task Force Brigade, Col. Dahiru Bako, confirmed the attack he said the attack came barely day after arrested three Boko Haram insurgents in Jakusko while two others were arrested in Damaturu, Yobe State.

Suspected Boko Haram Militants Kill 10 in Cameroon

A suicide attack by suspected members of Islamist terrorists group, Boko Haram, killed at least 10 people, including the bomber, over the border in the Far North region of Cameroon on November 21. Boko Haram used Cameroon’s impoverished Far North to stockpile supplies and recruits until the government crackdown in 2014. Cameroon is also in an 8,700-strong regional force led by Nigeria against the militants, expected to be operational by the end of the year.

Police Circulate Help-Lines in Lagos

The Police in Lagos have circulated some help-lines to improve service delivery to Nigerians and to make policing more transparent. Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in Lagos, Joseph Offor, November 22, said that the help-lines were circulated to improve on the internal accountability mechanisms of the Police. The help-lines: Provost Marshal–09053872207; Control Room–09053872208; and X-Squad–09053872209” were released to the members of the public, who may need the services of the police.  The help-lines are also for the public to make any complaint that will assist in nipping in the bud, any act of misconduct regarding any policeman in Lagos State.

Police Arrest Suspect, Invite Others over Killing of APC Chieftain in Bayelsa

The police in Bayelsa state have arrested one person, Promise Meshak (23), over the November 11 murder of an All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain, Andrew June, in Ekeremor, Ekeremor LGA of the state. June was stabbed to death while returning from Ekeremor town after attending the APC governorship campaign rally. Police spokesman, Asinim Butswat, confirmed that the prime suspect, Promise Meshak, had been apprehended, while 17 others were invited in connection with the murder. Bayelsa State Governor, Seriake Dickson, had condemned the killing of Andrew June in Oweigbene community in Ekeremor LGA of the state. The governor, who said he was deeply moved by the death of the man, called on the security agencies in the state to urgently investigate and fish out the perpetrators of the dastardly act.

Drug Dealer Stabs Man to Death

A drug dealer is on the run after he allegedly stabbed a bricklayer, Onyekaozuru Ezeji, to death in Umunakanu, Ehime Mbano LGA of Imo State. It was gathered that Ezeji was killed after he went to the suspect’s house to recover a debt owed him. The suspect, said to be an Indian hemp dealer, threatened to summarily deal with Ezeji if he did not leave his premises immediately. A scuffle ensued during which the suspect stabbed Ezeji with a knife. An eyewitness said the Indian hemp dealer quickly invited a commercial motorcycle operator to assist him move the wounded man to a nearby hospital. But the victim died before getting to the hospital, following which the duo dumped the corpse on the road side and fled. Two persons, including the younger brother of the fleeing suspect and the commercial motorcycle operator, have been arrested by the police, while the main suspect is still at large.

2 Vigilante Members Arrested for Attempted Murder

Two members of a vigilance group in Anambra State have been arrested by the police over their alleged attempt to kill five farmers at Igbariam Farm Settlement. The Police arrested the suspects as they allegedly dragged their victims to the dreaded Nengo Akpakwu Ifite Nteje Shrine for the purpose of sacrificing them to the deity. According to the report, a gang of nine persons allegedly invaded the house of one Paul Obiefuna in the farm, where he was working with his two sons and two labourers. They dragged them to the shrine and tried to kill and use them for sacrifice before the police stormed the area and rescued them. Obiefuna disclosed that the nine-man gang came with various kinds of weapons, including guns, machetes and sticks. He disclosed that one of my sons, who escaped during the operation, contacted the police for their rescue.

Touts Kill Lagos Driver over Loading Fee

A 30-year-old Lagos driver, Samuel Adamo, has been stabbed to death in the Oshodi area of Lagos State. Adamo was attacked in one of the motor parks in the Oshodi-under-bridge area, while calling passengers into his bus after some motor park touts approached him for the ‘loading fee’, which the deceased allegedly declined paying, saying there was no passenger in his bus. This reportedly led to an altercation and fight between the victim and the men. Three of the touts allegedly stabbed Adamo in the neck, chest and stomach. He reportedly bled to death. It was gathered that the police arrested one of the suspects, Teslim Tajudeen (21). He claimed not to be responsible for the death, adding that he only stabbed Adamo in the chest. Man Remanded in Prison for Raping 13-Year-Old

An Ota Magistrates’ Court in Ogun, November 23, remanded a 22-year-old man, Akeremisi Ola, in prison custody over alleged rape of a 13-year-old girl.  The Magistrate, Temitope Adebutu, said the accused should be remanded in prison pending advice from the State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP). The prosecutor, Sergeant Rosemary Samson, had told the court that the accused and five others still at large, committed the offence on November 4 at about 3.00pm at his residence when they had unlawful carnal knowledge of the girl.

