Jordan’s Foreign Minister, Nasser Judeh, confirmed his release, saying he was already on his way back to his homeland on Tuesday. He gave no further details about the circumstances of the release. The incident came a day after a boat carrying illegal migrants sank off the coast of Tripoli, Libya, killing at least 40 people. Southern Italy — especially tiny Lampedusa, which is the closest Italian island to Africa — is a frequent destination for refugees seeking to enter European Union countries from Africa. The Italian military has rescued about 2,000 migrants in the last five days alone, Italy’s navy said on Monday. Tens of thousands of people are rescued from the Mediterranean each year.

Three Killed in Deadly Attack on Thai Protest Camp

Three people have been killed and more than 20 others injured in an attack on an anti-government protest camp in the Thai capital, officials say. Witnesses reported explosions and gunfire on Thursday at a protest camp at Bangkok’s Democracy Monument. Protesters have been pressing the Senate to replace the cabinet with an appointed administration. Later on Thursday, they forced a meeting between the government and the Election Commission to be abandoned. The government is trying to organise a new general election in July, after protesters disrupted the previous election in parts of the country. A crowd led by Suthep Thaugsuban, head of the anti-government movement, broke into the Air Force base where the meeting between acting Prime Minister Niwatthamrong Boonsongphaisan and the commission was being held. The attack on protesters comes days after former Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra was removed by a Thai court. Police identified two of the victims as a protester who was asleep and a protest guard who was shot.

Anti-World Cup Protests Hit Brazil

Riot police in Brazil have fired tear gas to disperse thousands of protesters in Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro who marched against the cost of hosting the football World Cup. Some demonstrators hurled stones while other burned tyres and blocked roads. They say they are angry that billions of dollars are being spent on the world’s most prestigious football tournament, rather than social projects and housing. Protests also took place in many other cities, including the capital Brasilia. Teachers and civil servants, among others, were also on strike across Brazil. In Rio, aerial images showed hundreds of people marching in rush-hour traffic on a main thoroughfare. The city will host the final match of the World Cup on 13 July. Protesters there and in Sao Paulo, Brazil’s biggest city, clashed with police before beginning to disperse. The number of people on the streets was much lower than during similar protests last year. Some of those taking part, however, promised the demonstrations would get bigger and more frequent as the World Cup gets closer. The tournament is due to kick off on 12 June.

Christian Woman Sentenced to Death for Refusing Islam in Sudan

A Sudanese judge on Thursday sentenced a Christian woman to hang for apostasy, in a ruling which Britain denounced as “barbaric”. Born to a Muslim father, the woman was convicted under the Islamic sharia law that has been in force in Sudan since 1983 and outlaws conversions on pain of death. Meriam Yahia Ibrahim Ishag, 27, is married to a Christian and eight months pregnant, human rights activists say. Judge Abbas Mohammed Al-Khalifa addressing her by her father’s Muslim name, Adraf Al-Hadi Mohammed Abdullah, also sentenced Ishag to 100 lashes for “adultery”. Under Sudan’s interpretation of sharia, a Muslim woman cannot marry a non-Muslim man and any such relationship is regarded as adulterous. Britain’s Minister for Africa, Mark Simmonds, said he was “truly appalled” at the death penalty decision. Ishag, dressed in traditional Sudanese robes with her head covered, reacted without emotion when Abbas delivered the verdict at a court in the Khartoum district of Haj Yousef where many Christians live. Sudan has an Islamist government but, other than floggings, extreme sharia law punishments have been rare. “The fact that a woman has been sentenced to death for her religious choice, and to flogging for being married to a man of an allegedly different religion is appalling and abhorrent,” said Amnesty International’s Sudan researcher, Manar Idriss. Amnesty said Ishag was raised as an Orthodox Christian, her mother’s religion, because her Muslim father was absent.
