Bombs planted by rebels exploded at a school building occupied by security forces and pro-government militias in Damascus, the Syrian capital, on Tuesday. Seven improvised devices were set off in two explosions to target a school used for weekly planning meetings between shabbiha militia and security officers," said Abu Moaz, a leader of Ansar al-Islam, one of the rebel groups in the 18-month-old revolt against President Bashar al-Assad. The rebels also claimed to have launched a “decisive attack” on the city of Aleppo as the UN refugee agency warned that about 700,000 refugees could flee the country by year’s end. Faced with the soaring need for aid, humanitarian agencies have increased their call for funds to $487.9 million to sustain operations until the end of the year.

Japan Protests as China Enter Disputed Waters

About four Chinese ships briefly entered what Japan considers its territorial waters near the disputed islands in the East China Sea on Monday, prompting an official protest from Japan and renewed diplomatic efforts to cool tensions between the rivals. China said that two civilian surveillance ships were undertaking a “rights of defence” patrol near the islands. But by afternoon, all four Chinese vessels had moved further away. In a move that could further complicate the territorial row, a group of fishermen from Taiwan, which also claims the rocky isles, said as many as 100 boats escorted by 10 Taiwan Coast Guard vessels were headed for the area. Sino-Japanese relations deteriorated sharply after Japan bought the islands, earlier this month, sparking anti-Japan protests across China

Iran Will Defend against Israeli Attack

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has said that Iran does not take seriously Israeli threats of attack, but is prepared to defend itself. Ahmadinejad also went further, saying that Israel has “no roots” in the history of the Middle-East and would be “eliminated.” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has hinted Israel could strike Iran’s nuclear sites. Iran denies that it is seeking nuclear arms and says its atomic work is peaceful, aimed at generating electricity.

US Court Denies Bail for 'Anti-Islam Film' Producer

A man linked to an anti-Islam video that sparked riots across the Muslim world has been held without bond after a hearing in California. A judge said Nakoula Basseley Nakoula, 55, was a flight risk and cited a pattern of deception. Nakoula was investigated for violating probation terms after he was released from prison in 2011 for bank fraud. He has not been detained over the contents of the inflammatory video. Nakoula was banned from accessing the internet or using an alias without an officer's permission under the terms of his probation. US authorities had requested Google, the company that owns YouTube, to remove the clip. The technology firm refused, saying the film did not violate its rules.

Mali’s PM Calls for Global Force to Battle Insurgents

Prime Minister of Mali, Cheick Modibo Diarra, has urged the United Nations (UN) Security Council to agree to the formation of an international military force to help oust Islamist rebels in its north. French President, Francois Hollande, supported the call, asking the UN Security Council to meet urgently to approve the call for an African-led force to help flush out armed Islamist rebels. Chaos erupted in Mali in March when the military seized power in the capital, ousting President Amadou Toumani Toure, only to see the north and east fall to Tuareg rebels and Islamist militias linked to Al-Qaeda.

Sudan, S’Sudan Sign Deals to Resume Oil Exports, Boost Trade

Sudan and South Sudan, Thursday, signed deals to secure their shared border and boost trade, including a restart of crucial oil exports. But the two countries reportedly failed to resolve other outstanding conflicts trailing the secession of South Sudan from Sudan last year. The deal will throw both ailing economies a lifeline and prevent, for now, a resumption of the fighting that broke out along the border in April. The Sudanese President, Omar Hassan al-Bashir and his South Sudanese counterpart, President Salva Kiir, signed the cooperation and trade deals in a deal brokered by former South African President and African Union (AU) mediator, Thabo Mbeki. The defence ministers of Sudan and south Sudan also signed a deal to set up a demilitarised buffer zone along the joint border.
