Two sisters hew brother to death in Calabar

Sisters have been detained by the Police for allegedly hacking their eldest brother, Kokoette Effiom Effiong, to death. The incident happened when following the disagreement over the sharing of proceeds from the sale of their late father’s land at Akpabuyo. The suspects were arrested and will be charged to court after the police had concluded investigation on the matter.

9 burnt in mysterious gunpowder explosion

Nine persons were have been severely burnt on different parts of their bodies following a mysterious explosion from a canon gun known as “Okpalali” at Ekwetekwe community of Umuezeoka in Ezza North Local government area of Ebonyi state. The tragic incident during the burial ceremony of a community member accompanied with intermittent shooting of the cannon gun in order to enliven the occasion turned sour, when a native who was preparing to shot the gun failed to appropriately use an iron to press down the gun powder into the canister, incidentally made the gun powder in the canister to strike the cannon, igniting a fire which led to an explosion that burnt the nine persons, including children in the area. The victims who were in a critical condition when they were rushed to the Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki, FETHA had been referred to the Orthopaedic hospital, Enugu for thorough medical treatment.

Couple arrested for selling new born twins for N200, 000 each

A couple based in Asaba have been arrested for allegedly selling their new born twins for N200, 000 each. While the buyer of the twins based in Lagos and a Social Welfare Officer who allegedly brokered the transaction have equally been arrested by the Delta State Police.  The babies recovered and handed over to the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare Asaba for proper care.  All four accused persons pleaded not guilty to the charges and were admitted to bail. Although the crime allegedly committed seemed heinous, the magistrate exercised his discretion by granting them bail but with stringent conditions. The accused couple were granted bail to the tune of N200,000 each and in like sum, a responsible surety who must be under domicile within the jurisdiction of the court and must be a civil servant of not less than 10 years either in the Federal Government, state or local government level employment.

Armed robber kill one in Delta

A suspected gang of robbers shot a middle man identified as Mr. Barnabas at Ovwian, Udu Local Government Area Delta State. The deceased was returning from an outing at about 8 p.m when he was accosted at his doorstep by the two robbers on their way out after stabbing yet-to-be identified neighbour of Barnabas. The robbers on their way out of the compound asked Barnabas who was about entering his apartment of his handsets but he refused to surrender it and even dispossessed one of the robbers of his cutlass, the other with a gun shot him in the stomach and ran way. Effort by doctors at a private clinic in Ovwian metropolis to save Barnabas’ life proved abortive.  The state Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Mr Lucky Uyabeme, confirmed the incident, adding: “No arrest has been made. Student to die for robbing colleague of N2,000

23-year old student has been sentenced to death by Ogwashi-Uku High Court by hanging for robbing another student of N2, 000 at gunpoint in Delta State. The convict was arraigned on a four-count charge of conspiracy to commit armed robbery, armed robbery and illegal possession of firearms punishable under sections 1 (2)a and 3 (1) of the Robbery and Firearms (Special Provisions) Act Cap R.II Vol. 14 laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.

Landlord docked for N12.9m theft

Ikeja Magistrate Court arraigned a 55 year-old landlord, Dotun Osinsanya for allegedly stealing N12.9 million belonging to one Tunji Komolafe and Victor Chilaka and also locking up their office. The police prosecutor, Samson Ekikere, informed the court that the alleged incident occurred on March 20, 2013 at about 11a.m at 27, Adeleke Street in Ikeja area of Lagos.The defendant had pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge levelled against him by the police. However, Magistrate Makanju granted him bail in the sum of N1 million with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the matter to May 24, 2013.

Fuel tanker fire razes buildings in Ibadan

Residents of Omitowoju area of Ibadan experienced a fire outbreak, due to lost in control by the tanker driver, emptied the 33,000 litres of fuel which immediately caught fire. Men from the state fire service rushed to the scene after a distress call was made, with other security agents directing the movement of the people in the area. No life was lost in the fire outbreak.

