A similar drill on Yeonpyeong in 2010 provoked a North Korean artillery barrage that killed four people and sparked international alarm. The exercise came after the marines’ strengthened guard around a giant display featuring thousands of glittering bulbs on a tree-shaped steel tower in Gimpo west of Seoul. The lights, which will remain switched on until early January, can be seen several kilometres away in the impoverished North. The North has condemned the display as "psychological warfare".

Protesters Attack French Embassy in CAR

Hundreds of people protested outside the French Embassy in Central African Republic on Wednesday, throwing stones at the building and tearing down the French flag in anger at a rebel advance in the north of the country. Some protestors accused France of backing the rebels while others demanded French forces in the country help the army fight off the rebel push. A smaller group of protestors gathered outside the US Embassy, while cars carrying white passengers were stoned, reports say. Rebels have in recent weeks taken a string of towns in the country's north. On Tuesday the rebels, known as the Seleka alliance, took the central town of Kaga Bandoro despite the presence there of troops from neighbouring nations meant to shore up the weak national army. CAR President, Francois Bozize, has appealed for assistance from France and US to halt rebels’ advancement. But the United Nations (UN) is pulling out its staff and the U.S. has warned its citizens to leave the country, while France vowed it would not intervene in the country.

Morsi Signs Contentious Constitution into Law

Egyptian President, Mohamed Morsi, has signed into law a new Islamist-drafted constitution he says will help end political turmoil and allow him to focus on fixing the fragile economy. Results announced on Tuesday showed Egyptians had approved the text with 63.8%, paving the way for a parliamentary election in about two months. Opposition groups condemn the new basic law as too Islamist and undemocratic, saying it could allow clerics to intervene in the law making process and leave minority groups without proper legal protection. But Morsi believes adopting the text is important to ending a protracted period of turmoil. A key opposition group in Egypt, National Salvation Front, has called for an investigation into allegations of vote fraud in the referendum on a deeply divisive Islamist-backed constitution after the Muslim Brotherhood, the main group backing the charter, claimed it passed with a 64 per cent “yes” vote.

Eyewitnesses said that the plane fell from a height of 800m (2,600ft), causing a loud explosion. The plane went down 12 miles (20km) from Shymkent airport in very bad weather. Seven crew and 20 military personnel were on board the military transport plane, Kazakhstan's Committee for National Security said in a statement.

Four Mexican Police Officers Ambushed, Killed

Gunmen ambushed and killed four policemen and injured another five in central Mexico, officials said. They said the policemen were responding to reports of a traffic accident in a rural area of Michoacan state when the attackers opened fire on them between the cities of Brisenas and Sahuayo. No group has so far claimed responsibility for the attack in the state, which has been plagued by drug-related violence. Some 60,000 people have died across Mexico since 2006 when the government deployed the military against the drugs gangs.