Security Man Docked for Alleged Rape, Threat to life

A 52-year-old security man, Friday Ekanem-Ekam, was, November 23, arraigned before an Igbosere magistrate’s court for allegedly raping his neighbour’s 11-year-old girl and threatening to kill the victim’s mother. The defendant is facing a three-count charge bordering on defilement and threat to life. The defendant was docked before Magistrate B. B. Balogun. The prosecutor, Inspector Asu Feddy, told the court that the incident took place between December 2013 and November 6, 2015. He said the defendant unlawfully and indecently dealt with the victim by inserting his fingers into her anus. The prosecutor said the suspect called the victim’s mother on his phone, and threatened to kill her if she refused to withdraw the case against him from the police. When the charges were read to the defendant, he pleaded not guilty. Magistrate Balogun granted him bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case till January 21, 2016.

Man Remanded in Prison for Raping Minor

An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State, November 23, remanded a 27-year-old man, Friday Freedom, in prison for allegedly raping a 15-year-old girl. The Chief Magistrate, Tajudeen Elias, remanded the accused in the Kirikiri Prison custody and adjourned the case till November 28, 2015, for ruling on bail application. The prosecutor, Sergeant Jimah Iseghede, told the court that the offence was committed on November 21, 2015, at the accused’s residence. The prosecutor explained to the court that the accused invited the girl to his house for something and raped her. The accused pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Man, 30, in Court over Alleged Child Rape

A 30-year man was, on November 24, charged before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly raping a child. The accused, Peter Ekom, is facing a charge of rape. The prosecutor, Inspector Simon Imhonwa, told the court that the accused, who was a co-tenant with the minor’s parents, committed the offence on November 3 at their residence. He alleged that the accused lured the 11-year old girl into his room and forcefully raped her. The accused pleaded not guilty to the charge. The Magistrate, Bola Osunsanmi, admitted the accused to bail in the sum of N300, 000 with two sureties in like sum. She ordered that the sureties must be working in reputable companies and must show evidences of tax payment. Osunsanmi adjourned the case to January 13, 2016.

Man, 35, Jailed 7 Years for Rape

A 35-year-old man, Stanley Edomwonyi, was on November 25 sentenced to seven years imprisonment for raping a nine-year-old girl. The State Counsel, Mrs O.R. Ewemade, told the Court that the convict committed the crime on October 24, 2013 at Ugbowo in Benin City, Edo State. The convict was charged with rape which contravened Section 218 of the criminal Code cap 48 vol. II laws of the defunct Bendel State of Nigeria 1976 as applicable in Edo. The Magistrate, Mrs Igho Braimoh, ruled that the convict was guilty as charged and sentenced him to seven years imprisonment with hard labour.

Factory Worker Rapes 4-Year-Old Girl in Lagos

The Police in Lagos State have arrested one Emmanuel Umanah (21) for allegedly raping a 4-year-old-girl. The suspect allegedly committed the crime in his one-room apartment on Opeoluwa Street, Mosafejo-Amukoko area of Ajegunle. It was learned that the police arrested Umanah following a report from the girl’s grandmother that the factory worker, who was her neighbour, allegedly lured and raped her granddaughter. The grandmother disclosed that she had been searching for her granddaughter when another little girl told her that she was in Umanah’s. The grandmother alleged that no one answered when she knocked, so she pushed the door open and found her grandchild naked and covered up with semen. She quickly raised an alarm, which attracted neighbours. A medical test conducted in a nearby hospital confirmed that the child was raped as she had bruises and semen in her genitals. The suspect, who has been arrested, confessed that was the first time he was doing such.

Landlord Rapes Tenant’s 4-Year-Old Daughter

A 60-year-old landlord has been arrested over the alleged rape of a 14-year-old girl daughter of his tenant in Lagos State. It was gathered that the 14-year-old girl almost died after she passed out a few minutes after being raped. The prompt response of residents of Fasanya Street, where the incident happened, however, averted a tragedy. The victim reported that she had been raped three times by the landlord. The victim’s mother, Elizabeth, disclosed that said the family never suspected the landlord, who had been very helpful. The Coordinator of the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team, Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, said the victim had been taken to the Mirabel Medical Centre where a case of rape was established. The Police Public Relations Officer, Joe Offor, confirmed the incident.