7yrs old was sweep away by flood

The downpour in Ado Ekiti which led to the death of a primary one pupil, Olamide Ayeni, was swept away by the flood. The rain which started around 8.15pm swept away Olamide who followed his elder sister Faith, who was on an errand before the rain started. An uncle of the deceased, Mr. Simeon Ayeni, who narrated how the incident happened, explained that Faith, aged 15, decided to return home. He added that Olamide, who was walking on the culvert, slipped and fell into the drainage and was swept away.He said the culvert had been covered by flood and there was no way to see where a space had been created. Ayeni said firefighters came and combed the area but their effort  to recover the boy was futile.  Governor Kayode Fayemi has said he will make sure that adequate room is provided for the drains so that water can flow into wider channels, dredge the channels and ensure that water flows properly. Anyone who has built on a waterway or in a place that will not allow water to flow seamlessly should be ready to hear from me. The Police Public Relations Officer of the Command, Mr Victor Babayemi, said his body was recovered at Housing Estate, along Afao Ekiti road in the state capital. Babayemi said the father of the boy, Mr Matthew Ayeni, had identified the corpse and it had been released to him for burial.

Murder: Court admits police pistol as evidence

A Lagos High Court sitting in Igbosere, received a pistol and a 38mm bullet allegedly used by Sgt Olowojoyin Abolade, 43, in killing one Yusuf Omole whom he allegedly shot at close range in the chest. During the proceeding, counsel to the defendant, Mr O. Ajanaku, on observing the exhibits raised no objection as they were marked by the court. In the charge LCD/99/2010, the prosecutor told the court that the offence was contrary to Section 319 (1) of the Criminal Code Law, Cap C 17 Vol 2, and Laws of Lagos State 2003. The sergeant who last served at the Nigeria Police Division, Iponri is facing a one-count-charge of murder, to which he had pleaded not guilty but remanded in Ikoyi prison.

Man, 40, jailed 6 months over fake number plates

Ogun State Magistrate Court sentenced Raifu Olatiloye  40, to six months imprisonment without an option of fine for producing and possessing 20 different fake number plates  which he manufactured illegally the offence the state Internal  Revenue Service, IRS, operatives said contravened  sections 465 and 467 of the State Criminal Code law 2006. Reacting to the judgment, Chairman of the state Internal Revenue Service, Babajide Odubanjo, described it as a welcome development and a plus for his advocacy against forgery and faking of revenue documents and number plates.

a three-man armed gang kidnapped a nonagenarian, Alhaji Musa Adisa, popularly known as Labaika, at a short distance from his residence at Isolo Street, Akure, Ondo State. The former president of the Ondo branch of Master Bakers Association of Nigeria was said to be on his way to early morning prayers at a mosque about 20 metres from his home when the gang, which had parked a red Toyota Camry car beside the mosque, pounced on him. The matter was immediately reported to the Ijapo Police Station, which dispatched a team of detectives to the scene to commence preliminary investigations.  Kidnapper of the 90-year-old former President of the Master Bakers Association of Nigeria, have demanded a N30 million ransom, Son of the victim, Alhaji Musbau Iyiola said. The Ondo Police Command, assured that the old man would be rescued.

EFCC docks man, 30, for allegedly stealing $4,000

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, yesterday, arraigned a 30- year- old man, Benjamin Otuorimo, before an Ikeja High Court, for allegedly stealing $4,000, belonging to Kemud International Company Ltd. He said the defendant had hacked into Kemud  International Company Ltd site and on finding out that Kemud was owing Intech Process Automation Nigeria Company  Ltd  $4,000, he then presented himself as a representative of Intech Process Automation Company, and induced the company to pay the amount into account number 2015862776 belonging to one Audu Mohammed at First Bank Plc, Sabo Yaba area of Lagos. However, Justice Akinlade ordered that the defendant be remanded in Kirikiri Maximum prison pending the filling of his bail application and adjourned the matter to June 10, 2013 for trial.

Man charged for stealing N3.4m petroleum product

Oyediran, 35, is facing a count charge in Magistrate Court Ikeja of stealing petroleum motor spirit, PMS, worth N3.4million, belonging to one Okonkwo Amenike. The prosecutor, Assistant Superintendent of Police, Barth Nwaokoye, told the court that the crime took place at Agege area of Lagos on November 23, 2012, at about 1.30p.m. He said that Oyediran unlawfully received 33,000 liters of petroleum motor spirit valued at N3,399,000,  property of one Okonkwo Amenike. He said the defendant knew the product was stolen but he still received it. The prosecutor said the offence committed was punishable under section 326 (2) criminal law of Lagos state of Nigeria 2011. Magistrate Demi Ajayi granted him bail in the sum of N1million with two sureties in like sum and adjourned.

