Review/Analysis

Terrorism topped the index. Boko Haram insurgents have remained relentless in their attacks. However, they appear increasingly desperate and have resolved to the use of helpless minors to carry out deadly suicide attacks on crowded places like markets and motor parks. High casualties were recorded in most attacks. The Nigerian military continues its battle against the insurgents and successfully repelled some attacks, destroyed some of the terrorists’ camps and killed a number of them. Nigerian has the support of some West African military in the battle to put a complete stop to the activities of Boko Haram. The north-east region remains the centre of these cruel acts.

While Kidnap/hostage incidents appeared high on the index, it is noteworthy that most of the incidents were nipped by government security forces that made good arrests of suspects and rescued hostages. Some of the suspects were killed during exchange of gun fire with security operatives. It is also commendable that local vigilante also stepped up their game with the rescue of a stolen baby. However, some hostages remain in captivity, while the police have continued manhunt for fleeing suspects with the resolve the safely rescue those in captivity.

Murder/assassination took a downward leap. However, pockets of very brutal cases, where children were the targets, were on record. The authorities remain resolute to bring perpetrators to book. These incidents cut across different regions of the country

Robbery and gang incidents took a nose dive as there were only pockets of robbery and gang incident. The authorities have made some arrest, especially economic vandals and illegal bunkerers. It is also reassuring that neighbours have displayed goodwill as they mobilised to stamp out criminality in the areas by ensuring the apprehending of suspects. Major criminal suspects and gang leaders were arrested while some suspects remain large.
We continually urge persons resident in Nigeria to be security conscious. It is the responsibility of everyone to be a neighbourhood watch. Take cognizance of your environment to keep you and your neighbour safe. Remain law abiding and report any perceived threat to the appropriate authorities.