Polytechnic Suspends 3 Students over Illegal Possession of Firearms

The management of Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, has suspended three students of the institution over alleged unlawful possession of live cartridges and charms. A statement signed by the Deputy Registrar (Information and Publication Division) of the institution, Alh Moshood Amuda, said that the institution was determined to maintain conducive learning environment. The spokesman of the state Police Command, Ajayi Okasanmi, however, said that only one suspect with three live cartridges was arrested.

65-Year-Old Businessman Commits Suicide in Kano

A 65-year-old man, Alhaji Ado Maisumunti, November 24, killed himself with a knife in Kano, Kano State. According to an eyewitness, the deceased was sighted using a sharp knife to cut his throat, but before people could do anything, he had bled to death. Maisumunti was a successful businessman before his death. The Kano State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Magaji Majiya, confirmed the story. He added that the police had commenced investigation.

Police Raid Illegal Arms Factory, Arrest Woman, Neighbours

Operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) at the Delta State Police Command, November 21, raided illegal an arms manufacturing workshop in Obiaruku, Ukwuani LGA and arrested a middle-aged woman and two of her neighbours. Police Public Relations Officer, Celestina Kalu, who confirmed the arrest of the suspects, said the detectives acted on a tip-off, and arrested Patience Okoh and two of her neigbhours. According to her, the SARS operatives uncovered many cut-to-size guns, electric cutting machines, filling machines, and generating sets used for the manufacturing of guns. Kalu said that efforts were being made to arrest the principal operator of the manufacturing company, saying that the SARS detectives also recovered charms put into various cellophane bags at the place.

Farmer Jailed 39 Months for Assault

A 35-year-old farmer, Adebayo Olaniyi, was, November 24, sentenced to 39 months imprisonment by an Odo-Owa Area Court in Kwara, for biting-off the lower lip of one Bode Arilewo. Olaniyi was arraigned on a two-count charge of assault and causing hurt. The convict had on his first arraignment in September, pleaded not guilty to the charges. The Judge, Abolade Banigbe, sentenced Olaniyi to three months imprisonment with an option of N1,000 fine on the first charge, and 3 years imprisonment on the second charge with an option of N13, 000 fine.  He said that the sentence was to serve as a deterrent to others. Banigbe said that the action of the convict could constitute nuisance to the larger society.

Mother in Court for Abandoning Children

A 40-year-old mother, Adebisi Adeeko, who allegedly abandoned her two children, ages 13 and 15, at the Ilupeju railway line, Lagos was, November 24, charged before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.  The Prosecutor, Inspector Simon Imhonwa, told the court that the offence was committed on August 10. He alleged that the accused deliberately abandoned her children at the railway line crossing at Ilupeju area in Lagos, thereby exposing the minors to harm and exploitation. The prosecutor said the case was reported at Alakara Police Station for Juveniles and subsequently to the Ministry of Youth and Social Development. The prosecutor said the offence contravened Section 276 of the Criminal Law of Lagos 2011. The accused, however, denied committing the offence. The Magistrate, Mrs Bola Osunsanmi, however, admitted the accused to bail in the sum of N50, 000 with one surety in like sum.

Review/Analysis

Kidnap/hostage cases took the lead this week as kidnappers carried out their nefarious activities across the country. The police, with the help other security outfits and vigilante groups, successfully engaged and killed some kidnappers in gun battles. Hostages were rescued while some suspects were arrested. However, some victims remain in captivity, including a 10-year-old girl as the kidnappers demand huge sums as ransom for their release. The police have assured that they are working tirelessly to apprehend the kidnappers and rescue such hostages unhurt.

Robbery maintained its place on the crime index as criminal gangs carried out their dastardly acts across various regions of the country with the killing of a naval officer and innocent civilians. The also made major arrest, across state borders, of daredevil armed robbery suspects. Some were killed in shootouts with the police. Many suspects remain at large. The south-west and south-east recorded more of these incidents.

Rape cases, in recent times, have become rampant, especially rape of minors. Some of the culprits have been arrested and charged to court. The prevalence remains worrisome as young girls are continually defiled by close relatives and trusted persons.

Murder/assassination took a downward plunge, as the security agencies continue to make arrests of suspects across the country. While incidents of lone killings abound, the authorities continue to grapple with investigations and a hunt for the fleeing suspects. However, arrested killers have been charged them to court.