About 10 persons have been killed while several others are alleged to be missing following an attack by suspected Fulani herdsmen in Guma Local Council of Benue State. The  assailants ambushed Tiv farmers in Mbasenge community of Mbagwen in the early hours of Wednesday and killed the defenceless people and destroyed their houses and other property.The member representing Guma/Makurdi Federal Constituency, Emmanuel Jime, who expressed displeasure over the existing insecurity in the country, noted that a permanent solution to the crisis would soon be found.

Orphanage rape: Police set to prosecute director

Mr. Olatayo Atunde the of Director of Light of Hope Orphanage was arrested and charged at the Ota Magistrate’s Court was accused for rape by two minors aged 13 and 14, living at his orphanage. Project Alert, a non-governmental organisation on violence against women, had petitioned the Zone 2 Command on the issue after some officials of a private secondary school, where the minors are students, reported the case to them. A medical report from the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, had confirmed that the vaginal hymens of the girls were no longer intact. The state government, in a statement last week, had said, “It is only fair that Atunde stay away from the orphanage to prevent interference with investigation or obstruction of justice.” The orphanage, which also doubles as Atunde’s family home, has been in operation since 1996. Now, 22 children live at the orphanage with another 11 away, running programmes at various universities in the country.

Suspected Boko Haram sect member in a clash with the Multinational Task Force (MTF) at baga in brono state. The MTF comprises troops from Nigeria, Cameroun, Niger and Chad. It was set up by the four countries to curb the rise of Islamic insurgency and terrorism in their countries. President Jonathan and Governor Alhaji Kashim Shettima ordered a full-scale investigation into reports of high civilian casualties in the confrontation between the soldiers and insurgents at Baga. Numbers of victims and properties have not been verified.

3 killed, 34 injured in Kaduna-Zaria road auto crash

Three persons have been confirmed dead and 34 others severely injured in a traffic accident on Kaduna-Zaria expressway. The Commander of Federal Road Safety Commission, FRSC Zaria unit, Mr Maigari Boyi-Ali, said the accident occurred at about 4:30a.m between 911 Mercedes lorry with number plate XD603-MSH and a DAF  articulated truck with number plate XH832-ABC. He said the victims had been taken to Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, ABUTH, Shika, for appropriate attention.

Yobe imposes curfew as gunmen attack military, police formations

Gunmen, suspected to be Boko Haram members, attacked a military location and police station in Gashua, the headquarter of Bade Local Government Area. The statement said that the details of the attacks were not readily available because the attacks were carried out in the night. The Yobe Government has imposed restriction of movement order from 6p.m to 7a.m across the state to curb the spate of gun attacks and violence in the state two weeks ago.

Gunmen Kill Three WAEC Officials

Three members of staff of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) who were killed by yet-to-be-identified gunmen at a village in Yobe State while on an official assignment to Maiduguri, the Borno State capital snatching the utility vehicle they were travelling in. The    WAEC’s Head of Entry, Mr. Peter Gwalasha, the police escort, Constable Alexander and the driver, Mr Boniface Emmanuel, were attacked, while on official trip to Maiduguri, the Zonal Office of WAEC for submission before they were attacked and killed.

25 killed, N9m carted away in Gashua terror attack – Police

That five policemen and 20 gunmen had been confirmed dead with over nine million naira carted away from a commercial bank during the attack by Islamic Boko Haram terrorists in Gashua, Yobe state The Commissioner of Police in Yobe, Alhaji Sanusi Rufai said.  He explained that the gunmen had earlier seized the bank manager, forcing him to open the vault where the money was carted away from together with a Peugeot 406 and Toyota Corolla cars. The commissioner said that two guns, two locally made pistols; two long range rifles; 19 hand grenades and assorted ammunitions were also recovered from the gunmen. He said that one of the gunmen was captured and was now assisting the police with information on the attack. It is the same group using police and military uniforms that attacked Tarmuwa, Gulani and Giedam in recent times,” Rufai said.

