Six Dead, Dozens Injured In Kenya Bomb Attacks

At least six people have been killed and up to 25 injured after three bombs were thrown in a busy part of the predominantly-Somali area of Kenya’s capital, Nairobi. The blasts on Monday targeted roadside food stalls and restaurants in the Eastleigh suburb of the city, known as “Little Mogadishu” for its large immigrant population. The first hit a roadside where women were selling food. Two more were thrown into separate restaurants. Most of the victims were believed to have died in one of the restaurants. No group or individual has claimed the attacks. However in the past, such attacks in the area have been blamed on Somalia’s al-Shabab armed group. Kenya’s president, Uhuru Kenyatta, is under increasing pressure to secure the capital. The government, had last week, ordered all refugees, most of whom are Somali, to leave urban areas and head to two designated refugee camps. The order followed the deaths of six people in a gun attack on a church service a week ago in Mombasa.

Former Israel PM Convicted of Bribery

A Tel Aviv court, on Monday, found former premier, Ehud Olmert, guilty of bribery linked to a Jerusalem property development, in one of the worst corruption scandals in Israeli history. At a hearing presided over by Judge David Rosen, Olmert was convicted on two counts of bribery, making him the first former premier to be convicted of the offence. The trial, which included 16 defendants and took place over two years, was linked to the construction of the massive Holyland residential complex when Olmert served as the city’s mayor. In 2010, Olmert was named the key suspect in the so-called Holyland affair on suspicion that he received hundreds of thousands of shekels for helping developers get the construction project past various legal and planning obstacles. The towering construction project, which dominates the city’s skyline, is seen as a major blot on the landscape and widely reviled as a symbol of high-level corruption. Olmert’s spokesman, Jacob Galanti, vowed to appeal.

Six Killed as Suicide Bomber Attacks Afghan Interior Ministry

A suicide bomber wearing the Afghan security forces uniform has detonated himself at the gate of the Interior Ministry in central Kabul, killing at least six police officers. The ministry confirmed the deaths from Wednesday’s attack. The Taliban has claimed responsibility for the attack, saying that the bomber had penetrated a “third ring of security” at the ministry. The Afghan capital is on high alert ahead of an April 5 presidential election which Taliban insurgents have vowed to disrupt.

Soldiers Hunt Escaped Inmates After Earth Quake Hit Parts of Chile

Chile’s army has been deployed to the northern city of Iquique after some 300 inmates escaped from a women’s jail following an 8.2-magnitude earthquake. Officials said about 26 had so far been captured since the quake on Tuesday. Chile’s President, Michelle Bachelet, has declared disaster areas in the northern regions of Arica and Parinacota and Tarapaca. At least six people are known to have died and tens of thousands evacuated. There have been power cuts, fires and landslides as dozens of aftershocks – including a 6.2 tremor – continued through the night. But although waves of up to 2.1m (about 6ft) hit some areas tsunami warnings in several areas have now been lifted. It was not clear exactly how the women inmates escaped from the prison in Iquique. But Interior Minister, Rodrigo Penailillo, said a military plane of 100 anti-riot police was being flown to work alongside 300 soldiers.

Ebola Outbreak: Death Toll Hits 80 in Guinea

The Ebola death toll in Guinea has risen to 80, while 122 suspected cases have been registered, health authorities said on Tuesday. Medical charity, Medecins Sans Frontieres warned that the outbreak was ‘unprecedented’ because the spread of the disease across Guinea made it very difficult to control. President Alpha Conde announced a ‘health emergency’, but snubbed Guinea’s northern neighbour, Senegal, which closed its borders to protect its population from the virus, for causing panic. In Liberia, to Guinea’s south-east, at least two people died from the virus. However, the health ministry announced at least 11 suspected cases last week. Ebola is one of the most contagious viral diseases known, often resulting in death.

Chad to Pull Troops from CAR

Chad is to pull its peacekeeping troops from an African Union mission in the Central African Republic (CAR) in protest at claims that they aided rebels. A statement from the Chadian foreign ministry said its troops had been criticised despite their sacrifices. Chad has contributed roughly 850 soldiers to a 6,000-strong contingent. Its forces have been accused of siding with Muslim rebels, whose expulsion of the CAR government last year triggered a wave of religious violence.