Building collapse: 5 students feared dead in Taraba

NO fewer than five students reportedly died at Mararaba village, in Donga Local Government Area of Taraba State, as a result of a building collapse where the students writing the ongoing West African Examinations Council (WAEC) at the storey building, which is one of the centres in that locality. Although the storey building, which  was said to belong to a private individual in that area, was converted to a private school. Estimated number of over 100 students writing the examination at that time, about 30 was said to have sustained various degrees of injury.

Boston bomb suspect charged faces death penalty

Two arrested in Canada over Al Qaeda’s plot. The surviving Boston bomb suspect, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev 19yr, was Monday charged with using a weapon of mass destruction and could face the death penalty if convicted, according to United States (U.S.) Department of Justice. He was arraigned in his hospital bed, where he remains in serious condition, Agence France Presse (AFP) reported. Two people have been arrested in connection with an Al Qaeda supported plot to derail a passenger train in Canada, police said Monday. The two suspects – Chiheb Esseghaier, 30, and Raed Jaser, 35 – were allegedly planning to carry out an attack on a Via Rail passenger train in the Toronto area. Charges against them include conspiring to carry out an attack and conspiring in association with a terrorist group to murder individuals. However, an official in the U.S. prosecutor’s office in the city said yesterday that a first hearing in U.S. federal court in the case has been scheduled for May 30. The federal charges “authorise a penalty, upon conviction, of death or imprisonment for life or any term of years,” the statement said “Although our investigation is ongoing, today’s charges bring a successful end to a tragic week for the city of Boston, and for our country,” said Attorney General Eric Holder.

Gunmen Abduct Two Bishops in Syria

Militants in a rebel-held area of northern Syria have abducted two bishops travelling from the Turkish border back to the city of Aleppo. Yohanna Ibrahim is head of the Syriac Orthodox Church in Aleppo and Boulos Yaziji leads the Greek Orthodox Church in the city.

British Couple Jailed for Attempting to Smuggle Nigerian Baby into UK

British Couple Gladys 52 and Simon 47, Heap from Oxford – have been convicted by a UK court for attempting to pass off a Nigerian baby as their biological child in a bid to smuggle it into the UK. The couple was sentenced to 12 months in prison, suspended for 12 months, and 250 hours of community service after pleading guilty on April 16, 2013. The head of the Border Force at Heathrow, Mr. Marc Owen, described the case as shocking.  “Thanks to the close co-operation between Border Force, the Metropolitan Police and staff at the British High Commission they were stopped and we were able to bring them to justice,” he said. The leader of the investigation team, Detective Inspector Kate Bridger, said the couple tried to circumvent the adoption system and deceive the authorities.

Bangladesh Dhaka Building Collapse Leaves 70 Dead

At least 70 people have been killed and hundreds are feared trapped after an eight-storey building collapsed in the Bangladeshi capital, Dhaka, emergency services say. Frantic efforts are under way to rescue those beneath the debris. At least 200 were injured by the collapse. The army is helping with the rescue operation on the outskirts of Dhaka. Deputy chief of Dhaka police, A.B.M Masud Hossain, told AFP that at least 113 people have died in the disaster,“But the toll will be higher because some relatives took bodies without informing police,” he said.

Explosion at French Embassy in Libya

A car bomb has exploded outside the French embassy in the Libyan capital Tripoli, wounding two French guards and causing major damage. The blast completely destroyed the embassy's reception area and parts of neighbouring homes were badly damaged and others affected, the windows of a shop were blown out and two parked cars were burnt out.

Many Dead' in Russia Hospital Fire

At least 38 people are feared dead after a fire swept through a psychiatric hospital in the Moscow region. The blaze started shortly after 02:00 local time (10:00 GMT Thursday) at the No 14 hospital in Ramenskiy village. The fire broke out in part of the building where patients with severe conditions were being held. A nurse managed to lead to safety two patients. It is believed that 41 people were in the hospital when the fire began.
